TRANSCRIPT
Appendix G: Spontaneous ignitiontemperature data
The greatest compilations of spontaneous ignition (autoignition) temperature arethose of Mullins [AGARDOgraph No. 4 (1955)] and Zabetakis [US Bur, MinesBulletin 627 (1965)]. These data have been collated and are given with permissionin this appendix. The largest compilation is that of Mullins, and consequently hisgeneral format of presenting the data is followed. There have been many methodsof measuring ignition temperatures, and the results from different measurementshave not necessarily been self-consistent. Mullins lists the various results, a refer-ence to the technique used, and the reporting investigators. Since various techniqueshave not been discussed in the text, these references have been omitted from the datawhich are reproduced here, and only the reported ignition temperatures arepresented.
All temperatures are reported in degrees centigrade. The delay period, whereknown, is in milliseconds and follows the temperature in parentheses. If no delaytime appears, then the spontaneous ignition time was either not specifiable, not spec-ified or determined by the manner shown in Figure 1 of Chapter 7, and probably al-ways in excess of 1000 ms. All data are for atmospheric pressure with the exceptionof the vitiated air data for acetylene and hydrogen, which are for 0.9 atm. When therewas a significant difference between the values reported by Mullins and Zabetakis, the values given by Zabetakis were added to the reorganized Mullins compilation. This value is designated by the letter z following the temperature. When the originalMullins listing reported two or more values within 2 degrees of each other, then onlyone value has been presented. If there are large differences between the reportedvalues, the reader is urged to refer to Mullins and Zabetakis for the method and orig-inal source. Additional data are available in the Ignition Handbook by Babrauskas(Fire Science Publishers, Issaquah, WA 2003) and from Kuchta [US Bur. MinesBulletin 680 (1985)].
