What is a combustion reaction?

A combustion reaction is when the sequence of exothermic chemical reactions between a fuel source which will create heat.

What is a fire triangle?

A fire triangle is showing how to create a fire and how one is started.

Page 5: Combustion Reactions Power Point

What is activation energy?

The activation energy is basically the activation switch to a chemical reaction.

Why is heat/energy a necessary part of the fire triangle?

The triangle illustrates a fire requires three elements heat, fuel, oxygen to make a fire which need to be part of the triangle because that is what it needs.

How is the cooktop of your stove (not electric) a real-life example of a fire triangle?

When the gas comes out it connect to the energy which will then start the fire to cook your food.

What is a combustion engine?

A combustion engine combines air and fuel to make an energy to make the car move.

Page 9: Combustion Reactions Power Point

How does a combustion engine work

It work by a fuel going to the engine then the air and the fuel make a small explosion to get the car move from one spot to the other.

how are NASCAR engines different from street car engines that

allow them to operate at much higher speeds?

They are based on a 340 cubic inch V-8 engine design and the actual engine blocks and heads are not made from the original tooling, they are custom made race engine blocks, but they do have some things in common with the original engines.

How does nitrous oxide help engines perform better?

nitrous oxide works exactly the same way. When you heat nitrous oxide to about 570 degrees F , it splits into oxygen and nitrogen which makes it go faster and perform better on the race tracks.

Provide 1 documented example of cheating in NASCAR in which something

was done illegally to increase the combustion performance of the engine

In this country during 1950s the famed stock car racer Smokey Yunick put nitrous oxide injection as one of his many schemes for winning races until discovered and outlawed by NASCAR
