welcome Our objectives and ideas have stemmed from the notion that a University campus

is a maze, but also, it is a metaphor for your journey through university, emotion-ally, personally, and academically. There are so many different paths to choose, so many ups and downs, and countless obstacles which you have to overcome, however, anything is possible when you have a little support and guidance. That’s where MAZE comes in. Whilst university may seem daunting, it is also aMAZEing. It is a fulfilling journey in which we believe you discover your skills, your expertise, and most importantly your personality, giving you a chance to develop into your real self. So the name of our magazine encompasses all aspects of what we believe university life to be, an aMAZEing journey, filled with challenges and choices, but we as a magazine are there to guide you through it. We believe that the very first day of Uni-versity is effectively the beginning of this journey, however, we feel as though mak-ing the correct decisions before this day

is immensely important. That’s why we aim to give you all of the relevant infor-mation you need when deciding whether or not to join us here at MCH Newcastle. As you progress in your academic studies and also in your personal life, hobbies and social life, you choose different paths and routes, which may bring you to different obstacles and outcomes, and MAZE will continue to be there for support in these times. These tests are all part of how Newcastle University will prepare you for the real world. As well as putting this message across to you, our readers, our magazine wants to offer you refreshing and up to date, aMAZEing content, that grabs your at-tention. With this magazine as your guide and your compass, you will feel at ease when commencing on your journey, there is no space to worry or be confused, as your campus compass is here to guide you through your university life, to en-sure you graduate, having had the most incredible and aMAZEing learning expe-rience of your life, and are ready to enter the next stage of your adventure as an adult.

The original Media, Communication and Culture course at Newcastle University offers an academically rigorous program that steps away from the overly practical course that most universities offer. The course has three main focuses:Media: A look at the mass media, the press, technology and other aspects of the media sphere. Communications: How to impart thoughts and feelings, public relations and professional communication. Culture: In depth theory relating to the ideas and customs of various societies.

This creates a great mix of theoretical knowledge which can be applied to a variety of topics. You will also be given the opportunity to explore your more practical interests with modules in magazine publishing, journalism and advertising. This course often tops various league tables, and with world renowned teaching and a 96% student satisfaction rating, you won’t find anywhere better!

MEDIA, COMMUNICATIONS AND CULTURAL STUDIES (PQL0)

JOURNALISM,MEDIA

AND CULTURE(P500)

The new journalism course combines the

media and cultural theory of the PQL0 course with a more in depth focus on

journalism. Through the course of your program,

you will be taught how to write for different

platforms, how to deal with the rise of digital

media as well as training in audio and visual media. This course is perfect for

anyone wishing to pursue a career in journalism as it will really prepare you for

life in the news room.

FILM AND MEDIA (P303)

Focused more on using digital technologies, this course combines both practical and theoretical methods towards non-fiction film-making. Alongside creative skills with producing films, students will study film theory and academics to broaden their

range in preparation for a future in the media industry. Film screenings, journalistic writing, technology and film online communications will offer students a mix of modules throughout the course, and with

state of the art film-making equipment available and student lead film and television societies within the university, it’s a perfect choice for any potential future film-makers!

Prospective students should apply to study media in Newcastle because our graduating students are so happy with their time with us. We have placed in the top decile of BA media studies

programmes for student satisfaction each year for the last three years, with more than 90% of our senior students saying they

were satisfied with their course. If the classes weren’t interesting, if the marks weren’t fair, if the feedback wasn’t good, we wouldn’t

get such a positive response in an anonymous survey from our current students. For prospective students trying to choose a

course, those are very good odds! The media industry is the crucial force in the modern time with versatile impacts on all aspects of life from the political systems we live by to economy and leisure.

Media Studies at Newcastle University brings together theoretical and practical sides of teaching and combines it with state of the art research in the field.

Dr. Catherine Walsh

Dr. Majid Khosravinik

Dr. Joss Hands

This course offers the chance to explore so many current issues and gives you a chance to draw in on so many different

areas and to really have a kind of open and evolving disci-pline. Which gives you a lot of scope, reading varied areas and studying all sorts of texts beyond theory such as films, tv and

internet. Its an exciting discipline. Newcastle is a really good place, I’ve been really impressed so far. The people here are

really great, lovely city, so all in all, it’s very fantastic and I’m very happy to be here.

“ ”

”The department of Media, Culture and Heritage at Newcastle University is an outstanding place to study all aspects of media, communication and cultural studies. The department is regularly rated within the top five according to prestigious rankings including the Times Higher Education Guide and The Guardian. Students graduating from our programmes are extremely happy with their experience and overall satisfaction regularly tops 95%. Students within the department are taught by a range of world leading experts in theory and practice and this is reflected by the departments recent success in the Research Excellence Framework 2015, where it was ranked 12th within the country for media, communication and cultural studies.

‘The thing that stood out the most for me on our course is the range of modules we get to choose from.’

Zacky Bensouda, 3rd year

Emma Brown Media, Comms and Culture 3rd year For me, I love discussions in semi-nars where everyone brings some-thing new and the lecturers present us with ideas that we have never consid-ered before. It’s absolutely fascinating to learn such new and relevant things that really do change how we look at what’s going on around us. Student life at Newcastle University is perfect: the nightlife is exciting and vibrant with student nights on every week-night and everything is within walking

distance.

3

Louise Shaw Media, Comms and Culture 2nd year The city, the nightlife, the incredible course, the lecturers - all are amazing. My course offers both practical modules, such as Online Communication where you can design a website of your own; and theory based modules. As a lover of media theories, I loved the more intellectually stimulating theoretical modules , like Introduction to Media Studies 1 and

Advertising & Consumption.

Greta Magistrelli Media, Comms and Culture 3rd year I love our course, it gives the opportunity to approach both theoretical and practical subjects around Media and Communication. It is also one of the most International courses at Newcastle University, which means that you engage with students from all around the world, who differ for cultures and backgrounds and further enrich your knowledge and

personal development.

Sam Midwood Film and Media 1st year I enjoy the practical side of my course. It is particularly important to film students to be able to use the equipment and get better in the field rather than just learn the theory. It is very interactive and I have already became very good friends with a lot of people on my

course.

Ashleigh Goodchild Media, Comms and Cultue 3rd year Studying media and communications at Newcastle University has allowed me to learn about a broad spectrum of the media industry, its history and cultural aspects. The course is always interesting and there’s loads of variety

of modules to chose from.

ZeynepYiyener Media, Comms and Culture 3rd year Media, Communication and Cultural Studies opened a new door in my life. I learned how to analyze what is happen-ing around the world and to discuss these incidents from different aspects. I also had a chance to meet lots of people from different countries and cultures. Now I have a home in every country thanks to

this course.

surrounded by an assortment of media textbooks, newspapers and quirky pop art, Darren Kelsey’s office is a perfect mirror to his down to earth teaching and dedication to media. Sat amongst the books; Darren recalls as to how his dedication and love for media has brought him from studying Journalism and Film at Cardiff University, to Deputy Head of Media, Culture and Heritage here in Newcastle.

MYTHOLOGIST

“I am fascinated by media.”

“As the old saying goes, the media cannot tell us what to think but it can certainly tell us what to think about. Therefore, media studies have a huge responsibility and role to play in monitoring, analyzing, critiquing and scrutinizing the role of media in our lives. I really believe that a critical, media savvy society is crucial in a democracy. I could talk all day about this!” The passion radiates throughout the office. Not only does Darren teach at the university, but he’s written a book on media, mythology and terrorism, has had his research published over 15 times in various academic fields, and “[he is] the editor of an interdisciplinary academic journal that I launched last year called Journalism and Discourse Studies”.

“The sTudenTs inspired me.

i hope i inspired Them.”

“Not only do I enjoy sharing my research with students but I like to involve them in the development of ideas in order to see what they think about particular issues and theories that I am grappling with through my own work.” From this module in particular, he explains how the last year of teaching has been so productive and insightful that he will be thanking and including them in his next book, Affective Mythologies: The transpersonal politics of storytelling and ideology. For a module just created it’s amazing that it’s become so popular, and another reason why Newcastle University stands out for it’s media course consistently every year.

Not just all work and no play, Darren still loves spending quality time with his wife and daughter, and of course, like any guy, having a pint with his mates down the pub. Even when asked about his hobbies and interests Darren still recommends one of his favorite show’s, “Deutshcland 83” to students who study mythology at Newcastle, reflecting his passion and want to help and engage. After creating a new module, Mythology, from scratch, it was obviously important to Darren to pass over his passion and skills to the students. Not only does it offer analytical academic contexts and knowledge, but creates the space and ideology for students to look deeper into society around them and take away these skills and engagement to the “real world”.

The

the manthelecturer

DARREN KELSEYMYTHOLOGIST

The course at Newcastle is created for its students to make the most out of everything they choose to do. After the merging of the course to Media, Culture and Heritage in 2015, it’s now even more creative and varied, and Darren believes this is what makes Newcastle stand out from other universities and courses. He admits and states he doesn’t like categories, even from all the different academic philosophers and concepts taught, and he’s still researching and confidently creating his own ideas. “If you want to call me anything, call me a mythologist!” But aside from Mythology, Darren explains how he loves the Politics and Communication module, as it’s not what “students expect it to be”. Wanting to move away from the preconceptions and feelings towards politics, Darren favors the module for engaging and helping students and creating a personal bond, something Newcastle is famous for in its Media course.“We care about our students. We get

to know our students and we are all one big team who work together.” Even with his other research and publications, a family and future in journalism, Darren is always positive and a great innovator for Media, Culture and Heritage at Newcastle University. With his constant smile still on his face, he believes the combination of theory and practice, consideration of skills and issues and “internationally respected researchers as well as highly experienced and respected practitioners” are what sets Newcastle University apart from other courses and universities. He confidently and passionately believes in what he’s saying and teaching, and it’s evident in the results too.

“This is why it is a great place to study and work. This is why we consistently finish at the top of various national league tables”the man

thelecturer

“[Students] developed theirown ideas and they have been tremendous. [I] have been genuinely excited by every lecture and seminar because every week has been a shared experience where 60 minds come

together for analysis, discussion, debate and thought in a way that is truly inspiring. I have been blown away by the engagement of the

students this semester.”

This Morning was possibly my greatest achievement. Women were often overlooked in the TV market at that time and I wanted to create something for them to enjoy. I didn’t know it’d take off quite as much as it did!” She also made the courageous decision to base the show in Liverpool, filming live every morning. “It was really important to me to base the show in the north. I feel like the whole media industry is way too focused on London.”

As well as This Morning, in her role as ITV Productions Director of Daytime and Lifestyle Programming, she created Stars in Their Eyes, You’ve Been Framed and Loose Women as well as kick starting the careers of Richard and Judy and Jeremy Kyle. It’s definitely not an overstate to say that Dianne Nelmes has completely recreated the landscape of daytime television.

Despite growing up in the South, ever since her university days Dianne has seen the North East as her second home, staying committed to the area, in both her work and personal lives. “I love the Great North Run,” she says, “I try and do it every year. What better way to take in Newcastle’s beauty”. In 2008 she left ITV to became the production director for Liberty Bell Productions, a company

Sitting in the Robinson Library, emailing Dianne Nelmes, ITV’s Queen of Daytime TV; it’s odd to think that she could have once sat in this very seat. The creator of This Morning studied Politics and Economics at Newcastle in 1970 before deciding that media was the field for her.

Upon leaving university, Dianne became the President of the Student’s Union, claiming that she “wanted to make a difference to the student body”. She was a popular president filled with passion and dedication, so it

came as a shock to many when she opted for a career in media over politics.

based between London and Newcastle. Through this, she has shown great commitment towards the improvement and promotion of media production in the North East.

Her links to Newcastle University and MCH remain strong with her just completing a term as a Visiting Professor in Media and Journalism, something she described as “a really rewarding experience” adding that she was “disappointed that such an interesting media degree program wasn’t on offer when she was studying”. Despite this, Dianne was an active part of Newcastle student media, saying that it was The Courier that originally sparked her passion for journalism. “I really enjoyed getting involved and reporting on social issues in the area. It made me feel like I could make some sort of difference.”

She also regularly comes back to give talks to students, for example, last year she participated in the Inspirational Women’s Conference where she told her story to students and offered advice on how to break into the media industry. The students of MCH at Newcastle really couldn’t ask for a better mentor and Dianne Nelmes really is an inspiration to anyone looking to break into the media industry.

“My first job was a G r a d u a t e

T r a i n e e J o u r n a l i s t with the H e m e l

H e m p s t e a d Evening Echo” she told me. “I had applied

for all of the journalism jobs I could and this was maybe the only one that came back

to me.” She noted that locking down that all-important

first graduate job usually boils down to perseverance. “A lot of people in this industry

have connections so it can be hard if you don’t, You just have to show people you have what it takes and

never give up. I was the first person in my family to go to university for a long time. I had no one to help me but if you believe in yourself then you can achieve anything.”

Dianne was later drawn back to Newcastle to work for the Journal but ultimately left print journalism in favour of the world of television. This is where she really made her mark on the country, changing the fact of daytime TV forever. “I think creating

Cast lesNewcastle literally wouldn’t be New-castle without its fair share of castles. Newcastle Castle in the centre of town is the city’s namesake. Built by the late Henry II, the castle was restored, refurbished and recently reopened to visitors on March 2015. Visitors can also go all the way to the top for a picturesque panorama of the city, explore various rooms filled with artifacts and audio-visual installations, or attend one of the many events they host each year.

If you’re willing to go a little further afield then hop on a bus down to Alnwick Castle and Gardens. The castle is well known as a commercial attraction as it’s a filming location for popular film series Harry Potter and the award winning drama, Downton Abbey. Alnwick hosts regular activities throughout the day for all ages such as Harry Potter broomstick lessons and medieval fancy dress and the adjoining garden even has a treehouse restaurant, making this the perfect place to visit if you want a bit of fun.

MuseumsThe Great North Museum: Hancock is situated on Newcastle University’s campus so is the perfect place for students to get their fill of history. Entry is free and it features various rotating scientific and historical exhibits as well as regularly hosting schools and group tours. There’s even a planetarium for any budding astronomists!

While you’re working, make sure you take a look around and keep your eyes peeled for their amazing events.

LIFE Centre is the scientific hub of Newcastle. It’s jam packed full of hands on exhibits for those who like to get involved. With a 4D cinema and an exhibition hall that brings in some of the world’s most renowned work, it can be a little pricey, but definitely worth a look.

Cultural Places

EntertainmentThe North-East region is not shy of entertaining with its fair share of large music venues, including some of the best stages both intimate and those more extravagant, all lying in the heart of Newcastle. Whether you’re a fan of comedy, theatre, live Jazz and Soul or the biggest DJs you can find it here.

Mens Bar & Venue is located in the Student’s Union and offers a great space for intimate gigs from James Bay, Sunset of Suns and Example to mention a few. Metro Radio Arena is a venue as large as its stage, host to the biggest stars that have graced the arena time and time again.

For smaller acts, but with an equally as good voice check out O2 Academy that has overtaken and refurbished an old bingo hall that creates a venue booming with great acoustics!

TOP TIP: Need a UK phone company? Choose O2 for priority access to gigs, queue jump, VIP and a free cloakroom at their Newcastle O2

academy!

Newcastle plays host to many comedy acts with many of the biggest names, such as Jack Whitehall, Jason Manford and Sarah Milligan all

taking a trip to the toon. The Hyena Club is the city’s main venue situated just off Leazes Lane, and doubles up as a bar - perfect for those comedy lovers and party goers right by the most popular halls of residence! With the biggest acts on at a weekend, try the last Thursday of every month for cheaper tickets and the freshest faces of stand up.

Another popular comical venue is The Stand, so for a long laughter-fest aimed at true fans of comedy, head here for some original and new material on a Wednesday for only £2. But no surprises here, get down early for the cheap laughs, it gets busy!

Newcastle plays host to fantastic venues for musical and theatre productions, situated on the north and south of the River Tyne. The Sage is beautifully located on the quayside for a picturesque view on and off the stage, and make sure you

visit the Theatre Royal around Christmas for a rendition of a classic pantomime and contemporary dance performances.

For the theatre on your door stop, you can’t miss NORTHERN STAGE as it’s situated on campus across from the Student’s Union and it’s the largest producing company here in the North East and in the Top 11 touring productions in the UK!

BEST BARS in TOWN

It might be famous for its nightlife and cheap drinks, but look closer and Newcastle has a lot more to offer students on its social scene.

TreblesNewcastle is famous for them. One of the only cities in the UK to legally serve these, trebles bars are a right of passage for students.Try Sinners and Sam Jacks for your cheesy sports bars, Mimo’s for cocktails and class and Gotham for indie classics.

Student BarsOsborne Road in Jesmond is consistently packed with students. Loaded with different bars down the road, happy hours to ‘push the button’ deals; heated outside seating and plenty of space to be sociable with your friends.Check out Bar Blanc on a Tuesday, and Osbornes Happy Hours every week night.

Bars and PubsThe Fourth and Town Wall are sat adjacent to each other, minutes from Central Station but both as chilled and cozy as the others. Stylish yet simple, they’re a great place to meet friends and The Fourth even has a terrace for those summer days.Nancy’s Bordello is another with a terrace for looking out over your city whilst enjoying a drink at the same bargain student prices as Mr Lynches in Jesmond. With the same offers and chilled out scene, it’s a student favourite.

CocktailsBeing a student doesn’t mean you are confined to trebles, and lots of smaller bars offer deals throughout the week. In Jesmond Sohe, an oriental fusion bar and restaurant offers 2 for 1 cocktails at selected times in the week. Definitely one to try and not one to miss!

In town itself, Lola Jeans is a small bar and restaurant located on Market Street, that specializes in oriental cocktails, hidden away from the bustling crowds. Gorgeous cocktails in gorgeous surroundings.

Alvinos bar is again a hidden gem aligned with retro style booths over 3 floors and a private terrace that’s great for a quiet week night or transforms into night out at the weekend. During the week enjoy 2 for £8.95 on all cocktails, making it a top choice for amazing yet affordable cocktails.

Jalou is also popular with students every Thursday with 50% off all cocktails, famous for its sweet spins on classic cocktails.

Finally, known especially for its vast array of gins, Pleased to Meet You is another great place for cocktails.

NORTHUMBERLANDSTREET To

get to Eldon Square shopping centre from uni

campus, you get the added pleasure of walking through

Northumberland Street. Northumberland Street contains even more successful

high street shops such as Superdrug, H&M, WHSmiths, and most importantly Fenwicks. The prestigious department store, situated

adjacent to Eldon Square first opened in 1882, and has been one of Britain’s leading retailers ever since. With this

easy access to both Eldon Square and Fenwicks, there is nothing

unavailable for students at Newcastle Uni.

ELDONSQUARE

Newcastle is renowned for its fun and lively nightlife, with the city centre filled with nightclub venues ranging in all different shapes and sizes, however what you may not know is that Newcastle city centre is not just capable of delivering an entertaining night out, it is also very qualified in the fashion field. There are two diverse

shopping centres, Eldon Square, and the famous Metro Centre. Eldon square is situated within a 5 minute walk from the uni campus, making it ideal for students to nip into town to get a new outfit to hit the clubs in that night or to browse through the shops during your revision break from the library.

Eldon Square is not only convenient due to its proximity to campus but equally if you fancy a night off the town. Eldon Square offers an exclusive night time shopping experience for students regularly throughout the year. Not only this, but because of its recognition of students being a large percentage of the shop’s customers, many of the shops offer a fantastic student discount of up to 30%

and more.

Not only are the offers for students enticing, the leisure

side of Eldon Square is just as impressive. If all the shopping makes

you a little peckish, you are welcomed to dine at some of the country’s top restaurant chains; such as Nandos, Wagamamas and Pizza Express, or if you just fancy an on-the-go snack; Costa, Starbucks, Millies Cookies and many more are there at your service. Again some of these restaurants withhold an unbelievable offer for students, such as Pizza Express giving 40% off for students at

certain times.

Whether you’re a fan or not, it’s hard to escape the impact that sport has on Newcastle University and the city as a whole. From football to basketball, BUCS to Premier League, there are countless opportunities to get involved in the sporting

community, both on and off the pitch.

Football:Newcastle United

St James’ Park, home of Newcastle’s Premier League football team, is an iconic

part of the city’s skyline. The fans are extremely passionate and on game days the city centre is flooded with black and white stripes. Football is a way of life here and you can get involved by attending a game, taking a stadium tour, or just going to the

pub to watch a match. There really is nothing else quite like St James’ on

game day and it’s a must for all students, at least once.

LET’S GETPHYSICAL

Get Involved with University Sport

AU and BUCSThe Newcastle University Athletic Union offers

62 wide ranging sports for all interests and abilities with most of these clubs competing in the BUCS

league on Wednesday afternoons. BUCS, the British Universities and Colleges Sport, is a nationwide

league that allows universities to compete against each other in a variety of sports. The scores for each

sport are then combined to create a leaderboard of the best sporting universities in the country. Newcastle consistently places within the top

10 and prides itself on being the highest placed university without a sport

degree program.

Basketball: Newcastle Eagles

If you’re looking for something a little different (and cheaper) then get stuck in to the British Basketball League and support the Newcastle Eagles. They’ve been crowned champions of the BBL for the last few years and the games are fast paced, high scoring and very exciting. Whether you’re a huge basketball fan or have never seen a game in your life, head down to Sport Central

to experience an interactive and exhilarating game. There’s even

cheerleaders!

Rugby: Newcastle Falcons

If you’re more of a rugby person then head to a Falcons game at Kingston Park

and watch them take on the country’s best in the Aviva Premiership. Newcastle has also recently played host to the Rugby World Cup and is frequently visited by

the England U21s and other national teams so there’s always something

for rugby fans to satisfy their cravings.

Tips to

survive

uniJust the same as anything, everyone

needs a little help when it comes to a new chapter in your life. From student to

student, here are our top tips for university.

It’s always best to think ahead so have a look at our checklist and make sure you have

everything before you leave. Check out where your halls are and how to get around; it makes

everything much less daunting.

As soon as your first loan comes in you’ll feel like a millionaire, but it’s really not as much as you think. Everything adds up so make sure you at least have a rough budget right from the start.

When you get to halls, making friends seems daunting. Remember everyone is in the same position and will

want to make friends. Invite your flat and neighbours out, speak to those next to you in lectures. University

is the place to let go and try new things.
