    CUCSD MISSION

    Columbia University Coalition forSustainable Development (CUCSD) wascreated to provide Columbia Universitystudents with the opportunity to engagein high-level sustainable developmentrelated meetings such as the upcomingUN Conference on SustainableDevelopment (Rio+20), in Rio de Janeiro.

    CUCSD serves as a platform forstudents to collaborate amongstthemselves to make use of theseopportunities.

    By attending these internationalforums, our members representCUCSD in multilateral negotiations,share their work with field experts insustainable development, mobilizetheir peers in impacting internationalpolicies, and apply their experience intheir academic and professional work.

    In addition, students are able to helpdisseminating information andinnovations in SustainableDevelopment at Columbia University.

    Jairo Garcia(CUCSD Co-Founder Advisor Executive Board)

    Jairo is pursuing a Masters of Science degree inSustainability Management at Columbia

    University. He is the VP of Academic Affairs ofthe Student Association, Intern and TeachingAssistant at the Earth Institute, and Co-Founderand Member of the Executive Board ofGlobalEdTech, an NGO specializing in theresearch and development of ICTs for institutionsimplementing on-line educational programs topromote sustainable development.

    Jairos Doctoral Dissertation was focused oneducation for sustainable development atuniversities in Costa Rica. He graduated with PhiDelta Kappa International Honors. He haspublished a half dozen peer-reviewed papers inthe area of educat ion for sustainabledevelopment and has presented at many

    international conferences such as AASHE,IESALC-UNESCO, LACCEI, HICE, and ISDRC.Jairo has actively participated with theInternational Environmental GovernanceStakeholders at UNEP, providing input for thecreation of the institutional framework forsustainable development in preparation for theUN Conference Rio+20.

    Approaches in Graduate Education forSustainable Development: Modalities ofField Training in the Masters inDevelopment Practice Programs will bepublished as a chapter in the book S u s t a i n a b l e D e v e l o p m e n t a tUniversities: New Horizons.

    Jairo has been invited to present thispaper at the World Symposium onSustainable Development at Universities,

    a parallel to the UN Rio+20 conference.Jairo also serves as the liaison betweenthe Earth Charter International andColumbia University.

    Esperanza was a consultant for theMillenium Development Goal AwardsCommittee, honoring the efforts of

    governments & civil society in theircontribution towards the achievement of theUNMDGs. She was a journalist for UNICEF &South-South and served as a negotiator &official delegate for the Philippines at the UNClimate Change Conference in COP15 '09 &COP16 '10. Esperanza has received awardson youth leadership and is invited to speak

    at international conferences, including UN,on the importance of young peoplesengagement in g loba l a f fa i r s andenvironmental sustainability. Her work hasbeen published in several books andmagazines including Unipro's "30 topFilipinos under 30" and Swedish magazine

    "Heroes of Today."

    Esperanza is pursuing a Masters of Science

    degree in Sustainability Management atColumbia University. She is Co-Founder &Member of Executive Board of the InternationalYouth Council which has provided educationalresources & leadership opportunities to youngglobal leaders. She blogs at Ecohope. She wasborn & raised in Cebu, Philippines and is a

    single mother of a 6 year old.She has studied renewable energy at YaleUniversity summer school and worked as aconsultant for South-South News, which workswith UN agencies in helping South-Southcountries develop programs. She founded thePhilippine Youth Climate Movement awardingclimate heroes & raising climate change

    awareness in Philippine schools. She served asa consultant for the Philippine Senate ClimateChange Committee.She worked as consultant for FriendshipAmbassadors Foundation, where she focusedher efforts in organizing the Youth Assembly atthe United Nations attended by hundreds of

    young global leaders.

    Ben Rattenbury(CUCSD Co-Founder Vice-President)

    Ben is a UK Fulbright Scholar at SIPA focusing on environmental and economicpolicy, specifically in relation to climate change.Prior to SIPA Ben worked to develop civil society across Europe, particularly informer communist countries, with the support of the EU, the UN and British ForeignOffice. During this period he was a special adviser to the European Commission, DGEnlargement, on their civil society promotion strategies, while in his spare time hewas Executive Director of Tenteleni, a grass-roots NGO sending 100volunteers to participate in education projects across sub-Saharan Africa annually.
