On January 27, 2016, the New York Mets announced Jose Leger as the first manager of the Columbia Fireflies.

This will be Leger’s seventh season in the Mets organization and second managing New York’s single-A affiliate. Last year the 2015 South Atlantic League Manager of the Year led the Savannah Sand Gnats to their second-highest win total in team history and a playoff birth. The Sand Gnats topped the Southern Division in each half of the 2015 season — finishing with a record of 84-53. Leger piloted the team to one of the best stretches of baseball in South Atlantic League history. In August, Savannah won 18 straight games — the longest streak in the majors or minors in 10 years — and finished the month with a 25-2-1 record. Ironically, it was a rain-shortened tie on August 23rd that snapped the win streak. Because of his success, the Mets added Leger to their Major League coaching staff in September of 2015. Prior to last season, the 33-year-old from Santo Domingo,

Dominican Republic, served three years as manager of the Mets’ advanced-rookie affiliate — the Kingsport Mets — in the Appalachian League. In 2013, he led Kingsport to a division title. In 2010 and 2011, Leger managed one of the Mets’ two Dominican Summer League clubs. Leger played professionally in the Minnesota Twins organization from 2004-2008 as a catcher and infielder. He also had a standout collegiate career in the Peach State. Leger started at Middle Georgia College (Cochran, GA) and helped lead the team to back-to-back Junior College World Series in 2001 and 2002. The infielder then played his final two seasons at Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, GA) and was an All-Peach Belt Conference selection in 2003 and 2004. This past winter, Leger was the bench coach for St. Lucie Mets (Advanced-A) manager Luis Rojas’ Leones del Escogido that won the Dominican Winter League championship. Leger also served as the hitting coach for the Dominican Summer League Twins in 2009.

Morales and his wife, Estela, have two sons: Jose Joaquin and Eduardo Jose. They live in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, during the winter.
