Dear Brother Knights, Summer is finally here and that means we have completed our fraternal year with lots of positive and upbeat achievements. Our council was busy with various service programs along with the introduction of a few new ones. This past year we also had a lot of opportunities of attending events and social gatherings where we could take our families. Keep in mind we still have our Parish Picnic in July and our Joint Council Picnic and our Family Camping in August. A proposed Bike Ride for Kids along with their Dads and Moms are also in the planning. Our sports program will be going on year round and we have some young energetic brothers that have come on board that will be looking at new ideas for the youth and younger brothers and families. So keep posted for new ideas and new stuff happening in the coming months.
I am sure you all will be spending a lot of family time throughout summer and will help in spreading the family atmosphere among us. We as knights and catholic men should do our best to foster family life style, invite friends along with their families to spend time with you and encourage kids to socialise with others. In our society today we see a lot of kids aloof, busy texting, listening to the IPod with their head phones etc. We don’t see much interaction among them. We all need to try our very best to get our kids or our grandkids to be more social and work towards community building. We need to look at the bigger picture cause if we don’t encourage or help them now, they will grow up to be adults that will not value interaction or social gatherings and not have much value for family life. Please try to encourage the kids to attend mass at least some weekdays during the summer break and bring them along to our monthly pancake breakfast and give us a hand with serving and flipping pancakes, any help is always welcome from brothers and their family members.
Lastly those members going away, have a safe and pleasant travel, be sure to send some pictures so we can publish them in our newsletter. Also one last reminder to pay your dues if you have not done so, remember if you do not pay we are forced to turn away other charities that look to us for some support. Vivat Jesus!

FIELD AGENT’S MESSAGE
Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent
Only Having “Through Work” Insurance Doesn’t Work Do you know anyone whose life or career has been drastically changed during these years of economic downturn? It’s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty now. Maybe there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change employers. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally-owned life insurance is not necessary.
Only having “through work” insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family’s actual needs. In fact, without a detailed needs analysis, any employer-provided coverage will likely cause a shortfall at the insured’s death.
In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. It will definitely be more expensive.
While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. I’ll be happy to meet with you and provide a no-cost needs analysis, so you’ll know exactly where you stand.
I am at 778-837-2317 or [email protected].

Our Annual Joint Council Brunch was held on June 2, 2013 and Council 6855 was
the Host Council for the event. In days gone by this event was held either at
restaurants or hotels and we had the breakfast catered. Over the course of the
years the prices started rising, the menus got shorter and the members
attending started dwindling. So it was decided at the last Joint Council meeting
that we would look at a way to hold the event where we could keep the costs
low and get more members and families to participate.
Our Local Joint Council Brunch was thus born and we tried to match the menu served at the hotel to encourage
members and families to come. We managed to keep the costs much lower than the hotel rates and I am
pleased to say that before we would have a problem in getting 50/60 members to come, this time we had a
record number of 170 members, guests and clergy that attended and had a hearty breakfast.
To make it more interesting we had a group of The 3 R’s who entertained the crowd with some line dancing and encouraged members and families to try out a few basic steps that was arranged and supervised by Lyce Rozario wife of our Advocate Bro Rick Rozario. Many thanks to Lyce and her group who gave their time in organizing this performance on short notice.
Before the close of the day the JC Golf Tournament Committee presented the winners with the trophies and certificates and thanked all that participated and sponsored the event.
We would also like to thank all the members and their spouses who worked long hours behind the scenes with
preparation of breakfast and setup/cleanup – a great team effort. Thank you – we could not do it without all of
you!

Once again as in the past we were honored to have the Travelling Icon pass
through our district and visit each council in the lower mainland, stopping at each
council for a week of veneration, prayers and reflections.
We were fortunate to have Our Lady of Guadalupe with us on the week of the
Feast of the Sacred Heart; we started with prayers and Rosary on Fri Jun 7 and
carried on till Jun 10 with a Honour Guard procession and veneration with Rosary
at our General Meeting. We had a total of around 256 people including members
and families that came out and prayed with us.
We thank the various groups of the parish who obliged us by coming up and praying the rosary on the various
days and also our parishioners who gave their time in venerating our Travelling Icon. A special thanks to Maria
Silva for supplying the beautiful roses for the week.
Thank you and God Bless

Brother Knights along with their spouses accompanied Msgr. Dennis Luterbach, Fr
Rodney Nootebos, Sr. Guadalupe and Sr. Maureen to the Mayfair Lake Golf and
Country Club on Saturday June 15 at 7 pm. We were around 26 members and spouses
in total and it was a beautiful day.
We all had a nice evening and also got to celebrate with Fr Rodney Nootebos,
because it was his birthday and we all sang and wished him for his birthday.
The Venue and the food were excellent and all who attended voted that this was the
best selection of venue so far, we have to thank Msgr. Luterbach for selecting the
place.
Thank you Brothers and the Ladies that came out to show our appreciation and
support to the clergy of our parish for all that they do for us all year round.

Brothers it gives me great pleasure to award the Family of the Month for June 2013 to Brother Charles and Doris Sze. Bro Charles has been a knight since 1992. He has worked with the same zeal and enthusiasm since when I joined the Knights of Columbus in 1998. Bro Charles was a champion in the Entertainment Books sales and was a key coordinator to its success in those early days. He is one of the top sellers of our Charity Appeal tickets and always renders more than his fair share of mall sales hours.
He is a regular usher at Sunday masses, feast days, occasions and supports all our events from Pancake Breakfast to our various Fund Raiser Dinner Dances, Joint Council events and also our Golf tournaments. He and Doris are always on hand to lend their help with set up or take down. Doris has been a tremendous support both to Charles and the Knights of Columbus, besides this she is an active member of the Catholic Women League (CWL) and the Parish Welcome Committee. Both are regular devotees to our Perpetual Adoration Chapel.
Besides the Knights of Columbus Bro Charles is an active Executive on the Lions Club of BC. He takes great pride in fulfilling his obligations. Bro Charles is also a 4
th Degree Knight and always on hand to support the Color / Honor Guard,
when required at all Major Parish and Archdiocese events.
Thank you Charles & Doris for all your love and dedication shown to the Knights for these past 21 years and may you be an example for all new knights to follow. God Bless you
Brothers let us congratulate Bro Meliton Ison as being chosen as the Knight of the Month for June 2013. Bro Mel has
been with the council for over 11 years and has been ever so active from the day he joined way back in 2002. He is
also a 4th
degree member and since joining the knights has been involved in a number of activities. He has been an
active member on the Executive Committee for many terms and been on various committees, Sports, Pancake
Breakfast, Dinner Dances, Fund raiser events, Joint Council Picnics, Food bank, Major Degree events, Conventions and
Degree Exemplification Team and is also an active choir member. Bro Mel has been a driving force behind our annual
Charity Appeal Ticket distribution and Collection and has been assisting each term to keep this event a success for our
council. Bro Mel is ever ready to help at any time of the day or evening and due to his close proximity, he is just a few
minutes away from lending a hand in our numerous events.
Thank you Bro Mel for all your help and support and for being there whenever we need your assistance. May you be
an inspiration to our brothers and support to all new brother knights.
