COLT Unified Communications
What we’ll cover today
> What we mean by unified communications (UC) and our unique approach
> Today’s IT challenges and what UC can do to help
> Different strategies for adopting unified communications
> Why we believe you should choose COLT
> Our unified communications portfolio and where it fits into the bigger picture
> Unified communications (UC) brings together equipment, software and services to enable the control, integration and use of multiple communication methods
> Users get control over all their communications from their phone/PC as well as access to network, systems and business applications
> Importantly, UC does all this while delivering an intuitive user experience and enhanced individual, workgroup and organisational productivity
> Unified communications includes voice (desk phone, mobile), messaging (email, instant message, voicemail) and conferencing (multi-party voice, video and screen sharing communications)
What are we talking about?
With UC, people can see a voicemail message in their email, click to set up a call to the originator’s desk phone (which can be routed automatically to their mobile if they’re away from their desk) setting up a ‘busy’ message in the recipient’s calendar so others know they are unavailable.
A quick example
> Converge your network for better efficiency, delivering cost benefits both in the short- and long-term
> Reduce human latency reaching the right people quicker
> Deliver implementation flexibility, allowing you to add services only when you need them
> Improve process efficiency with better communication and easier remote working

The COLT approach to unified communications
> We work at your pace to unlock the benefits UC can offer your individual business
> We begin by reviewing your business process
> We optimise communications through a single network
> IP everywhere, IP telephony (preferably with a hosted capability)
and email
> We help you improve customer service
Unified communications will help you address the following key issues:
> Lowering your fixed operational costs
> Reducing complexity to a single IP network
> Making ongoing management simpler and easier
> Improving mobility with no loss of service
Meeting today’s IT challenges
And delivering opportunities for the future
> Greater collaboration> UC helps the collaboration both within the company and with partners
> Even greater flexibility
> Because UC works with common IP standards it can be easily combined
with other applications
> Time savings> The organisation can benefit from improved communications and
business processes
Unified communications has become mainstream
A 2009 IDC study of European CIO challenges revealed the following:
Integrating IT and communications is the 2nd top priority for
25% of CIOs, just after security
52% of companies surveyed already run a combined IT and Communications strategy
Different companies, different strategies
> There is no one single way to approach UC
> You can start in many places> Network data, voice technology, data applications
> Where do voice and IP telephony fit?
> UC is very much a journey
The journey to unified communications
1 Convergence – realise network management efficiencies
2 Applications – integrate communication tools to increase productivity
3 Harmonisation – re-engineer business processes to enjoy the full benefits of the integrated communication tools

Prioritise based on your business processes
Add secondary applications for a full suite of functionality
Legacy infrastructure / separate voice and data networks
Convergence of voice and data networks at the core
Extension of convergence into individual sites in the wider network
