the handling of fi rearms.

ALWAYS make sure that the target and the area surrounding the target are

safe before shooting.

NEVER rely on the fi rearm’s safety mechanism and ALWAYS abide by safety

rules regardless of whether the fi rearm is unloaded or on safety.

ALWAYS make sure the barrel of the fi rearm is clear of obstructions

according to the safety and instruction manual.

ONLY place your fi nger on the trigger when you are actually aiming at a safe

target and have made the decision to fi re.

be Lincoln may have freed all men, but Sam Colt made them

equal. Th is post-Civil War slogan would have been music to Sam Colt’s

ears had he lived long enough to hear it. Yet, even before his death at the age of 47, he knew that his invention of a weapon capable of fi ring without reloading was

a tremendous success throughout the world.

Some 19th-century historians have gone so far as to say that Sam Colt’s invention altered the course of history. Whatever the case, when all was said and done, no one could deny that Sam Colt had achieved both fame and fortune known to few other inventors.

Sam Colt’s success story began with the issuance of a U.S. patent in 1836 for the Colt fi rearm equipped with a revolving cylinder containing fi ve or six bullets. Colt’s revolver provided its user with greatly increased fi repower.

Th e Colt revolving-cylinder concept is said to have occurred to Sam Colt while serving as a seaman aboard the sailing ship Corvo. Th ere he observed a similar principle in the workings of the ship’s capstan. During his leisure hours, Sam carved a wooden representation of his idea.

175 years ago, Sam Colt harnessed a dream and turnedit into one of the most historically signifi cant inventions of the modern world. Todayhis legacy continues.

More than 300 hours of Master level engraving and gold relief time went into producing what is truly a work of art. The gun is further decorated with high relief hand inlaid gold symbols of the Colt dome, John Browning’s bust, a Serpentine Colt , and a Rampant Colt positioned between the dates 1911 and 2011. The top of the slide exhibits the text “100 Years of Faithful Service” also hand inlaid in 24 kt. gold and the complete fi rearm is accented in inlaid gold borders. To further accent the exquisite gold work, the engravers artfully applied hand cut scroll engraving over most of the polished surfaces. To further commemorate this milestone, Colt is donating this fi rearm to the National Rifl e Association Foundation. It will be auctioned at the 2011 NRA Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to support their unending battle for the protection of the right to bear arms.

1836 PatersonFIRST BORN COLT

TTHE 1836 COLT Paterson 5-shot revolver was the first commercial repeating firearm employing a revolving cylinder with multiple chambers aligned with a single, stationary barrel. Its design was patented by Samuel Colt on February 25, 1836, and it derived its name from being produced in Colt’s fi rst plant in Paterson, New Jersey. Sam was 22. In 1845, units of the U.S. Dragoon forces and Texas Rangers engaged in fighting the Indians in Texas credited their use of Colt fi rearms for their great success in defeating Indian forces.

THE GATLING GUN is one of the best known early rapid-fi re weapons and a forerunner of the modern machine

gun. It was used by Union forces during the Civil War, the fi rst time it was employed in combat.

The Gatling gun was designed by Dr. Richard J. Gatling in 1861 and production by Colt began shortly thereafter. Gatling wrote that he created the gun to reduce the size of armies and so reduce the number of deaths by combat and disease, and to show how futile war is. Critics point out that General George Custer’s legacy might have been

diff erent had he accepted the off er to use a battery of Gatling guns before his fateful day.

He believed the heavy guns would impede his rapid march to the Little Big Horn.

Items recovered after the deadly ending with Texas Rangers revealed Bonnie’s Colt Semi-Auto.

TTHE .32 ACP COLT Model 1903 Pocket Hammerless was among the first semi-automatic pistols

designed by John Browning and built by Colt. Many gangsters of the pre-World War II era

favored the Model 1903 because they were small and easily concealed. It

is said that Al Capone kept one in his coat pocket and Bonnie

Parker used one to break Clyde Barrow out of

jail after smuggling it in by taping it to her thigh.

SETTING THE STANDARD

Model 1911THE COLT 1911 still defi nes the

standard for modern day semi-automatic pistols. The 1911 was the standard U.S. military

sidearm from 1911 to 1985 and is still frequently used

by civilians, law en-forcement, and mili-tary forces today. The

M1911 is the best known of John Browning’s designs to use the short recoil principle in its basic design. In addition to the pistol itself being widely copied, this operating sys-tem rose to become the pre-emi-nent type of the 20th century and of nearly all modern centerfi re pistols. It is popular with civilian shooters in competitive events such as IDPA, International Practical Shooting Confedera-tion, and Bullseye shooting. It is

also a popular civilian concealed carry option due to its slim width.

TODAY’S COLT

OVER THE LAST century and three-quarters, Colt has had many individuals at the helm, starting with Samuel Colt. Today, Colt’s leadership is as powerful as ever under the direction of Lt. Gen. William M. Keys USMC (Ret.) as President and Chief Executive Offi cer. A decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, General Keys took the helm of the company at a critical time and shepherded it through legal thicket and successfully reoriented the business back

toward profi t and growth. As a combat veteran and an avid shooter and collector himself, General Keys has provided the company with a leader who appreciates and understands fi rearms as few others do.

HOW IT ALL STARTEDMore than 175 years ago, an obscure young seaman, Calcutta bound, carved a model of what was destined to become the world’s most famous revolver from a block of wood. His name was Samuel Colt, and from the spark of his inventive genius, came the modern fi rearms of today. One would have to search diligently through the pages of history to fi nd a more romantic and glamorous fi gure than Samuel Colt. His was the mind of a genius, a planner and a dreamer, all in one. His vision was not local, but worldwide. His ambition exceeded mere prosperity and power. Complete satisfaction could only be his when he had reached the pinnacle of his chosen fi eld. His own deeds and the life he lived have immortalized him, and the products that still bear his name are a constant tribute to his ability and his resourcefulness. Samuel Colt’s eff ort to market his inventions is a record of amazing courage, ingenuity, and perseverance. That one so young in years and so handicapped by poverty and lack of prestige could prevail against such odds is one of the marvels of individual American enterprise.
