A slew of British Made films influenced how colour could be used to tell stories that weren’t cheery or bright. This was colour cinema with an edge and a grime to it, a cinema that wasn’t afraid to push to the fore the mechanism of its creation. This was far removed from the glitz and glamour of Technicolor of American cinema, although that too was about to change. Mi-chael Powell’s PEEPING TOM, was one of his most celebrated solo work pushed the mecha-nism of capturing the image to the fore. Mi-chelangelo Antonioni, 1966 BLOW UP, ni in all his films was incredibly exacting about the colouring in BLOW UP. The story goes that he didn’t like the shades of grass in the open-ing shot, so had it sprayed a different one.

As Europe came to terms with the after-math of WW2, surplus war time camera film flooded the emerging new markets. For the first time in decades young film makers had access to the means of production. With this they created films that looked forward and back simultaneously. DAISIES, Vera Chytilova, 1966Czech New Wave at its best; beautiful ar t direc-tion, amazing location shooting, gorgeous cos-tumes. A film that speaks of youth and deca-dence against a back drop of destruction. THE HOUR GLASS SANATORIUM, Wojciech Has, 1973 Polish surrealism that understands colours and their importance in creating atmosphere.
