Pockets of cosmic dust in the region block l ightfrom background stars and scat ter l ight f rom the embedded br ight s tar ( top) giving par ts of the nebula a character is t ic blue co lor .

ASA N10 f 3,6 gad Baca, Aus a www.bas.c/baca/as/NgC 6188 (emiSSioN NeBUlA iN ArA).The emiss ion nebula is found near the edge of an otherwise dark large molecular c loud in the southern constel lat ion Ara, about4,000 l ight -years away (the pic ture spans about 300 l ight -years) . Formed in that region only a few mil l ion years ago, the mass iveyoung stars of the embedded Ara OB1 assoc iat ion sculpt the fantast ic shapes and power the nebular glow with s tel lar winds andintense ul t ravio let radiat ion.

ASA N10 f 3,6 gad Baca, Aus a www.bas.c/baca/as/iC 1318 (emiSSioN NeBUlA iN CygNi).This large area of emiss ion nebulos i ty surrounds Sadr (Gamma Cygni) , the br ightest s tar in this photo and the hear t of theconstel lat ion of Cygnus the Swan. Numerous s tar c lusters can also be found embedded in the nebulos i ty . The two sect ions of br ight(yel low) nebulos i ty to lef t of Sadr are cal led the But ter f ly Nebula ( IC 1318); the large area of dark nebulos i ty that separates thetwo halves of the But ter f ly is LDN 889. The smal l open c luster NGC 6910 is just lef t and above of Sadr .

The c louds are par t of the Chamaeleondark c loud complex, the c losest low-mass s tar format ion region to the sun. The complex contains dust that ref lect s the blue l ight of nearby B- typestars , a few pink areas glow where energet ic s tar l ight manages to make hydrogen f luoresce. The c louds l ie 520 l ight -years away.

The Soul Nebula -off ic ia l ly dubbed IC 1848 - shines br ight ly in the red l ight of energized hydrogen. Several young open c lusters of s tarspopulate the image which spans roughly 150 l ight years across . The n ebula is around 6,000 l ight years from ear th.

Seen from our perspect iveagainst a r ich Mi lky Way star f ield, the Vei l Nebula is now known to l ie some 1,400 l ight -years away toward the constel lat ion Cygnus.

Nearby hot mass ive s tars - onlymil l ions of years young - radiate into the nebula with invis ible ul t ravio let l ight , s t r ipping elect rons from atoms. The elect rons eventual lyrecombine with the atoms to produce the vis ib le nebular glow. At an est imated dis tance of 6,000 l ight -years , the region shown is about250 l ight -years across .

To the r ight of the Nor th Amer icaNebula is the less luminous Pel ican Nebula. The two emiss ion nebulae measure about 50 l ight -years across , are located about 1500l ight -years away and are separated by a dark absorpt ion c loud. The nebulae can be seen with binoculars from a dark locat ion.

I t i s the nearest spiral galaxy to our own galact ic Mi lky Way. In 2006 observat ions by the Spitzer Space Telescoperevealed that M 31 contains one t r i l l ion s tars , more than twice the nu mber of s tars in our own galaxy.

Also known as the Seven Sis ters and M 45, the Pleiades is one of the br ightest and c losest open s tar c lusters . M 45 contains over3000 stars , i s 13 l ight years across and is about 400 l ight years away from ear th. Quite evident in the above photograph are the blueref lect ion nebulae that surround the br ighter c luster s tars .
