October 14, 2014 was an historic date for the Col-orado Section as Leslie Core-Drevecky, PGA

Head Professional at Murphy Creek Golf Course was sworn in as the first-ever female president of the Col-orado PGA. The new officers: President Leslie Core-Drevecky, Honorary President Barry Milstead, Vice President Ty Thompson & Secretary Ben Welsh, and the new Board Members Scott Erwin, Rick Ellefson and Jim Hajek along with the current board of direc-tors recited the oath in front of almost 300 Members & Apprentices at the Fall Membership Meeting, Tues-day, October 14 at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club.

The meeting opened with the Colorado Honor Guard Association posting colors and Creighton Middle School Brass Quartet performing the Na-tional Anthem. Creighton Middle School is a partic-ipant in the Colorado PGA Golf in Schools Program.

Sponsors represented at the Fall Meeting included KBS Shafts, Masek Golf Cars of Colorado, Imperi-al Headwear, Brooks Brothers, Ouray Sports and Golf MD’s. Lindsay Pitts, PGA from PGA of Amer-ica Business Development offered information on national PGA partners, while Bruce Lubach, PGA Employment Services updated Members on career and self-improvement.

As part of the education portion of the day, Col-orado PGA Board Members who also serve as Committee Chairmen addressed the Membership Survey questions and concerns and presented strategic plans for 2015 for each of the committees. This information is designed to help Colorado Sec-tion Members plan for their future business success.

The Pro-Pro-Pro Tournament followed the meeting with a chance for Members to enjoy sportsman-ship, camaraderie, sunshine and warm tempera-tures.

We started out the year with a message about “Leaving

a Legacy” at out Spring Member-ship Meeting. We talked about the importance of how one man or woman can make the differ-ence in the life of another. As our year is winding down to a close and we all are looking for-ward to recharging our batteries for the 2015 golf season, let me encourage you to seek out other Colorado PGA Members during the offseason and pursue com-munity (a social unit, and I don’t mean through your computer, that shares common values) with them.

Living in Colorado we are sur-rounded by the beautiful Aspen Tree. Aspens don’t do well alone. Did you know that the world’s largest and possibly oldest living organism is the Trembling Giant in Utah? That’s right; a single Quaking Aspen in Utah covers 106 acres of land and is estimated to weigh more than 6,000 metric tons. Aspens don’t do isolation. They do community. One of the hardest things to keep alive is the single Aspen. But in a communi-ty, they thrive!!!

That is why I am a firm believer in meeting together. By doing so we have an opportunity to learn from one another, support one another, speak life into one another, and thrive. We must never abandon the importance and value in meeting togeth-

er. Recently one of our Section Members sought out the advice of one of our more experienced PGA Members regarding his ca-reer. After sitting down with this thirty-six year PGA Member he came away with some of the best advice he has received. Be-low is a note he sent him:

“I would like to thank you again for the direction you gave me on how to prepare for an interview. I currently have 55 of the toughest questions that I can think of that I may be asked in an interview. Every day I have been reviewing these as a way to prepare me for my next interview. In my answers to these questions I am always asking how does my answer bring value and benefit to their

organization. I have role played several times as new questions get added. This has been extremely helpful in my preparation and what I’ve found is the more I prepare, the less I fear. I am very apprecia-tive of you taking the time out of your schedule to work with me. Thanks for all you do.”Why do I share this with all of you? This young-er PGA Member could have taken the “Lone Wolf” approach and tried to go it alone, but he sought out the advice and wisdom of someone who is very well respected and successful in our business, someone however that he had never really met be-fore. He sought community with another man so he could learn from him. Like I stated at our Fall Membership Meeting, I can practically guarantee you that if you seek out the advice of one of our Senior PGA Members, they will be more than hap-py to visit with you.

In closing, let me encourage you to seek out op-portunities to meet with other PGA Members, other men, other woman, to learn, encourage and grow. Seek out community. As a Section we will have several opportunities for you to do this during

the off-season, but you don’t have to wait for us to start. If you’re not sure where to start, give me a call and I’d be glad to set up a meeting with you and one of our well-respected Colorado PGA Members.

The Holiday Season is fast approaching so be sure to be on the lookout for our Colorado PGA Members who might need a wingman to get them through this time of year. For most of us it’s a time of year to celebrate, but for some of us we might need a friend as it can be a very lonely time of the year.

Call me if I can help!

Very Respectfully,

Eddie

The Trembling Giant - South Central Utah

Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club hosted the inau-gural PGA H.O.P.E. (Helping Our Patriots Every-where) Graduation Celebration on Friday, Oct. 17. The facility’s PGA Professionals introduced Fort Carson’s wounded veterans and their families to the game of golf this summer.

Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club partnered with Colorado PGA REACH, the charitable arm of the Colorado Section of PGA of America, to bring the game of golf to Fort Carson’s Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) members and their families. The WTB serves as a temporary assignment for sol-diers who are in the process of healing and learn-ing to adjust their lives to their challenges that their service injures have presented them. The entire program, including instruction, course fees, equipment, playing opportunities, as well as the graduation celebration, was funded by Colorado PGA REACH.

Encouraged by consistently large turnouts at each session, Cheyenne Shadows PGA Profession-al Paul Surniak went on to host a total of three sessions, each lasting an hour-and-a-half over the course of six consecutive Saturdays and Sundays. More than 100 veterans and family members attended the sessions. For the graduation celebra-tion, 40 wounded warriors were treated to an 18 hole event in a low-stress scramble format. Each participant received a Colorado Section PGA pull-over as well as food, drink, and prizes. The profes-

sional staff at Cheyenne Shadows, as well as the Colorado PGA were presented with an apprecia-tion award from the Warrior Transition Battalion that read, in part:

“All Members of the Warrior Transition Battalion of Fort Carson, CO thank you for your time, effort, support, and coaching. We thank you sincerely for your partnership and efforts. The impact has been significant and enduring. Rise Above. Find A Way.”

“It’s truly been an honor to introduce the game of golf to so many veterans and their families over the last few months,” said Surniak. “Golf is not only a great family activity, but serves as a great transition for these veterans to get back into ev-eryday life.”

The Colorado PGA, Colorado PGA REACH, and the more than 700 Members and Apprentices who grow the game on a daily basis, are proud to have been part of this life-changing program; and look forward to the coming years as this program expands throughout the Section boundaries.

course work required for Certification in Teaching & Coaching in a dynamic group learning environ-ment. Over the course of 11 weeks, we will work through the 14 required courses in the Teaching & Coaching Certification Series during 2 hour morn-ing workshops held at the GolfTEC Headquarters in Centennial, CO as well as in the West Chapter at the Country Club of the Rockies. Video conferenc-ing will allow the two locations to be connected as one for group discussions and presentations by the various guest speakers who will help facilitate the learning process.

This is an opportunity to enhance your skills as a PGA Professional, and to do so in a group setting that will allow for the sharing of best practices, innovative ideas, and fellowship. The course will be highlighted by guest speakers who are experts in their areas. Certification candidates will complete the 6 required elective courses on their own over the course of the schedule. At the conclusion of the course, candidates will be prepared to complete the CAPSTONE paper and the PROficiency test or the Teaching & Coaching Project option.

Upon completion of the 14 required courses and 6 electives, candidates will have one of two options based on length of Membership. The Taylor Cup is an bi-annual Ryder Cup style event between the Sun Country PGA and the

Colorado PGA which celebrates longtime section PGA Professional J.D. Taylor. Unfortunately, only one team was celebrating at the end of the 2014 edition hosted at the Sandia Resort, October 22-23, 2014.

Having jumped out to an 8-6 lead after the first day of Four Ball and Foursome matches, the Colorado PGA had their hands on the win multiple times in

the Singles Matches. It was the two-time defend-ing champions from New Mexico that mounted a late charge to draw even at 14 points each. Based on their previous win, the Sun Country Section retained the cup for the third straight year. The Colorado PGA remains ahead in the allt-ime series, 7-3-2.

Highlighting the Colorado PGA effort was Sherry Andondian, PGA Instructor at Valley Country Club that included a 7-and-6 victory over Sun Country’s Tony Hidalgo in Singles Matches. Also going un-defeated for the Colorado PGA was Mike Zarem-ba, PGA Director of Golf at Desert Hawk at Pueblo West. Click here for the full results.

This event is a 27-hole Pro-Am in which each nine has a different team format to include a Hot Ball Scramble, Low Gross/Low Net and 3-2-1.

Kevin Bolles, PGA Director of Golf at Boulder Coun-try Club, and his team of Jesse Truman, Mike Gor-ton and Darrell Perry combined for a team score of twenty-four-under-par 188 to win the Team Con-test. Tied for second place with a team score of 189 was Ken Krieger, PGA Professional at Chey-enne Country Club, and Joe Carlton, PGA Head Professional at Legacy Ridge Golf Course. Team Ken Krieger included Brad Graham, Bill Strickland and Brent Sherard. Team Joe Carlton included Mark Bless, Pat Mooney and Brandt Coles.

For the Professional contest, it was no surprise to have the 2014 Don Finsterwald Colorado PGA Play-er of the Year Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Profes-sional at Murphy Creek Golf Course, at the top of the leaderboard. Geoff finished each of the three nines two-under-par for a total six-under-par 102 to win by one stroke. He edged out Rob Hunt, PGA Head Professional at the Links Golf Course, who posted a five-under-par 103 taking second place.

The Valley Country Club Pro–Am presented by your Colorado Chevy Dealers was held on Monday, October 27th. The weather deteriorated through-out the day with light rain and graupel, which is snow that falls in the form of a ball, making playing conditions tough. This did not stop Geoff Keffer, PGA Assistant Professional at Murphy Creek Golf Course from turning in the only under-par round of the day!

Geoff posted a three-under-par 69 to win the Pro-fessional Contest. Finishing in second place with a round of even par 72 was Kyle Voska, PGA As-sistant Professional at The Links Golf Course. In a tie for third place with rounds of one-over-par 73’s was Rick Cole, PGA Head Professional at Ea-ton Country Club and Eric Bradley, PGA Assistant Professional at Eagle Ranch Golf Club.

For the team contest which was a Low Gross/Low Net format, Charles Perry, PGA Professional

Golf Instructor at GolfTEC combined with his team of Drew Johnson, Don Wilson and Shayne Harris secured the Team Contest with a score of four-teen-under-par 130. Finishing one shot back and taking second place was Team Geoff Keffer which included Lonnie Barnhouse, Frank Grabowski and Ken Eisenmenger. Rounding out the top three teams we had Ken Sanchez, PGA Assistant Profes-sional at Valley Country Club securing third place. Team Ken Sanchez included Dan Mong, Bob Griffin and Greg Symons.
