sletter | The Season is Here!

Hello Fellow PGA Members & Ap-prentices,

Spring is finally here and the 2015 golf season is upon us. I hope all of you have a spectacular year!

Special thanks to all of you who attended the Spring Business Meeting. I hope you enjoyed the presentation by Ty Thompson, PGA explaining the direction our Colorado PGA REACH is headed in 2015 and how its programs can help grow your business and most importantly, have a positive impact on the lives of others through the game of golf. With the addition of the Board of Trustees and their commitment to our Section, along with their passion for the game of golf; the 3 pillars (Youth, Military and Diversity & Inclusion) under Colorado PGA REACH will thrive like never before.

As a member of the Section’s Board of Directors, I’m truly excited about the number of candidates we had to fill the three open Board of Director At-Large positions that become open this fall. With the return of Matt Cohen, who has done a tremendous job on the Apprentice Relations Com-mittee, along with the vast experience of both AC Cox and Dave Troyer, we look forward to continuing our commitment of “Growing the Game & Serving the Members”.

I would like to personally congratulate all the West Chapter Award Winners and look forward to attending the Awards Presentation during the West Chapter Spring Meeting on Thursday, April 30th, 2015.

As always, we would love to hear from you. If you have any questions for the Section Officers, Board of Directors or Section Administration Staff, please don’t hesitate to contact any of us.

Sincerely,

District 9 Director Report PGA Annual Planning Session and Board Meeting RecapAs I mentioned last month, the annual Planning Ses-

sion and Board Meeting was held in Palm Beach Gardens in February. The PGA of America’s Officers, District Directors, Independent Directors, Executive Staff and Senior Directors were all in attendance. As has been discussed over the past few months, the Long Term Strategic Plan is our blueprint for success that will ensure that we become both a smarter and healthier organization for years to come.

The following points will guide us through the Long Term Strategic Plan: 1. Mission: Serve the Member and Grow the Game of Golf. 2. Revised Ground-Up Approach: Start at the Member-ship and Section Level vs. National pushing down. 3. 8 Core Products Identified to Ensure Balance in Programming against Breadth of Association Needs: Employment, Education, Player Development, Sections, PGA Reach, Championships, Properties and Global. I can tell you the open lines of communication in the boardroom have never been better, which will lead to following the path that has been put in place to benefit the PGA Member and the Association. Social Media Policy At the Planning Session and Board Meeting, the Na-tional Board adopted social media guidelines that will direct the PGA Officers and Board, relative to their social media interactions. Life Insurance At the same meeting, the Board approved an increase in the Life Insurance policy. In the past, all PGA Mem-bers were under the policy. Apprentices will be added to the policy starting in fiscal year 2016. By adding Apprentices, we were able to increase the Term Life Death Benefit to $15,000 for PGA Profession-als under 35; and to $10,000 for 35 and older. In the past, it was $13,250 for ages under 35; $6,600 for ages 35-49; and $2,650 for 50 and older. The premium is now $34 annually instead of $26.

PGA.org With the launch of PGA.org at the PGA Mer-chandise Show, we have already seen initial indi-cators of suc-cess, including: 1. More than 13,000 Members and Apprentices have accessed the site. 2. 45% of traffic is coming from mobile phones and tablets, due to the site being designed for mobile opti-mization. 3. More members have updated their profile in 30 days than they had in the past 4.5 years. PGA.org is a work in progress, and we will continue to look to add more features and benefits for the member. PGALinks will be shut down at some point this spring. You will be notified on the exact date when you visit the site. There is also a training video at PGA.org to help edu-cate you on how to take advantage of all the benefits of the new PGA.org. PGA Junior League Golf With the acquisition of PGA Junior League Golf, we have seen nothing but positive feedback and registra-tion interest for the upcoming season. If you have not already registered your team for the 2015 season, you can now go to the website and complete all information. As a reminder, all individuals involved with PGA Junior League Golf must go through the new background check process. Tying in PGA Junior League Golf with the PGA Grand Slam of Golf next October will give viewers an op-portunity to watch and see what Junior League is all about. PGA Junior League will be under the PGA REACH foundation, with profits used to support scholarships

of Junior League teams and other philanthropic efforts. Also, having Defending PGA Champion Rory McIlroy as our official Ambassador will assist in our efforts to grow this program over the next few years. PGA Ryder Cup By now, you know that Davis Love III is our 2016 Ryder Cup Captain. He will be at the helm, as we look to bring back the Ryder Cup to the U.S., at Hazeltine National Golf Club. This is coupled with the development of the Ryder Cup Committee, which has been overwhelmingly received by both the Tour Players and PGA of America repre-sentatives. Additionally, a streamlined Ryder Cup Committee was announced during the same time that will help steward the future needs of the Ryder Cup. The new Commit-tee members are: Derek Sprague - PGA President, Paul Levy - PGA Vice President, Pete Bevacqua – PGA CEO, Davis Love III, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. With Hazeltine National Golf Club in our part of the country, I would strongly encourage you to consider attending the preeminent global golf event next year.

PGA REACH and Folds of Honor Foun-dation Most of us have been proud sup-porters of the Folds of Honor Foundation since Day 1, when Maj. Dan Rooney and PGA Past President Bri-an Whitcomb announced the journey at the 2007 PGA Championship.

Recently, Folds of Honor and the PGA of America re-newed our relationship. This will ensure that our part-nership will provide greater opportunity for us to work together in support of the Military and their families. All of this falls under the Military Pillar of PGA REACH.

If you are anything like me, you are ready for the sea-son to begin. I wish you the best, and let us hope for a great 2015 start to the golf season! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected] Sincerely,

Kyle Heyen, PGA National PGA Director, District 9

Executive Director’s Report “All Politicians Lie”This is clearly my

favorite time of year. I love spring-time. New begin-nings. New oppor-tunities. All the hard work and preparation over the last several months have paid off and it’s time to begin a new season. One of the other reasons I like spring so much is the traditions of The Masters Golf Tournament. It is the only golf tournament that I watch from start to finish. Call me old fashion, but I still respect the time honored traditions of our game. Traditions like integrity, honor, respect, honesty and sportsmanship. To me The Mas-ters and the game of golf represent all these things.

These things still mean everything to me so when I watch the evening news and I hear a political strate-gist make the statement that “All Politicians Lie”, in his efforts to defend a Politian who lied about another in order to win an election, it shakes my very soul. What are we teaching our children by this example?

This Masters will be the 44th and last Masters that Ben Crenshaw will compete in. Can you imagine those words coming out of a golfer like Gentle Ben, Bobby Jones, Harvey Penick, or Byron Nelson? Golfers by no means are perfect, but true golfers and true profes-sionals try to uphold these traditions each and every day of their lives both on and off the golf course.

Ben Crenshaw has a reverence and graciousness for Augusta National and for this great game that we all make our living from. As PGA Professionals I hope we all have a reverence and graciousness for the oppor-tunities this game provides us, but I also believe we all have a responsibility to pass on the traditions of the game as well.

It has been said that the game of golf is the closest thing we have to the game of life. In life people look to others to lead by example. I’m proud to be a Member of the Colorado PGA where we have the

examples of Warren Smith, Vic Kline, Dow Finsterwald, Clayton Cole, and numerous other Colorado PGA Profes-sionals to follow.

As the 2015 Golf Season officially begins, know that you can make a significant impact in the lives of others through the game of golf. Also know that your entire Colorado PGA Section Staff is here to assist you in any way we possibly can to help you be successful. So please do not hesitate to call on us for assistance.

Very Respectfully,

Eddie Ainsworth, PGA

Three Colorado PGA Professionals were elected to serve on the Colorado PGA Board of Directors

during the Spring Membership Meeting on Monday, March 23, 2015 at Pinehurst Country Club. The three members are Matt Cohen, PGA Head Profes-sional at Country Club of Colorado, who will be serv-ing his second term, Ashely “A.C” Cox, Manager of Ed-ucational Development and Recruiting at GolfTEC, and Dave Troyer, Director of Golf at CommonGround Golf Course.

Each member will serve a three-year term on the Board beginning at the 2015 Fall Membership Meeting planned for October 12, 2015 and ending at the Fall Meeting in 2018.

About the New Board Members

Matt Cohen, PGA

Matt Cohen returns to the board having served since 2012 where he spent much of his time heading up the Apprentice Relations Com-mittee. “The ability to be able to give time, energy and passion back to the PGA of America and our Section with the goal of growing the game and continuing to el-evate the PGA Professional as the foremost expert in the business of golf means a tre-mendous amount to me,” Cohen noted before the elec-tion.

Matt has been a PGA Professional since 2001. Prior to his stint at Country Club of Colorado he served as the PGA Head Professional of the Persimmon and Ironwood Courses at Anthem Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona. He began his career at Ventana Canyon Golf Club in Tucson as the First Assistant Professional and Tourna-ment Coordinator.

Ashley “A.C.” Cox, PGA

Ashley “A.C.” Cox is the Manager of Educational Devel-opment and Recruiting at the GolfTEC Headquarters in Centennial. In his position, AC is charged with helping

facilitate the training of over 200 new hires at GolfTEC University, as well as manag-ing the content of GolfTEC’s ever growing internal Train-ing Center for its 650+ Certi-fied Personal Coaches. Prior to his position at GolfTEC, Cox spent ten years work-ing as an administrator in the PGA Golf Management Pro-grams at Campbell Universi-ty and North Carolina State University.

“I’m excited about doing my part to help further the goals of the Colorado PGA,” AC noted prior to the election. “I’m specifically interested in helping ensure the growth and success of our appren-tices and those members seeking to improve upon their education through the certification program.”

Dave Troyer, PGA

Dave Troyer has been a PGA Professional since 2001 and currently serves as the GM/Director of Golf at Com-monGround Golf Course. “After 21 years as a golf pro-fessional, the time has come for me to serve and give back to the PGA,” Troyer noted prior to the election. “I have truly been blessed, and would love the opportunity to draw from my experience to serve the Colorado PGA Section as a Board Member.”

Dave began his career an Assistant Golf Professional at Boulder Country Club in 1993 under the mentorship of Larry Collins. In 1999, he was given the opportunity to be the opening Head Professional at the Omni Interlock-en Resort. Four years later, Omni transferred Dave to Arizona to take over as the Director of Golf at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa. Soon after, Hale Ir-win Golf Services recruited him to manage the opening of the Jewel Golf Club in Minnesota as the General Man-ager/Director of Golf. In 2008, the Colorado Golf Asso-ciation hired Dave as the Director of Golf to oversee the opening of CommonGround Golf Course.

Being a PGA Professional demands a person to be able to accomplish many different tasks. From in-

structing a junior camp, to merchandising a golf shop and coordinating tournaments, PGA Professionals really have to do it all. Living in the mountains, like many of our Colorado PGA Professionals do, takes this idea to a whole new level.

Mike Swan, PGA Head Professional at the Club at Crested Butte is a perfect example of someone like this. Swan, a native of Vir-ginia, grew up skiing and golfing and was passionate about both sports. After seeing a picture of a guy swing-ing a golf club in ski boots, he knew exact-ly what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. After appeasing his parents by grad-uation from Virginia Tech, Swan packed up his car and drove immediately to Crested Butte. It was there he finally found his calling.

Mike managed to get a job as both a ski instructor that winter and an outside service member that same sum-mer. Mike progressed at both facilities and went on to become a PGA Member and earned his Level 3 in PSIA

(Professional Ski Instructors of America). After moving around to a few facilities to advance his career, Mike re-turned in 2011 to The Club at Crested Butte as the Head Professional. While he was happy landing his dream golf position, this didn’t leave any time for his winter passion.

In 2013, Mike proposed that the club create a ski ameni-ty for their members. On a shoe-string budget and with 1500 square feet, Mike designed and built the first ski amenity for the membership called “Slopeside.” After just one year, the club decided to expand the space to 6000 square feet and spent more than half a million dollars to remodel and expand the space. Slopeside is right on the slopes of Crested Butte Mountain Resort and offers an 80 car private parking lot, slopeside deck with fire pit, two lounge areas with bar and food, and 120 family size ski lockers. Mike continues as the Head Professional of the golf club but now as the additional title of Slopeside Director.

Swan isn’t the only employee at The Club at Crest-ed Butte to switch gears in the winter. Ryan Hoynac-ki, a PGA Assistant Professional at the club, turns his attention high up on the mountain during the winter. Hoynacki, a native of the east coast and a PGA Member since late 2013, is an accomplished Big Mountain Skier. Big mountain skiing takes place on what's commonly referred to as backcountry or extreme terrain - essen-tially un-groomed powder snow on dangerously steep, mountainous slopes. Currently ranked 30th, Hoynacki has won a Free Ride World Tour event at Crested Butte and has finished third twice this season at Crested Butte.

Other members, like Ben Welsh, PGA Director of Golf at EagleVail Golf Club, are accomplished ski and snow-

board instructors. On the golf side, Ben has been at EagleVail Golf Club for nearly ten years after mov-ing up through the ranks on the Front Range. He has served on the Colora-do PGA Board of Directors and currently serves as the Secretary of the Colorado PGA. On the snowboard instruction side, Ben can count as many if not more accomplishments.

Welsh has taught snow-boarding at Beaver Creek for the past 10 seasons. He currently serves as a train-er to the other instructors as well as an instructor to resort guests and the oc-casional private lesson. Welsh is certainly quali-fied to do the job. He has earned his Level 3 Snow-board Certification, Rocky Mountain Trainer's Accredi-tation, Telemark Level 1 Accreditation, Freestyle Accred-itation, Adaptive Accreditation, Children's Specialist 2 Accreditation.

“I love that teaching in the winter allows me to expand my net-work in our commu-nity and to exercise my teaching talent year-round,” Welsh noted about being a dual-sport teacher. “It has also been an amazing learning ex-perience to engage in a different indus-try, learn from other leadership and push myself physically and mentally in a differ-ent sport. I find great similarities and great differences between the two activities. I also have learned many things from the snow teaching certifi-cation process that I apply in golf instruc-

tion and management every day!”

There is a saying in the PGA that “Golf Professionals wear many hats but just one badge.” Whoever came up with that saying never could have imagined the number of hats our PGA Professionals in the mountains really wear.

Junior Golf

The Team concept for junior golf is exploding across the Colorado Section. From 8 participating facili-

ties in 2014 to a projected 50+ facilities for 2015, PGA Junior League has captured the imagination of PGA Professionals and junior golfers. Below, you will find a revenue model for a single facility with one team in a 4-team league. The program fee in the model is com-parable to youth team sports operating in the same sea-son and space as junior golf.

To get started, visit www.pgajrleaguegolf.com and click on the “Host a Team” banner in the middle of the page. If you have any questions, contact your Player Develop-ment Director, Keith Soriano, PGA at [email protected]

In six years of Colorado’s Golf in Schools Program we have seen exponential growth and demand for con-

cepts such as this. Our numbers are staggering this se-mester as we’re projected to reach more than 7,800 stu-dents from 39 different schools. Without a question, the Golf in Schools Program has quickly become an essen-tial tool in introducing kids to the game of golf, as well as a great stepping stone for other junior golf programs during the summer.

The Colorado PGA is now accepting program requests for fall semester Golf in Schools Programs. Whether you’re a PGA Pro or a Physical Education teacher, you can submit a program request form! We will be accept-ing requests through May 15, 2015. Forms submitted after this date may not be considered, so get yours in as soon as possible. While submitting a form does not automatically guarantee you funding for your program, those who do meet the funding requirements will be notified a week later. We look forward to reviewing your program request.

Click here to access the program request form.

A huge thank you to those who helped make Golf In Schools a huge success this semester! We anticipate this will be another big year for this program as we continue to greatly impact the lives of our Colorado youth.

Tournaments

The Fox Hill Club hosted the first Pro-Am of the 2015 Season. A new team format was

used where one PGA Professional combines with one Amateur to form a team in the One-Low-Net Team Competition. The course, a par 70 de-signed by Frank Hummel, was in fantastic shape coming out of winter and so was Dale Smigelsky, PGA Director of Golf at Collindale Golf Club.

Smigelsky showed no signs of rust as he maneu-vered the course firing a round of two-over-par 72 which secured him first place in the PGA Pro-fessional Contest. Rounding out the top-3 in the PGA Professional Contest was Dan O’Shaugh-nessy, PGA Head Professional at Fitzsimons Golf Course and Chris Johnson, PGA Director of Golf at The Pinery Country Club both posting scores of four-over-par 74’s.

In the team competition, a one low net format, Smigelsky teamed up with amateur and Fox Hill Club member Paul Schlagel for the victory. They combined to post an impressive seven-under-par 63 for a three stroke victory on the day. Coming in tied for second was the team of Tommy Wiles, PGA Apprentice Profession-al at Meridian Golf Club and Dave Detweiler, PGA Life Member. Wiles teamed up Greg Stringari and Detweiler with Kodi Hooper, posting rounds of four-under-par 66.

In the Senior Professional 50 for 50 event, Smigelsky’s rust free play also secured him top honors. Finishing second was Paul Lobato, PGA Head Professional at Me-

ridian Golf Club with a round of six-over-par 76. Ken Krieger, PGA Head Professional at Cheyenne Country Club rounded out the top 3 with a score of eight-over-par 78.

Thank you to Scott Stevenson, PGA Director of Golf the staff and membership for hosting the Fox Hill Club Pro-1 Am.

sletter | The Season is Here!

The Colorado PGA is launching a new, season-long Team Challenge for 2015 will the goal of creating a

fun competition that builds camaraderie along the way. The event will feature team captains, based off the 2014 Dow Finsterwald Player of the Year standings, who will draft teams of five or six other members, based off the number that register. Four events throughout the year will count towards the Team Challenge. How It Works• Teams of CPGA professionals are drafted by cap-tains then compete in 4 events over the course of the season.

• Team captains are determined by the final 2014 CPGA Player of the Year points list.

• Teams will be formed in increments of 5 or 6 play-ers (i.e. If 50 players there will be 10 teams of 5. If 60 players there will be 10 teams.

• A player must play in at least 3 of the 4 events to be eligible for prize money. Missing more than one event will constitute forfeiture of any winnings with no reimbursement of the entry fee. Missing one event will forfeit the appropriate percentage of winnings (i.e. If a team of 5 wins $1000 and one player misses one event that player would receive $160 (80% of the winnings) and the remaining players would receive $210 each.)

Entry Fee• $100 (90% gets paid out, 10% administration fee)

Points • The Low Team Challenge professional will receive points totaling the number of overall Team Challenge professionals registered multiplied by two (2.) A point distribution schedule will be determined with the highest scoring professional receiving no less than 10 points. No points will be awarded for no shows.

Registration Extended for 2015 Team Challenge

Pinehurst Country Club once again hosted the Spring Meeting & Pro-Pro on Monday, March 23,

2015. The 2015 season could not have started better; Mother Nature graced us with some great weather when compared to years past. Over 230 Profession-als gathered for the Spring Business Meeting and Ed-ucation. Another 116 professionals teamed up to kick of the 2015 season in the Pro-Pro.

Rob Hunt, PGA Head Professional at Links Golf Course and Kyle Voska, PGA Assistant Profession-al also at the Links Golf Course combined forces to post an eleven-under-par 59 to take home first place and $375 per player. Coming in second on the day was the team of Jeff Hanson, PGA Director of Golf at Red Sky Golf Club and Paul Lobato, PGA Head Professional at Meridian Golf Club recording a round of ten-under-par 60.

Thank you to Andrew Workman with Hole-in-One USA for his support of this event and the entire Colorado PGA. The Colorado PGA would also like to thank Jason Murphy, PGA General Manager and Kevin Vena, PGA

Head Professional, their staff and the membership of Pinehurst Country Club for hosting the Spring Meeting & Pro-Pro.
