color atlas of comparative veterinary hematology

PATHOLOGY BOOKSHELF Color Atlas Of Comparative Hematology By C.M. Hawkey and T.B. Dennelt This text/atlas contains approximately 500 color photomicrographs of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes/platelets from both healthy and ill animals. The majorii of these photomicrographs are from blood smears of nondomesticated mammals, birds, and reptiles, making this book a much needed contribution to veterinary hematology. The authors have demonstrated numerous blood cell changes, al- though the accompanying legends occasionally seem overly interpretive. A section on blood parasites, con- tributed by M.A. Pierce, emphasizes the morphology of avian hemoparasites and is an important reference for veterinary hematologists. While some of the photomicrographs can be critiqued for color balance, Veterinary artifacts, or focus, they clearly demonstrate the diag- nostic features for which this book will be used. The appendix on blood smear photomicrography indudes technical information and demonstrates effects of dif- ferent films and filters, but no practical recomrnenda- tions are offered. The Color Atlas of Comparative Vet- erinary Hematology is highly recommended for those interested In veterinary hematology. It is a particularly useful guide for identification of blood cells and hemo- parasites in reptiles, birds, and nondomesticated mammals.
