Brazilians mingle around a monument to Zumbi, king of Palmares, a commemoration of the three-hundredth anniversary of his death. The sculpture illustrates the importance of Zumbi in Brazilian historical memory. In fact, Brazil's National Black Consciousness Day, celebrated on November 20, was first called Zumbi day.
