COLONIAL
C NNECT NS Colonial Country Club Thomasville, NC April 2018 Newsletter
From Our Board President
Please excuse our mess! We are officially under construction, and our renovation projects have begun. Addison and his staff have removed the overgrown plantings around the clubhouse, and you can get a great idea of how much of our beautiful clubhouse they covered. Now that they are gone, the window replacement will begin. If everything goes as planned, by the beginning of May, our old rotted windows will be replaced with new maintenance-free windows. Painting the clubhouse inside and out will follow shortly thereafter. The Board would like member feedback on exterior and interior color choices. We have paint samples from Sherwin Williams, as well as the paint options from the interior designer from several years ago. These decisions should be made by the members and NOT just the Board. We welcome all your feedback and suggestions on paint as well as the other renovation projects that are planned. We are all working together to minimize the inconvenience and make sure that none of these projects hinder any of the planned events. In addition to the main clubhouse renovations, there are many more upgrades and improvements in the works. After looking at replacing the pool chairs, the Board decided to have them cleaned, repaired and re-strapped at a fraction of the cost of new chairs. We are exploring options to repair or replace the torn down awning at the pool in time for the pool opening on Memorial Day. Tommy Rice is working on repairing our dining room chairs. Once repaired, they will be completely refinished with new seat covers and padding. Say goodbye to the wobbly old chairs that didn’t match. There are fabric samples that Perry Skeen has provided, and, once again, we welcome your feedback on fabric choices. Thanks to Perry for working with us on the fabric. We just had our third board meeting in 2018. It is hard to believe that April is upon us. The members should be proud of the board members they elected this year. We have had some long meetings and have made some tough decisions, always keeping the best interests of the club and our members in mind. At the March board meeting, the Board voted an assessment of $100 that will show up on your April invoice, payable in May. The Board felt the need to take this action due to the lack of golf play the first three months of the year and the lost revenues. We don’t take these things lightly and appreciate your understanding. Stay tuned for a new membership drive that Dan Outlaw and David are finalizing right now. Tell your friends about Colonial and what a great golf course we have the pleasure to play. Tell them about all the renovation projects that we are doing to improve our club and get it back into pristine condition. Then, tell them about all the great members that Colonial has and encourage them to become members. Our goal in 2018 is 60 new members to celebrate our 60th anniversary. We can’t achieve this goal without everyone’s help. See you at the club!
Well Spring is here, but there is still a chance for snow. Only in
North Carolina as they say. With the warmer weather near, the
grass will start to green up and more golfers will be out there
dusting off their golf clubs and loosening up their muscles. As
we know this is one of the best times of year. Everyone is
excited for all the activity and getting back outside.
With the warmer weather means the pool is not far from
opening. We will have the opening pool party on Friday, May
25th and will also have a weekend full of events. Throughout
the summer we will have specials events and cookouts poolside
for your outdoor enjoyment.
Kim Dillard has been working hard to keep the tennis courts in
great shape through the winter months and he is excited about
the upcoming tennis season. If you are thinking about getting
back into tennis or need a few lessons, stop by the courts and
speak to Kim.
Addison has been working hard keeping the golf course in good
shape to survive the winter. With the colder weather that we
have had, it has been even more of a challenge this year. Over
the next couple of months, we will see if there was any damage
from the cold. Right now, the course is coming in well, but over
the next month we will know for sure.
We just started our new menus for the season and Jeff has
come up with some new items as well as keeping some of the
favorites. We will still have theme nights each month, as well
as the blue-plate specials, crab leg buffet, breakfast for dinner,
etc.
Dan Outlaw, our membership chair, has the spring membership
drive approved and we will start promoting over the next few
months. As you know, it is the 60th anniversary of the opening
of Colonial, so our goal for this year is to bring in 60 new
members.
Mark Dula is keeping busy overseeing the upgrades around the
Club. We have started replacing the windows and should have
them all in by the end of April. Once we have all the windows
in, our plan is to start painting the exterior of the Club, and
then the interior. We have also been working on the
landscaping around the Club House and it is about 90 percent
done. Once completed, the Clubhouse will look like a new place
and be ready for the next 60 years

March’s Book is ”Need To Know” by Karen Cleveland
In pursuit of a Russian sleeper cell on American soil, a CIA analyst
uncovers a dangerous secret that will test her loyalty to the agency—and to her family.
What do you do when everything you trust might be a lie?
Vivian Miller is a dedicated CIA counterintelligence analyst assigned
to uncover the leaders of Russian sleeper cells in the United States. On track for a much-needed promotion, she’s developed a system for identifying Russian agents, seemingly normal people living in plain
sight.
After accessing the computer of a potential Russian operative, Vivian stumbles on a secret dossier of deep-cover agents within America’s borders. A few clicks later, everything that matters to her—her job,
her husband, even her four children—are threatened.
Vivian has vowed to defend her country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. But now she’s facing impossible choices. Torn between loyalty and betrayal, allegiance and treason, love and suspicion, who
can she trust? - Good Reads

My name is Matthew Fary and I am a senior at High Point Christian Academy. For my senior project, I have chosen to host a golf tournament to raise money for the
V Foundation in memory of Mike Washburn. Mike was an amazing person and friend to a lot of people in the community. He was also an avid NC State fan and I feel like
raising money for the V Foundation would be an awesome way to honor Mike. My goal is to raise $1,500 through hosting a golf tournament and other donations. Please partner

Spring is officially here, but you wouldn’t know it with the recent weather. It has been a wild start to the season, and it has the bermudagrass confused as well. After last month’s warm snap, we saw the greens really start to jump out of dormancy and tees and fairways had started to wake up as well. We then hit another cold snap that shut everything right back down. The greens have slowly started to wake back up again, and we are seeing some green start to poke through on tees and fairways as well. The greens are coming in well and winter damage appears to be very minimal. There are a few small spots on some holes that are a little slower greening up than others but all the areas I have seen have living tissue in them. I am very pleased with the way the greens handled the harsh winter and I hope we are finally through with the cold weather. It is still too early to tell how much if any winter kill/damage we will see on tees and fairways, but I am hopeful it will be very minimal as well. I have taken several plugs from around the course, and they have all looked good which is a great sign. Aside from monitoring the bermudagrass transition, we have been continuing working on bunker detail, and we just have a few more holes left to go. We will also begin planting new material around the clubhouse in the next week or so, and I am excited for the finished product. As the weather warms up and more golfers are venturing out please remember to fill your divots and repair your ball marks as well as follow all cart rules. Thanks,
Addison Scott, GCS
