Which Standards• Remember that AASL has two sets of standards:

– Standards for your preparation – The AASL Standards for the Preparation of School Library Media Specialists – These are the standards used in the portfolio

– Standards for your Students- Standards for the 21st Century Learners – these will be embedded in assignments you design for your students, but these are not the standards you reflect on in the portfolio process.

Other Assessments• The signature assessments are a starting point

for writing the reflections. All assessments and artifacts from your coursework may be incorporated into the reflections.

• Your prek-12 application on coursework should also be used in the reflective writing process – this is perhaps most important – to see how you are applying the knowledge and skills acquired in school library media classes with prek-12 students.

Page 14: College of Education Department of Educational Technology and Literacy

Portfolio Essentials• The portfolio is introduced in ISTC 615 and/or ISTC 653

(The Organization of Knowledge) and structurally designed in ISTC 541 (Foundations of Instructional Technology).

Page 15: College of Education Department of Educational Technology and Literacy

• As candidates near completion of the program, they will write reflection statements correlating their program work, particularly as the work connects to PreK-12 students.

Page 16: College of Education Department of Educational Technology and Literacy

• It is not likely possible to complete the portfolio until a majority of coursework is completed.  The portfolio is to be completed as part of (three credits) of the final six credit program course, ISTC 789 (Practicum and Portfolio in School Library Media).
