Theresa’s work brings art and color to the stage

College of Arts and HumanitiesChange starts here.

Our mission is to instill knowledge, skills and values that will enable students to emerge as responsible citizens. In order to change the world, our students must understand it. The Arts arouse our curiosity and inspire our creativity. The Humanities prompt us to question and enable us to understand. In the College of Arts & Humanities, change happens every day.

Every day in the College of Arts & Humanities, students find their calling.

Theresa Lipinski Ham entered the theatre program planning on a career in performance. Winner of an Excellence in Fine Arts Award supported by donor contributions, she acted in several productions and was a member of the campus Improv Troupe, Hello Dali. Through her work

in departmental honors, she found that she also had an interest and real talent for the technical side of theatre. Her honors thesis helped her enter graduate school and earn an MFA in design. Theresa is currently a freelance designer in the Chicago area, and in Spring 2010, she won a Jeff award (a Chicago version of a Tony) for her costume design of The Glorious Ones at the Bohemian Theatre Ensemble.

Theresa’s experience is not unique. EIU faculty members have active careers as scholars and performers, and they bring their passion and expertise into their classes. Students are inspired by the excellence they see around them and are encouraged to raise their expectations of themselves.

Every day in the College of Arts and Humanities, faculty pre-pare students to lead rewarding lives and to enrich the lives of others.

Norm Lewis came to EIU in fall 1975 as a computer science major. He had decided to transfer to another school after his freshman year. But things changed when, as he says, “On a lark, I volunteered at the Daily Eastern News.” After he was invited to become a DEN editor in fall 1976, he decided to remain at EIU and major in journalism. As he explains it, “This unexpectedly led to a terrifically rewarding career. I met a profes-sor, David Reed, whose example prompted me three decades later to return to school for a doctorate and the academic life. Eastern Illinois gave me a career. More important, it helped shape my character.” Before pursuing his doctoral degree, Norm Lewis worked for 25 years in news-papers, ranging from the Washington Post financial desk to three dailies

in the Pacific Northwest where he served as an editor and publisher for 15 years. Dr. Lewis has been an assistant professor of journalism at the University of Florida since fall 2007. He was the University of Florida Teacher of the Year in 2010.

Our faculty know their students as people as well as learn-ers. They supervise student organizations and activities outside of class, take time to learn about students’ lives, and help students become responsible citizens and professionals. Side by side with students, fac-ulty turn learning into action, bringing the arts and humanities to life across the state and the region.

Every day in the College of Arts & Humanities, students learn about the historical and cultural traditions that form the ba-sis of our modern world.

Despite the many educational resources at EIU, we recognize that the best way to learn about the world is to go out and experience it. Soon after she arrived at EIU, English Professor Dagni Bredesen was on the move again, developing a study abroad program in South Africa. Her students experienced another culture from the inside, learning with and from South Africans and volunteering with service organizations. As Dr. Bredesen notes, this transformative experience follows them home: “Students who participated in the South Africa program returned to the States with a new commitment to making the world a better place.” Dr. Bredesen has since mentored other faculty wishing to develop study

abroad courses and has also taught through EIU’s partnership with Harlaxton College in England. Her passion for literature, teaching, and introducing others to the world through hands-on experiences abroad ignites our students’ imaginations and inspires them to be lifelong learners and travelers. Our faculty commitment to global learning helps our students become engaged, thoughtful citizens, ready to address the many complex situations they will face.

Dr. Bredesen is only one of our many talented, dedicated fac-ulty. Using innovative technologies, professors bring the world into their classrooms and then take their students out into the world. Every day in the College of Arts & Humanities, we change lives, and we change the world.

the lives of students who in turn are inspired to make a difference as they enter the workforce.

A message from our DeanPeople are at the center of everything we do in the College of Arts & Humanities. We are committed to lifelong intellectual and personal growth through learning in the disciplines of Art, Music, Theatre Arts, Communication Studies, English, Foreign Languages, History, Journalism and Phi-losophy. We open our doors to the region by sponsoring artistic, cultural, and intel-lectual programs for our local communities

of children, working adults, and retirees. People—faculty and staff, stu-dents and community members—come together to appreciate the arts and discuss the important ideas and traditions that define us as human beings.

Every day in the College of Arts & Humanities we open our imagina-tions, fire up our curiosity, and explore new ideas and create works of art. Every day in the College of Arts & Humanities, people cultivate their best selves—intellectually, creatively, professionally, and personally. I invite you to join us.
