According to Apple, iPads are currently used in approximately 90% of SA’s

independent schools. The American Academy of Paediatrics and Therapists

recommends the following wrt iPads and children:

- Screen exposure to children under two should be discouraged;

- For slightly older children, entertainment screen time be limited to less than one or

two hours per day;

- Media devices should be banned during mealtimes and bedtimes;

- Screens should be kept out of children’s bedrooms;

- Parents should view programmes with their children and take an active role in

discussing their values;

- Regular physical movement be encouraged every 15 to 20 minutes; and

- Children should maintain a healthy posture when using devices.

Herewith a brief synopsis of the past fortnight’s news:

Our SP pupils performed admirably at the Inter-Schools’ Athletics held at

Camps Bay. The following have been selected for zonal trials: Holly Brady

(Gr 4), Liveni Benya (Gr 5), Kirsty Davies (Gr 7), Eleni Tsombanellis (Gr 5),

Freddie Needham (Gr 5) and Bobbi Brown (Gr 5). Thanks to our enthusiastic

parents, Mr Client Musamba and all the Staff for their assistance and support

over the past few busy weeks.

The Matrics of 2014 along with their parents attended an informative Matric

Info Evening. It was a pleasure to hear from one of our 2013 high-achievers-

Joseph Preyer, along with a UCT representative.

Academic update: One of our exceptional Matrics of last year, Anne-Marie

Wessels, achieved an additional A after a remark. She therefore achieved 7

subject distinctions! Congratulations!

College students were addressed by Paul Mesarcik of ThingKing (see www.

thingking.co.za). A mechatronics course is being offered to College

students. Please contact Ms Candice Du Toit for details.

The College Dance students attended an indigenous Dance Workshop over the weekend at Rustenburg High School. This forms part of the IEB Dance Studies curriculum. Well done to the Dance students and thanks to Ms Donna Baird for facilitating the event.

Valentine’s Day was enjoyed by all on our campus. Funds raised by the SP

pupils have been donated to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, and College

raised funds to assist Kayleigh Davies. We acknowledge the generosity and

kindness of so many young people.

Sean Veldboer (Gr 5) attended the national Judo ranking competition in

Pretoria, where he attained bronze. We are most proud of you, Sean!

A group of College athletes attended the sectional athletic trials at

Vygieskraal- Rebecca Rogers (Gr 12), Thorin Jankowitz (Gr 8), Zano

Pupuma (Gr 11), Tim Kapend (Gr 10), Wannie Janse van Rensburg (Gr 10),

Marek Miller (Gr 9) and Bakhe Maphumulo (Gr 9). Thank you to Ms Shelley

Robertson and well done to our athletes.

Donovan Breytenbach, Jack Taggart and Taahir Mohammed (all Gr 10) along

with Mr Dean Anthony went with the cricketers from RH Constantia to

KwaZulu-Natal to compete against several KZN schools (Maritzburg College,

Westville BH, Treverton and Thomas Moore). We are proud of their perform-

ance- well done!

Our SPs entered the Literary Quiz held at The Grove. Our team comprised:

Werner Kurth (Gr 7), Jack Cullen (Gr 7), Mark Gordon (Gr 7) and Charlie

Brown (Gr 7). Thanks to Mr Andrew Thomas and Ms Linette Hugo for their su-

pervision and well done to our pupils.

Congratulations to the U11 cricket team on their recent victory (Camps Bay)

and special congratulations to Uzayr Emeran (Gr 5) on his 50, not out!

The College students were addressed by Chaeli Mycroft and Grant Kruger at

their assembly (see the Chaeli Campaign). What inspiring young people.

The SP Inter-House swimming Gala today saw lots of spirit, fun, team sup-

port and some excellent swimming. Thank you to Mr Client Musamba and all

Staff for their hard work, and to our parents for braving the noise.

# We need your child to arrive punctually each day- school starts at 07:45 for Col-

lege and 08:00 for SPs. Late coming is educational counter-productive.

# We need your child at school each day. One day’s absence has significant educa-

tional implications.

# We implore you to drive with respect and patience in and around the school. Im-

patience, hooting, swearing and anger only serve to aggravate the situation and

upset everyone.

Child-movie star Shirley Temple recently died (10

Feb, 2014). She was 85. “I stopped believing in

Santa Claus when I was six”, she famously said.

“Mother took me to see him at a department store

and he asked me for my autograph”.

CYCLE TESTS NEXT WEEK

February and March will be the time when most outings will be taking place. We

have the Grade 11 Artscape workshops, several Art and Design events, and vari-

ous other smaller group events. Afrikaans set-work and English set-work pres-

entations and talks will be taking place on campus for our Matrics. There are

also several Olympiads and external competitions lined up for this time.

Well done to our Senior Executive Academic Portfolio for their initiative in the

promotion and setting up the weekly brain-teaser.

Matric Matters

The two most important things for our Matrics at this stage are simply to be

keeping up with their tasks and prioritising study time for tests. A large amount

of content needs to be covered in every subject this term and the pace of new

information being taught will continue to be fast.

CULTURE VULTURE !

Greetings from the College Culture Vulture On Wednesday the 19th of February the Grade 9 Band made their musical debut during assem-bly. WOW! They were amazing! A huge congratulations to Jake, Finn, Matt, Mark, Dylan and Marcel! Thank you for nurturing this talent, Mr Deck! We all look forward to seeing more of you! Looking forward, I hope that all of you have diarised the 13th of March when Reddam House ASB is celebrating Afrikaans! We have guest speakers throughout the day and a mini-show at 18:00 - AFRIKANERS IS PLESIERIG! There will be traditional drinks and snacks on sale and the evening promises to be a whole lot of fun! See you all there!

Thank you to the Shaff family, Mrs Oelofse and Mr Kruger for their kind contributions of books to the Library! Mr Richard Albert, who used to go to CBC before it became Reddam ASB School, has donated a very large amount of his father, Mr Eddie Albert’s books, to Reddam. There are some valuable Art, History and Jewish books among them! We really do appreciate this gift. The Grade 4s have enthusiastically been using the Library right from the start of the school year! There is a weekly prize for a Library Quiz question which can be seen on the SP notice boards.

The Library monitors for this term are Cami Steele and Malaika Mbuli.

EXCLUSIVE BOOKS KIDS LITERARY

QUIZ The quiz was held on the 14

th February at the

Grove School. Our team consisted of Jack Cullen, Werner Kurth, Charlie

Brown and Mark Gordon. Over 30 schools competed and everyone had an enjoyable afternoon. Well done to Sweet Valley and Herzlia who went through to Nationals, which was won by St Johns from Johannesburg. A very tough competition indeed! Andrew Thomas and myself accompanied the Pupils.

ATHLETICS On Saturday 15th Febru-ary I took 5 athletes to sectional trials at Vygiesk-raal stadium. I am so proud of the students, who with never ever training on a proper athletics track did exceptionally well under the circumstances, that being the 35 degree Cel-sius heat! All the best to the 4 students going into the next round which will take place on Saturday 1st March at Vygieskraal. Timothy Kapend came 4th in the final of the 100m and 3rd in the Long Jump of U17 Boys age group, and qualifies in both events for the next round of trials. Wannenberg Janse van Rensburg came 3rd in the High Jump and 4th in the Long Jump of U17 Boys age group, and qualifies in both events for the next round of trials. Rebecca Rogers came 2nd in the 400m and 800m re-spectively in the Girls U19 age group, and qualifies for both events in the next round of trials. Thorin Jankowitz came 1st in the U15 boys shotput and qualifies with an excel-lent throw of over 9m . Well done to Bakhe who participated in the U17 boys 100m, but unfortu-nately did not qualify for the next round of trials.

GIRLS TENNIS Well done to the Girls U19 Team who beat Hershel 8-6 on Tuesday afternoon. I am so excited to see the progress in this team and

BOYS TENNIS Our Boys U19 team has had a very successful sea-son so far, they have only lost 2 matches and now play Wynberg in the play offs this week. Well done to Sias Merkling, Nick Ben-nett , Johnny Sparks, Ja-son Setton, Nathan Moleka and Josh Sharpe. I am so proud of you all.

INTERHOUSE GALA On Thursday 27th February from 09:00 – 13:00 will be the much anticipated inter-house gala takes place. This week the students were given a letter about the gala and it was e-mailed to the parents. It is a compulsory school event as it happens during the school day. Parents are welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing you at Long Street baths next week.
