ORIENTATION FOR FRESHMEN AND TRANSFEREES
1ST SEMESTER, SY 2009-2010
As the new school year begins, a number of fresh faces and fresh
minds were added to the UB family. To welcome them in the university –
their second home, the Guidance Counseling Office with the help of the
student volunteers from Society of Peer Facilitators, Organization of
Psychology Students, Student Assistants, Student Government and
Westernian Advocate once again conducted an orientation for freshmen and
transferees last June 9 and 10, 2009 at the Auditorium from 8:00 am to
12:00 nn. The orientation activity is a bi-annual event designed exclusively
for new comers and it aims to familiarize the students with the surroundings,
conditions, rules and regulations, and the services of the university.
The first day was intended for the students from the College of
Education, College of Business and Accountancy, College of Tourism and
Hospitality Management and Technical Education Department whereas the
second day was scheduled for the students from the College of Allied Medical
Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering and College of
Nursing and Midwifery.
A total of 1,242 students from different colleges attended the
orientation program. Figure 1 shows the distribution of attendees from each
college. There are 12 students from the College of Allied Medical Sciences;

165 students from the College of Arts and Sciences; 233 students from the
College of Business and Accountancy; 47 students from the College of
Education; 272 students from the College of Engineering; 69 students from
the College of Nursing and Midwifery; 155 students from the College of
Tourism and Hospitality Management and 289 students from the Technical
Education Department.

The first part of the program was an amazing race activity focusing on
the 12 different departments and offices – Dean’s Office (CAMS, CAS, CBA,
Education, CTHM, Nursing, Tech. Ed., Engineering), Registrar’s Office,
Accounting Office, Guidance Office, Cashier’s Office, Clinic, Security Office,
OJT Office, Property, LRC, Maintenance and SAEP - of the university which the
students should be aware of. Stations were plotted near the original location
of the offices/departments.
After the amazing race activity, the program was continued at the
Auditorium where Dr. Abegayle Perez-Chua, VPAA; Dr. Hernando B. Perez,
University President and Atty. Jesus V. Mayo welcomed the freshmen and
transferees. Discussions about the University of Batangas itself from the
mission, vision and philosophy of the school down to the general rules and
regulations were also given to the students. Also, for the information of all it
was announced that starting this school year, students studying in this
university will no longer be called “Ubinian.” Instead, they will be called
“Brahmans.” Awards, tokens and prizes from the Office of the VPSEA and
Corporate Communications Office were given to students who actively
participated in the orientation program. The Nursing Department also gave
timely and relevant information about the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, how to
keep ourselves safe and to prevent the virus from spreading.
Before the orientation program ended, an evaluation was given. The
students evaluated the activity using the following scales: 5 – Excellent, 4 –
Very Good,
3 – Good, 2 – Fair and 1 – Needs Improvement. The summary of evaluation
for the activity was presented as follows.

A total of 478 freshmen and transferees evaluated the activity. Table 1
shows the result of the participants’ evaluation of the activity. The activities
provided the students with adequate and relevant information about the
university's policies, rules and regulations; services of the different
departments and offices; mission, vision, and philosophy; etc., having a
mean of 4.45 (Very Good); the activities like the amazing race contributed to
their learning having a mean of 4.29 (Very Good); the survival guide
provided in the kits is of great help for the adjustments of the students in
college having a mean of 4.37 (Very Good); the participants were able to
appreciate the values of teamwork, camaraderie, discipline and respect
having a mean of 4.36 (Very Good); the facilitators were courteous and
friendly and were effective in guiding us throughout the activities got a very
good rating of 4.41 and 4.33, respectively. The venues (Campus, Auditorium
and Gymnasium) were conducive for the activities and for learning having a
mean of 4.45 (Very Good) and the activities were worth their time since the
students learn and have fun at the same time having a mean of 4.37 (Very
Good).
Overall, the activity was rated VERY GOOD by the participants having
a mean of 4.39. The participants also expressed their comments and
suggestions about the activity, as follows:
“The idea of amazing race is good because it can help students to
familiarize the different places her in school. But to tell you honestly it
really makes me perspire. God Bless and more power.”
“I am proud to be one of the students of University of Batangas!”
“I’m glad I’m here at the University of Batangas. It’s undeniably the
best.”
“The campus was amazing and the officials and people are friendly.”
“You have a great concern for the freshmen students and at the same
time you will make the students easier to learn what they want.”

“Thank you for a warm welcome. I enjoyed my first day at UB. No
doubt, UB is undeniably the best!”

“The amazing race is excruciating yet enlivening. The guards are very
approachable. The orientation was better than I thought. I salute you

“Coordinators and staffs are well trained when it comes to social

This is the second time that the amazing race activity was done and it
was again appreciated by the participants since they learn and had fun at
the same time. It contributed a lot to their learning and familiarization of the
school’s surroundings. Another orientation similar to this one is
recommended.
