Tips for attending a college fair

Mobile StudentRegistration! It just keeps getting earlier and earlier that young people

are asked “What are you going to do with you life?”For those who are in the midst of their high-school

education, the time is now to act on those plans and pick a college to set them on the path for the career of their choice.

Many will take an important step in that direction by at-tending the 2012 Saint Louis College Fair, sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

The fair will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 21 in the Simon Recreation Center at Saint Louis University.

Parents and students will be able to meet with representa-tives from various colleges and universities to discuss admis-

sion and financial aid at those institutions. Counselors will be onsite to help students find colleges that suit their interests. Admission representatives will discuss course offerings, college life and financial aid requirements.

The fair will include workshops on financial aid, how to choose a college, how to write a college essay, and informa-tion about the NCAA. Additional features of the fair include a counseling center where counselors will answer admission questions, and a resource center to help students in their tran-sition from high school to college.

The fair will bring together students with the resources they need to set them on the path to their futures.

The benefits of onlinestudent registrationStudents register for the fair one time. It also eliminates the need for college contact cards.Entering the information one time allows the student to elaborate on spe-cial interests, extracurricular activities, and accomplishments.

If a smartphone is not available log on to www.gotomyncf.com to pre-register for the electronic lead retrieval system.

Students can register for NACAC National College Fairs with their Smartphones by going tohttp://mobile.gotomyncf.comor by scanning the QR code here:

Here are some useful tips from the National Association for College Admission Counsel-ing for students planning to attend one of its college fairs.

Before the fair:Answer the following questions to help de-termine what kind of school would be best for you:• Do you want to attend a two- or four- year institution? Co-ed or single sex?• What size school do you want to attend?• What programs of study are you considering?

• How far from home do you want to go?• Do you wish to participate in any specific extra-curricular activities or athletics?• Do you want to attend a school in an urban, suburban or rural environment?• Do you require any special services (i.e. tutoring, note takers, readers, TDD or interpreters)?• Discuss your college plans with your guidance counselor, family, teachers and friends. • Research your colleges of interest on the Internet and in your guidance office/library. • Check dates and registration deadlines

for college entrance examinations.• Register before heading to the fair. • Download and print the checklist to take with you to the fair.

At the fair:• Pick up a bag and a fair directory.• Visit with colleges and universities which you feel meet your criteria.• Talk with a college counselor at the Counseling Center if you have any questions or need help with your college search. • Attend a workshop.

Many job seekers and career chang-ers are looking for a profession that

is ripe with opportunity and a personally rewarding livelihood. Nursing offers these qualities, as well as job stability, flexibility and advancement potential.

Registered nursing—already the larg-est healthcare occupation with 2.7 million jobs—is on a massive growth trajectory1. Employment of registered nurses (RNs) is expected to increase by 26 percent by 20202. Many employers prefer to hire nurses who have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree so they can meet the

needs of an evolving industry. For those looking to transition to the field,

some schools offer accelerated BSN degree programs. Chamberlain College of Nurs-ing, for example, enables students to earn their BSN degree in as few as three years of yearround study*. In addition, students can earn advanced degrees, such as a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a specialization in the in-demand area of nursing education.

The high level of fulfillment and diverse opportunities provided by the nursing profes-sion can make it a rewarding lifelong career. Visit chamberlain.edu for more information.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is a nationally recognized institution

that boasts a 17-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio and offers the advantages of a small, liberal arts college with the lowest tuition of all 12 state universities.

The campus is situated on 2,660 acres of forested woodland atop the bluffs overlooking the natural beauty of the Mis-sissippi River’s rich bottomland. Despite its tranquil setting, it is only 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis, which is home to nationally known Fortune 500 companies, professional sports venues and cultural offerings.

The Gardens at SIUE—a 35-acre public botanical garden recognized as a Signature Garden by the Missouri Botanical Garden—

and a 380-acre nature preserve are avail-able to students for research and study.

More than 14,000 students, includ-ing more than 2,000 freshmen, interact with faculty at all levels, a critical factor in academic success. The University offers a variety of scholarship opportunities and an atmosphere committed to diversity.

The fall 2012 freshman class includes approximately 550 merit and need-based scholarship recipients with an average ACT of 27, who have been recognized for their academic abilities and talents.

In addition to its emphasis on un-dergraduate education, the University is focused on faculty research, creating prac-tical applications for student learning. Since 1957, SIUE has been shaping the future in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The University offers 44 undergraduate and 70 graduate and professional programs in the arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and nursing. The schools of Dental Medicine and Pharmacy award a professional degree in dental medicine (D.M.D.) and pharmacy (Pharm.D.)

There has never been a better time to check out the new Lindenwood

University, and with the ability to schedule a campus visit or apply online, doing so is easier than it has ever been.

Though Lindenwood has been on its beautiful 500-acre St. Charles cam-pus since 1827, enrollment has grown dramatically over the last two decades, and the campus has grown and changed as well during this period of rebirth. Eight new residence halls have been built since 2000, along with the Spellmann Center, the J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts, the expanded and renovated Harmon Hall,

and the Evans Commons, which opened last year and offers an array of ameni-ties for students, including athletic courts, gym-quality workout facilities, and a food court-style dining hall.

Lindenwood offers a range of scholar-ships and aid, starting with the $14,200 Bright Flight Scholarship, for Missouri students who score 31 or better on the ACT. Other scholarships are available to incoming freshmen with differing levels of awards-qualifying academic achievement.

Visit online at www.lindenwood.edu/admissions and select “Undergraduate,” or call 636-949-4949.

Dual-enrollmentprograms jump-start

students’ careersIn today’s globally competitive economy, a

college degree is increasingly becoming a critical factor in attaining career success.

Addressing the need for more col-lege- and employment-ready high school graduates, many policymakers, educators and researchers promote dual-enrollment programs as an effective vehicle for build-ing a workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a 21st century economy.

Dual-enrollment programs allow high school students to jump-start their postsec-ondary education and career by enrolling in college courses before they graduate, earning both high school and college credits in the process.

DeVry University, for example, launched its Advantage Academy in 2004 to improve college access for high school students with limited financial resources. In two academic years and one summer session, students can earn an associate degree in a high-growth career field while they finish high school.

Eligible high school students in the public school systems in Chicago, Atlanta and Columbus, Ohio, may enroll to earn their associate degree in health information technology, network system administration or web graphic design. Graduates of the program can either enter the workforce or enroll in a bachelor’s degree program at DeVry University or another institution.

“Dual-enrollment programs help meet a growing need for more academically and professionally prepared high school students, arming them with tools and resources that can improve their college and career decisions,” says Steve Pappageorge,

dean of the College of Continuing Educa-tion, New Programs and Outreach at DeVry University. “Programs like DeVry Univer-sity’s Advantage Academy can help remove barriers to college access while introducing students to career opportunities in high-demand fields.”

Triplets Simeon, Sydney and Shea Spivey can attest to the value of dual-enrollment programs. Each of the incoming high school seniors is deep in college planning mode and currently enrolled in Advantage Acad-emy. Columbus City Schools (CCS) and DeVry University cover their tuition costs, so they can graduate from high school with two years of higher education to put toward four-year degree programs without incurring student debt.

“Advantage Academy has helped me become more familiar with the college experience and realize all of the benefits it offers,” says Simeon Spivey. “My siblings and I hope to attend colleges on the East Coast, and we feel more confident knowing we’ll be applying with associate degrees under our belts.”

When they graduate in June 2013, the Spivey triplets will be two years ahead of their peers academically.

By 2018, approximately 63 percent of the 47 million U.S. jobs will require workers with some postsecondary education. Dual-enrollment programs provide high school students with an effective on-ramp to col-lege and career success, helping to close the gap between students’ knowledge and the skills needed to achieve professional success in a globally competitive economy.
