    I. Purpose

    IPAMisuniquecollectionofarchivalresearchmaterialsrelatingtothehistoryandperformanceofclassicalpianomusic,fortheuseoffacultyandstudentsintheSchoolofMusicattheUniversityofMaryland,forTheClaricemanagementstaff,andforoutsideuserswhomaybeprofessionalpianists,scholars,and/orgeneralmusiclovers.DocumentationstrategiesandfurtherexplanationofsubjectstrengthsareavailablefromtheIPAMCurator.

    CoordinationandCooperativeInformation:IPAMcomprehensivelycollectsrecordingsinallformatsofclassicalpianomusic,aswellaspublishedscores,inconjunctionwiththelargercollectingactivitiesoftheMichelleSmithPerformingArtsLibrarysGeneralandReferenceCollections,andinpartnershipwithSpecialCollectionsinthePerformingArts.WithaviewtowardminimalduplicationofMSPALcirculatingholdingsinthesameareas,IPAMsscorecollectionconcentratesprimarilyonantiquarian,outofprintworksandeditions.MSPALretainsalargegeneralcollectionofscoresandrecordingsoffrequentlyrequestedpianorelatedinterestwithafocusoncurrentandrecentpublications.

    Diversity:TheIPAMcollectionsincludematerialsandresourcesthatreflectavarietyofpolitical,economic,religious,social,minorityandsexualissuestotheextentthattheseissuesmayrelatetoourspecializedfieldandtheysupportintellectualfreedombyprovidingfreeaccesstoallexpressionsofideasthroughwhichanyandallsidesofaquestion,causeormovementmaybeexplored.

    II. SummaryofCollectionScopeatCurrentCollectingLevels

    IPAMwasestablishedatUMDin1978,whenthecollectionwasdonated.Itoriginallyexistedasanindependent,nonprofitorganizationfoundedin1965andbasedinNewYork.Asof2015ithousesapproximately27,000publishedscores,over17,000compactdiscs,nearly25,000vinylLPrecords,about11,000shellac78rpmdiscs,andnearly80separatecollectionsofpaperandprintdocumentsonthecareersofindividualconcertpianists.OriginallylocatedinHornbakeLibrary,since2000thesematerialshaveallbeenhousedintheMichelleSmithPerformingArtsLibrary.AmoredetaileddescriptionofthevariousIPAMcollections,andmuchadditionalinformation,maybeobtainedfromtheIPAMwebsite:www.lib.umd.edu/IPAM.

    3. Deselection/Withdrawal:TherelevanceofmaterialsintheIPAMcollectioncanandwillchangeovertime.Periodicweedingofthecollectionisdonetoidentifyitemswhichnolongerfitthecriteriaforinclusioninthecollection.

    4. Preservation:ThesubjectspecialistwillworkwiththePreservationunitattheUniversityofMarylandLibrarieswhenindividualtitlesarebroughttotheirattentionthatneedrebinding,repairorreplacement.

    ImplementationandRevisionSchedule:ThispolicyhasbeenreviewedbytheCollectionDevelopmentCouncil(libcdc@umd.edu)andisconsideredeffectiveonthedateindicatedbelow.Itwillbereexaminedregularlybythesubjectspecialistandwillberevisedasneededtoreflectnewcollectionneedsandtoidentifynewareasofstudy,aswellasthoseareasthatmaybeexcluded.
