She has served as an arts adminis- trator in central California, a Dean at the Minneapolis College of Arts and Design, and has owned and operated a gallery and arts supply shop in Wis- consin. She also taught art in a pri- vate school in Addis Ababa. Her most recent work emphasizes spirituality and environmental concerns in addi- tion to exploring the psychological aspect of her subjects. Her works have garnered a number of awards, and are held in private collections throughout California and the Mid- west. She draws from her work in counseling and management consult- ing, and explores similar topics in her writing. The author of seven books and several hundred articles, she is currently focused on expression through watercolor, most recently in large, intense pieces. Artist statement: I once heard a say- ing, “To be inspired means to be in spirit”. For me, being out among God’s great creation is the best inspi- ration. There, all of my senses be- come part of my painting, not just sight but touch and sound, all flowing together onto my canvas. “Light”, is probably what first inspires me to paint a certain scene, light vs. shad- ow, warm vs. cool; or lack of light, creating mood and atmosphere. I love my studio time as well. It is there that I can create larger paintings, carrying with me the memory of recent out- door experiences. It is there that I have the time to add my own style and nuances to a scene already light- ly captured ’en plein air.’ I remember well my very first studio. It was a doll house that my father converted for me as a child. There, out in the yard, I learned the pleasures of freeing my creative energies into something I could share with others. My work is most known for its impressionistic or “painterly” style, favoring serene, pic- torial landscapes. I prefer to suggest, rather than render, simplifying large shapes of color and value, leaving the details to the viewer. I feel this allows them o explore my paintings, the same way I so eagerly explored my surroundings. My goal is to convey my feelings through my heart and brush in hopes that the viewer will gain the same sense of spirit that in- spired me. Members who wish to enter our juried show and have photos taken of their entries please come to the gal- lery on Friday, July 31 from 11am- 4pm. President’s Message We have signed a contract with a

building contractor to develop the scope

of work and plans for us to meet the cur-

rent Americans with Disabilities Act re-

quirements and Stockton building codes

at the gallery and the Saigon Restaurant.

The next step will be to request bids from

three building contractors to do the work.

We will not start any work at the gallery

until October so that it will not interfere

with our 4th Fall Regional Open Juried

Show in September.

September will be a busy time at the

gallery. We will be displaying the accept-

ed work for our 4th Fall Regional Open

Juried Skhow from the 1st to the 26th. We

will be hosting a Chamber of Commerce

Mixer on Thursday, September 3. We will

have our show reception and awards

presentation on Saturday, September 12.

All members are encouraged to attend

the mixer and the juried show reception.

If you have not yet entered the juried

show, you have until August 21. The pro-

spectus is available at the gallery and on

our website, www.stocktonartleague.org.

If you have any questions about the juried

show please contact Maria Flumiani.

In the June President’s letter, I told

you that we had formed a planning com-

mittee and that we may be contacting you

for input. During August and September

the committee will be conducting one on

one interviews with about 50 of our active

artist members. The interviews will take

about one-half to one hour of your time.

Thank you in advance for your coopera-

tion.

Your President, Pat Price

The next Board of Directors meeting will be on Wednesday, Aug 5, 2015 at 10am. Members are welcome to attend all board meetings and to express opinions and offer ideas.
