The winter of 2010 brought several firsts to Colerain High School. It brought more snow than we have seen in 20 years. Even greatersuccesses to our already excellent performing arts programs and moreawards and achievements than we ever had in our winter athletics programs. And yet, these firsts really just build on the tradition ofexcellence that is the hallmark of Colerain High School. Here are some of the highlights of winter of 2010.

The 2009/2010 boysbasketball seasonwas a year of memorable accom-plishments. Pickedtowards the bottomof the GMC in theprediction the teamwas able to finishthird with a leaguerecord of 10-4. Also, the team was able tofinish the regular season with a 16-4 record which was the most wins in a season for aColerain team since the 1992-1993 campaign. The accomplishments inthe regular season was just the start of a team that will go down as one ofthe best in school history. During the State Tournament the team wasable to capture just the Third Sectional Championship in school history, and only the Second District Title in school history which allowed theteam to advance to the SWEET 16 (Regional Semi-Finalist).

The Lady Cardinals had finished another great season with the record of17 and 5 and a trip to the sectional finals. They were lead by their firstteam all Ohio and Xavier signee Ashley Wanninger. Miss Wanningerserved as both a captain a role model for her teammates on and off thecourt. She broke the Colerain High School career scoring record scoringover 1200 points in addition to numerous awards and accolades. Ashleyreceived the Division I Southwest All-District Player of the Year, SportsWoman of the Year, McDonald’s All American Nominee, LaRosa’sPlayer of the year, 1st Team All State, and nominated "City Player of theYear" just to list a few. She will be deeply missed not only for her scor-ing prowess, but because for the last four years she has been the heart ofthe Colerain Program. Girl’s Basketball is looking forward to anothersummer of growth and continued success in out program.

Congratulations to senior Lauren Weaver who made her fourth appear-ance at the State Swim Meet this past February. Lauren placed 3rd inthe 50 yd freestyle and 11th in the 100 yd freestyle. Lauren was theGMC Champ in the 50 free and the 100 fly. She was the sectionalchamp in the 50 free and the 100 free and the district champ in the 50free. Lauren will be competing at the college level for Duke University.

Congratulations to sophomore swimmer Chris Campbell who was thefirst boy in 12 yrs to qualify individually to the District meet at MiamiUniversity in February. He qualified in the 50 yd freestyle and is hopingto qualify for the state meet next year.

Wrestler Jake Hammer finished his junior season with a 31-12 recordand 21 pins. He became Colerains 23rd state qualifier this season whilefinshing at the top of his weight class in nearly ever tournament he com-

peted in throughout the year. Jake was a team captain thie season andhas one more year left to get on the podium at the state tournament.Jake has plans to wrestle in college after high school.

The winter guard and winter percussion had an incredible season. Both groups earned the Silver Medal at Championships andalso made finals at the Winter Guard International RegionalChampionships. This was the first time in the history of the schoolthat this was accomplished. The winter guard finished the yearranked 8th in the country and the winter percussion finished the sea-son ranked 4th in the country.

This year, the Colerain’s Show Cards competed at eight competitionsin the Midwest. For the first time in the history of the group, theShow Cards won more the two titles, taking home four GrandChampionships, two second place trophies and one third place alongwith various awards for vocals, soloists, choreography, band, crew andmany others. On March 1st Colerain High School Advanced Design Art stu-dents and art teacher Carrie Barnett with Cincinnati artist,Jahaziel Minor, embarked on an artist journey, one that wouldend with a Guernica sized peace mural (23’x11’). This peacemural illustrates both local and global images of peace. AnUnveiling Event was scheduled to share this universal message

with the people in our community on Friday, April 16th, at 7:00pm, at Borders bookstore near Northgate Mall. The ColerainThe mural concept is inspired by KIDS' GUERNICAInternational. KIDS' GUERNICA is a project for children indifferent places of the world to create peace paintings on hugecanvases the same size as Pablo Picasso's "Guernica", 1937(11’5" x 25’5"), which protested against the brutal bombing inthe town of Guernica during the Spanish War.

Students discussed personal and global images of peace andworked with Jahaziel Minor to create a composition they feltwould express their idea to a global audience. Work on theactual canvas began on March 1st (the beginning of nationalYouth Art Month) and was completed within a two week period. The mural was then sent to our seamstress (a volunteer parent)and then on to FASTSIGNS to prepare it for hanging. Part ofour participation in this project is to document the various stagesof the process, much the same was as Picasso did with his paint-ing. The photo documentation along with a photo of the finalmural will be submitted to KIDS' GUERNICA International atthe completion of our project. The beauty of this mural is that itwill be portable and we can display it throughout the communi-ty. If we are able to secure funds for shipping, we also have theoption of participating in International Exhibits that are sponsored by KIDS' GUERNICA International.
