Purpose

This Directory of Community Groups and Organisations in Coleman Ward has been undertaken through the Coleman Ward Community Meeting.

Its purpose is to foster community spirit in the Ward through providing information on the range of community groups and activities taking place in the local area.

This will help people who live in the Ward to find things to do and local groups to join, as well as to participate in community activities.

For the Coleman Ward councillors, Cllrs Deborah Sangster and Mian Mayat, the Directory gives them a flavour of all the things taking place in the Ward, as well as highlighting any gaps. It also provides them with a basis for the allocation of small funds from the Ward Community Budget, and a list of those who may wish to be involved in the future preparations of the Ward’s Community Plan.

This First Draft of the Directory was considered at the Coleman Ward Community Meeting on Tuesday 3 December at 106 East Park Road, Leicester. It was agreed to distribute the completed Directory to all households in the Ward.

Collating the Directory

The collation of the Directory is subject to several qualifications:

residents of the area may belong to many groups and organisations and those that are listed are only those that take place in Coleman Ward

it is recognised that most of the activities listed relate to women, children and the elderly – most of those who live their daily lives in the area. This is part of the nature of Coleman Ward and may be influenced by the availability of transport

most community activities take place in public places: halls, community, faith and cultural centres, schools, the library and swimming baths. Much of the information included has been taken from these sources

the first draft was sent to all groups/organisations listed in the directory and they were asked to check the information and confirm agreement to be included. Following responses, amendments were made but inevitably community groups and activities change and people move on.

It is anticipated that this Directory will encourage everyone living in the Ward to actively support their local activities and so build the community spirit of the area.
