Sticks and stones can make a home But you need a family to complete it.

I thought I would change up this old adage a bit. Bricks, mortar, and wood combined, make up a physical unit or structure (a house), and an earthquake or

natural disaster can easily change the appearance. The family unit is something that cannot be seen, but can be felt. It is build of love, trust, and respect. It iswhat transforms a house into a home, and no amount of Mother Nature can tear this apart. My parents, like most others, had a dream of owning their

own home. Their rst house soon became more than just a structure. It grew as we grew. It represented who we are as a family; housing all the memories of

our years together. When I look around our home, with each brick that was laid, or each change in the physical structure of the house, there is an associated

memory imprinted in my mind. If the walls could talk, they would have many stories to tell - of late night movies, secrets between brothers, play forts, wrestling,

and stories read to us by our parents. I recall the addition we added in anticipation of my sibling, an RV garage for those camping trips we would take, and a

backyard fence to enclose our bouncing beagles (my brother and I each had to have our own dog). Dont forget the deck and the tree house that my father

and I constructed with our bare hands when I was a toddler; barely large enough to swing a hammer. My mother memorialized these events in pictures which

serve as a record of these monumental events of the changes in our home, and the events that shaped me on my journey of life. These included re-constructionprojects - the kitchen remodel that was started when my brother was in 2nd grade, and to my mothers dismay, is still not yet complete; the bathroom remodel

so that we men could have our own space; the painting of the walls to spruce things up for company; and my favorite - the video game room so that we

could have our teenage friends over. I personally think it was a ruse so that my parents could keep a close eye on us, but we didnt mind. Sometimes it is nice

to have parents close by. The older I get, the more I realize the sacrices my parents have made, and continue to make for my brother and me. They have often

said The front door will always welcome you back, no matter how far you might stray. It is a comfort to have a place to drop your shoes, hang your hat, and

slump on the couch. It is nice to know you will always have someone to welcome you with a hug and kiss, a dogs wagging tail, and a place to call home.

It is easy to understand why the American dream includes owning ones own home. It is wonderful feeling to use ones hands to sculpt and create; and use ones

hearts to build memories. Everyone should be so lucky to have a house to make into a home. So when you ask, What makes a house a home? the simple

answer is family.
