A Tribute to Fallen Heroes

Prospect Hill Cemetery in York, Pa., is not just a local cemetery, it is a home of special remembrance for the nation. The list of patriots buried here begins with Philip Livingston, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and extends through Soldiers Circle, which is a federally owned site given to America after the Civil War as a final resting place for soldiers who died of their wounds after the Battle of Gettysburg. Now a new memorial was recently unveiled – a tribute to fallen heroes from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2010, the cemetery had a retirement ceremony for 4,400 flags representing the soldiers lost in Iraq and at that time made a promise that a permanent, dedicated memorial would be placed in the cemetery, according to Jack Sommer, president of Prospect Hill Cemetery. The memorial had to be respectful, which meant the use of granite, but also had to appeal to the personal nature of the losses. Sommer had noticed how the public had respond-ed to banners flown with photos of the newly fallen heroes.

“We decided to employ new technology and use a large digital display to show our fallen heroes,” said Sommer. “We wanted a memorial where families could share their loved ones with others and keep their memories alive.” He took this idea and created a new type of memorial that combined the dignity and pride of granite with the personal touch of digital photos.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial was created through partnering with a local digital sign company and with Coldspring, who they had partnered with on previous projects. Sommer and his staff created a mock-up of what they thought would be an appropriate memorial, took photos and sent them to Coldspring for their input.

“Coldspring took our ideas and transferred them into drawings,” said Sommer. “Ultimately, it was those drawings that the granite was fabricated from.” While working with the design, Coldspring created a solution to the design that incorporated a back panel and two side wings.

“It was challenging to get the side panels at the right angles, and they were able to make it work,” he said. “We clearly would not have been able to do this without the expertise of the staff at Coldspring.”

was kept very simple and straightforward so the eye could be directed to the faces of the fallen on the digital screen.

“The Mesabi Black is very dignified and presents very well,” said Sommer. They had used Mesabi Black on other applications and found it creates a very inspiring, moving memorial. Additionally, the cemetery felt it was important that the Fallen Heroes Memorial was fabricated with a domestic stone. Several well known memorials have been created with foreign quarried granite and Prospect Hill felt that veterans and their families would prefer the use of American quarried granite.

Prospect Hill Cemetery used the timeless, attractive look of polished Mesabi Black granite with the digital interface to create the first outdoor digital memorial ever – a one of a kind achievement. The national memorial is now attracting attention throughout the United States as families begin to send in photos of their fallen loved ones and travel to view the touching tribute.

We are excited to announce recent enhancements to the Personal Reflections Online Memorial Selection System. These improvements will provide increased flexibility with memorial design and an expanded offering of granite products.

Personal Reflections, originally introduced in 2011, is an online tool that consolidates memorial designs and ordering into a single, seamless process. Using an interactive selection process in a dynamic, web-based environment, the system displays full color photographic renderings of a personalized memorial, with the options chosen by the family member.

With the release of Personal Reflections 2.0 on Feb. 18, the program now provides increased design flexibility including the ability to move and resize text as well as emblems and to add verses and emblems beyond the standard template. The system also provides the ability to add panels and lettering to the back of granite memorials. The next enhancement, tentatively scheduled for June, will introduce an expanded offering of granite products, allowing you to start from a basic template, through choosing alternate finish options. This release will also provide increased control over sizes for all product lines.

“We are thrilled with the recent enhancements that have been made to Coldspring’s Personal Reflections system,” said DJ Hamm, Family Service Advisor with Arlington Memorial Gardens, a full-service, 165 acre cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. “The program is much easier to use. The accessibility to emblems and the ability to revise a section without starting over are definite improvements that save time for our staff and more importantly, our customers.”
