A FORCE FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM. The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) was established during the outbreak of the First World War. A wave of patriotism swept across Canada, and thousands enlisted in what they believed would be a short-lived conflict.

Within two months, 33,000 volunteers were already in training—more than the initial 25,000 the government had hoped for. But the war would demand an even greater commitment, and over the course of the four-year conflict, more than 650,000 Canadians would enlist. Of them, 424,000 served overseas as part of the CEF.

From Ypres (1915) and the Somme (1916), to Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele (1917), Canadians distinguished themselves as tough, resourceful and effective fighters. Today, the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and The Royal 22e Regiment (The Van Doos) are just two of several enduring regiments that preserve the proud legacy of valour the CEF established during the First World War.

D-DAY DEDICATION.Seventy years ago on June 6th, a pivotal campaign to change the course of the Second World War played out on the beaches of Normandy.

After four years of occupation, Western Allies launched a cross-Channel invasion to seize a foothold in France and fight their way north to Germany.

Securing a beachhead was the critical first step, and although the assault was carried out from sea and sky, it is the scene of soldiers pouring out of Landing Craft Assault (LCA) vehicles that has become the iconic image of D-Day.

This coin’s unique engraving delivers a powerful perspective on the angst and anticipation soldiers must have felt as they approached Juno beach. More than 14,000 Canadians participated in the campaign, with more than 5,000 making the ultimate sacrifice.

BE FOREVER TRANSFORMED.You’ll never see caterpillars or butterflies in the same way with this coin. It highlights the amazing chrysalis that a caterpillar builds to change into a butterfly—and it does so using its own body as construction materials!

It begins by spinning a silk pad on the underside of a milkweed leaf and attaching its hind claspers to it. Then, the caterpillar hangs upside down and slowly sheds its skin to reveal a moist exoskeleton that hardens into the chrysalis. During nine to 15 days, the chrysalis’s waxy, green colour becomes transparent and continues to darken as the pupa develops inside. Once the butterfly is ready, the shedding process begins anew as it pushes down and outwards to split the chrysalis and set itself free.

This coin’s yellow, black and white caterpillar is a monarch, arguably the best-known butterfly and the perfect representative to showcase the architectural wonder of the chrysalis!

SPELLBOUND BY THE SEAHORSE.The seahorse is one of the most fascinating creatures in the sea, and the province of Nova Scotia is fortunate to have one species of this extraordinary fish living along its coastline. It’s the lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus), and its unique characteristics go far beyond its horse-like head.

The seahorse’s eyes are reminiscent of a chameleon’s and can also swivel about independently. Fish scales have been replaced by a bony armour that covers the seahorse’s body in a series of rings, and the small dorsal fin, used for small amounts of propulsion, makes it easy to envision why this fish is not a good swimmer and needs a strong, monkey-like tail to pull itself around in the seaweed or coral. And, it’s the father who does the hatching—up to 700 eggs in his brood pouch—and he’ll only let his “fry” go when they know how to swim.

FROM CONFERENCE TO CONFEDERATION. The history of North America is one of epic struggle as European nations fought for control. Long after the American Revolution and the War of 1812, the threat of American invasion remained ever-present.

In September 1864, representatives from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and the Province of Canada (Ontario and Quebec) met in Charlottetown, PEI, to discuss a maritime union, but the meeting took on a new dimension when Sir John A. Macdonald proposed the idea of uniting all colonies from east to west.

A second meeting was held the following month in Québec City, and it produced the landmark document that laid the basis for the British North America Act, which ultimately led to Confederation in 1867.

While many years would pass before the final province and territory joined Confederation, the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences were the critical catalysts that propelled the vision for “Canada” forward.

THE MOST EXPLOSIVE BATTLE ON CANADIAN SOIL.The War of 1812 was a turning point for Canada (British North America) by uniting French- and English-speaking inhabitants, Aboriginal communities, farmers, soldiers, artisans and others against an American invasion.

After two years of warring, the Americans renewed their attempt to invade Upper Canada by crossing the Niagara River. With the first two battles won, they thought they would defeat the British, but their campaign came to an abrupt end at Lundy’s Lane, just two kilometres from Ontario’s Niagara Falls on July 25, 1814.

The fighting began shortly before 7 pm with fierce hand-to-hand combat or close-range bayonets and muskets. By midnight, both sides were exhausted and all the generals were wounded. The Americans retreated, leaving behind all the artillery they had captured, and the British were too tired to pursue. Nearly 1,800 men were killed, wounded or missing, but America would never invade Upper Canada again.
