META-COGNITION…thinking about thinking! We all think, plan, organise, reflect, learn, question and respond in different
ways. Meta-cognition is about providing your child(ren) with the strategies,
time and opportunities to improve their understanding about themselves.
We use all sorts of ways in school to promote this area, in order that your
child(ren) can then improve and accelerate their learning.
So, what can you do to help your child(ren)?
Provide a plan for the day – they can then prepare themselves for the bits
they might find the hardest.
Talk a lot (particularly before doing).
Before a task – ask them to think about what they will need, how they will
complete the task, and how will they know if they have been successful.
During a task – ask them to think about how well it’s going, and whether
they need to change anything in order to complete it successfully.
After a task – ask them to evaluate how well they have done and whether
they would change anything next time.
Model how you think and organise things.
Externalise your thought process, so they can hear the way you think
about a given situation, problem or learning.
For other strategies or information, please speak with your child’s class
teacher.
Headlice…what’s the solution? One parent has suggested that all parents, school wide, should check their
child’s hair twice a week (midweek and at the weekend), and that if
children are found to be infected that they must be treated before
returning to school.
Please visit our school website for information on treating your
child/children. This can be accessed in different languages.

This week in the Panda class, we came in from the big playground and couldn’t believe our eyes! We found lots of strange shapes covered in flour all over our classroom. When the children investigated further, we could see that the shapes were gingerbread men! We decided to follow the footprints and they led us out of our classroom and into the Olympic suite. There we found all of our ingredients that had been stolen and a message. The message was from the Gingerbread man. He said he was sorry for taking our ingredients but he was trying to make himself a gingerbread family as he was feeling lonely. He asked would we be able to help him as it was too tricky baking by himself. The children agreed that they would help him. The children have loved making Gingerbread biscuits for the Gingerbread man, and soon we will send them to him ... if he ever lets us know were he lives!
Each week, we will focus on work undertaken by a different class. This week it is the turn of Reception…
