COGN 21: iMovie 4 Guide Sheets for Image Editing,Transitions, Titles and Finishing
1. Begin by logging into Mac OSX with your ACS login.2. Find COGN 21 imovie folder on hard drive3. Select File / Copy. Click and hold on new version once copy is made and save as
your initials _COGN21.4. Double click on imovie icon in folder: This launches imovie without changing
the original file which will be used by the next group.
In the future, you will launch iMovie from this icon: Once launched, you must save your session immediately. Saving to the correct locationis the most important step. Do this by Clicking on “File” and drag down to New Project(or press Apple N).
3. Then Save in the correct location byfinding the GEMM folder and then nameyour project in this way“GEMMyournamesPjt1”

To Capture Footage and begin editing
Your window should look like this:
Move this switch to camera so that you can capture anddigitize images and sounds.
Step One:
Step Two: With the camera in VCR mode, press play on the camera.When you are near the video you want to capture in imovie
click on
Step Three: Once the clip reaches the end point you desire, click on
again. Now clip appears in the bin.

Step Four:Name your clipsby clicking andholding on Clip 01in the bin. Typenew nameIf you double click- Clip Info windowopens and canrename clip – hit
Then press Set.
Continue digitizing – Move the switch to camera before capturing the next clip
Play the tape from the DV Camcorder and Press when clip is cued:
Name your clips immediately after you digitize them one by one by double clicking on clipin bin.
Most importantly, SAVE YOUR SESSIONOFTEN!!!! Press Apple S or go to File /Save Project.

Now that you have a bin full of clips, the next steps are:• Bring clips into the timeline• Trim and tighten, rearrange• Create transitions• Build titles and• Finish your project.
TIP: Know the general order of clips before you begin!
Switch the view of iMovie to Clip Viewer button (normally it is in the clock or TimelineViewer mode)
Bring Clips into Timeline – Two Methods:
Method One:• Click on clip and drag clip from Bin to Timeline• Benefit: Easy as pie!• Drawback: Leaves you without a reference clip in the bin and all changes must be
made in timeline.
Method Two:• Click on clip in Bin• Press Apple C to copy• Click in Timeline• Press Apple V to paste• Benefits: a copy remains in the Bin
Play rough cut by clicking in timeline and pressing space bar or Play button. Make noteson changes that should be made.
SAVE!!! (Apple S)

Trimming Clips – Three Methods:
Method One:• Move to Timeline mode by switch this button to clock:
• Position cursor at borders of clips so that you see a line with arrows. Move cursorforward or back to extend or shorten a clip.
Method Two:• Play clip until you come to a place where you want to cut.• Press Command T• Splits the clip at the cursor position• Click on the side of the newly split clip that you no longer want
Method Three:Click on clip you wish to trim in Timeline so that it shows up in Viewer
In Viewer move cursor sothat little arrows appear.
Move these arrows so thatyou get a yellow areawhich represents that youwish to keep.
Click on blue areas andpress delete.
These unwanted bits will beremoved from clip intimeline but will remain inthe reference clip in the binand saved elsewhere. Ifyou wish to re-extend clip,do so using cursor method.

Adding Black space:
In Timeline Mode Click on a clip and dragright to create a space.
Switch to Clip Mode:
Black space will appear as a clip:You can click on the black clip and choose adifferent color or duration.
Adding Transitions:Have timeline in Clip mode• Click on Trans Button• Select the transition you want to place
between two clips.• Adjust the speed which makes the transition
take up more or less time• Drag transition to timeline between 2 clips
• Change speed and click update in Trans paneto make changes in timeline to this transition.

Creating Titles:
• Click on the Titles Button
• Select a Title from the List
• Centered Title is most basic
• Insert text for title here
• Choose Color, Size, Speed
• Select Preview to test Title
• Drag title to Timeline. If you selected OverBlack, everything will move down thetimeline.
• If Over Black is NOT selected, title will goover clip you drag it to.
Finishing your film!
Once everything is as you wish record to tape in two easy steps:
1. Select File / Share 2. In Share Window, Select Video Camera
Choose to addblack before andafter project.
Click on shareand computerwill controlcamera fromhere.

FIXING MISTAKES:
1. You moved a clip from bin to timeline and made changes to the length. Now youwant the original back!
Select clip in timeline and right click, thenchoose Restore Clip
OR
Select Clip and choose Advanced /Restore Clip
2. When finishing film you realize that you have a lot of black space you did not wantor need. Where is the black space and how to get rid of it easily?
Move to Clip mode (film icon) and black spaceshows up as same size (even though it has differentduration) as clip.
Select black clip and delete. Everything moves overnow.
HELPFUL TIPS:1. Never empty trash in the middle of a project2. Save often.3. Open imovie folder in your drive or in your storage area – make sure you see clips
in the media folder.4. Back up your work by sharing file as a Quicktime file and saving to your storage
area. File / Share
From pull down menuchoose Email or Web
Select Share and thenindicate place to savequicktime file to (yourworkspace / drive)
