Europe is home of leading cogeneration

manufacturers

6

Cogeneration in the European Economy:

• Employs 100,000 citizens in the EU

• Approximately 30 billion Euro turnover

• Supplies around ~12% of electricity and ~15%

of heat

Where will our heat come from in the future?

Cogeneration

Facility

Its only lost if you cannot use it

STRONG FOCUS TODAY ON

ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION

Wind Turbines

Photo voltaic

Nuclear

BUT WHAT ABOUT HEAT?

WILL WE USE ELECTRICITY FOR ALL

HEAT IN THE FUTURE?

PROBABLY NOT WE WILL STILL

DEPEND ALSO ON BURNING FUELS

Generator Set For Fenice, Scarlino, Italy

Combined Heat and Power - Chemical Industry

Project Summary

Project / Country Fenice Scarlino, Italy

Customer EDF Fenice (EndUser: Huntsman Tioxide Plant)

Application Combined Heat and Power

Technology 1 x SGT-400 gas turbine packaged by Centrax

Electricity generated: 12.9 MW

Start 2013

Complete 2015

Challenge

• Continues operation at Huntsman‘s pigment manufacturing

facility in Scarlino

Solution • Siemens SGT-400 gas turbine to provide up to 12,9 MW of

electricity plus 24 tonnes of supperheated steam from the

turbine exhaust through a Heat Recovery Steam Generator for

the manufacturing process

• Most of the electricity generatied by CHP is consumed by the

Huntsman‘s Scarlino facility with any additional power being

exported to the local electricity grid

• Turbine intake air cooler to increase power output and efficency

in hot weather

Benefits

• Security of electrical supply to the Scarlino facility

• High efficiency reducing plant energy costs

• Reduced global green house gas emissions

Tri-Generation plant Fuel Flexibility with Low

Emissions in CoGen Riverbay, New York

Project Summary

Project / Country Bronx, New York, USA

Customer Riverbay Coorporation

Application Combined Cycle Cogeneration

Technology 2 x SGT-400 gas turbine, 1 x SST-300 with, Heat Recovery Steam

Generator (HRSG) and SPPA-3000

Start 2007

Complete 2008

Challenge

• Very short installation and commissioning time

• Reliable power supply for Co-op city for 60,000 residents for

heating, cooling and electricity

Solution • Tri-generation of heat and cooling 13.6 to 226 tonnes/hr steam

at 11bar, 9t/h chilled water and power 40 MW(e) (14 – 23 MW

own use in Co-op City, up to 16 MW export to local grid)

• Dual fuel burning capability of SGT-400

Benefits

• Customers savings ~$16 million Payback time 3 – 4 years

• High overall efficiency of >77 %

• Low emissions NOx < 10 Vppmd

• Tri-generation (heating, cooling and electrical power)

“Hurricane Sandy hit Co-op City about as hard as it hit

most anywhere else in New York City, but everybody in

Co-op City had power before, during and after the

storm.” said Freedman

Concluding remarks

Page 14: COGEN Europe - European Energy Forum Robin... · 27/10/2015 · COGEN Europe Changing the way ... power compensation by renewables Higher sensitivity to load changes due to reduced

cogeneurope.eu

Some recommendations for the Heating

and Cooling strategy

14

The Strategy should take a System not a Silo

approach

Success must be measured against primary energy

metric

Decarbonisation of energy in industry shall get a

special attention

Cogeneration principle should be highlighted
