Colorado ESGR Annual Employer Awards Banquet
The Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Colorado Committee for Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR) hosted its annual awards banquet on May 30th at the Hyatt RegeTech Center, 7800 E. Tufts Ave, Denver, Colorado, 80237.
It means a lot to us to recognize and honor those employers who support our m embers of National Guard and Reserve, said Chairman Dick Young, Colorado Committee for the ESGR.
In Colorado, we have some 13,400 of our neighbors, friends, family members, and our fellow workwho serve our country, truly the twice the citizen as praised by Winston Churchill. But they could serve our country without the ongoing support of their employers throughout the state. In a very sense, these employers and their coworkers also serve.
Our notable guest speakers spoke about the importance of employers and their outstanding supporGuard and Reserve members and their families as they commit to serving their country.
Ron Young recognized the Colorado Committee for ESGR for its tremendous efforts via 15,volunteer hours in support of Guard and Reserve members and its work with Colorado employers. also addressed the importance of Guard and Reserve members as valued employees and the needreduce the unemployment rate.
General Edwards said We cant do the job without the support of our employers afamilies ..Our nation counts on our Guard and Reserve more than it ever has. He spoke abthe 7,000 Colorado Guards efforts with Colorado flooding and wildfires and the deployment of Guunits to Afghanistan.
Bill Ritter, Jr. recalled relationships he developed with Reserve Component members, families, employers whether it was with humanitarian efforts or his many trips to Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iand his interactions with Colorado Guard and Reserve members.

Mil i tary ski l ls, civi l ian success , mutu al respect, Xcel Energy
pledges ful l support o f Nat ional Guard and Reserve
When Guardsman Eric Graff goes from Ammunition Section Chief in the Kingdom of Jordan to GFitter Apprentice at his stateside job with gas and electric utility Xcel Energy in Colorado, he doesget very much time to transition. Lucky for Eric, his company supports both roles and the skill set ttranslates between them. It means a lot to work for a company that supports us, says GMany of the soldiers who work for me get hassled. At times I personally have to call th
manager to get them released for duty.
Graff and other active military membwere recognized at a ceremony on M14, 2014 by chairman, president CEO of Xcel Energy, Ben Fowke, wsigned a national statement backing Employer Support of the Guard Reserve. Mike Deselich, Deputy Commander for the Mission Support Group in the Air Force Reserve, wworks as a Compensation Business Partner in the Human Resources Department of Xcel Enecalls the companys commitment to its Guard and Reservists refreshing.Other organizations are accommodating because they have to be, but Xcel Energy provisupp ort because they want to make a di fference by going above and beyond any manda
requirements, says Deselich. One example of that is that Xcel Energy maintains the employebase pay when they are called to active duty, reducing their financial burden.I am thankful for the stance Mr. Fowke has taken to support current Reserve and Guemployees without the grief I have heard from others, says Deselich.
Xcel Energy not only complies with all requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment Reemployment Rights Act, as well as all state laws, but the company is also well known for its milit
hiring practices. It has earned recognition from G.I. Jobs as a Military Friendly Employer for the six years, from Military Times as Best for Vets and named one of the Most Valuable Employers Military by CivilianJobs.com, to name a few.
During his initial job search, Deselich used a web site with a military affiliation.
Xcel Energy was prominently listed on this site and its where I found my current job.It habeen great to run into many other former/current military members within the company.
The company also hosts an affinity group called Military Ombudsmen for Veterans and Employees. These employees focus on the development, implementation and communication of programs andpolicies centered on the welfare of veterans and their families.

Military skills, civilian success, mutual respect Xcel Energy pledgesfull support of National Guard and Reserve (contd)
In 2013, CEO Fowke testified before the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee about ways utility plans to bolster its already strong military hiring practices. Our industry faces a significant need for new, qualified employees as over half of workforce is eligible to retire over the next 10 years, says Fowke. It only makes sense forto enhance our abi l ity to ident i fy , at t ract and hire from this po ol of qual if ied, ski
candidates.Angela Steiner is one of them. Shes been with Xcel Energy for 16 years and has served in the Guas a Chemical Specialist and Human Resource Specialist for seven years. Its great to work for a company that supports the military, says Steiner. Sometimes I with peop le in my un i t abou t Xcel Energy, especially wh en I know of job po st ings th at
available just in case theyre looking for a great place to work that affords them this importbalance.
Graff couldnt agree more. A family man trying to balance work, Guard duty and traveling betwemultiple countries, he says the support is critical to his mental state of mind.Knowing I have that support when I leave for Guard duty and that I have a job when I coback keeps me loyal to both of my employers, Graff says. Its the best of both worlds anhope other companies follow this lead.

The Sixth MVEE Hono rs Those Who Served b y Hir ing HundredWe hire to honor their service and because it makes good busisense, stated the keynote speaker of the Military and Veterans EmployExpo (MVEE), Katherine Archuleta, Director of the Office of PersoManagement (OPM). The MVEE was held in Colorado Springs on Ma2014, and was co-hosted by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) andCarson, who collaborated with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reand other local partners to sponsor this free opportunity for over
active-duty Military service members, Colorado National G
members, Reservists, Veterans and their spouse attendees. They (Veterans) bring incredible skill levels to the workforce, good business to h ire Veterans as they are tra ined and have sac
so much for their country.
Two hundred employers offering 3830 Colorado jobs and over 167,000worldwide attended, including 20 federal agencies such as VA, Service and the Forest Service, and 30 resource tables. Archuleta saidthere are now more Veterans working in the federal government -30% federal employees have served - and OPM is focusing on hiring Veteespecially Women Veterans. Fort Carson leadership and attending Vet
spoke with the Director biggest employer in the federal government about making it easier, faster and accessible to apply for federal jobs. The White House and the heads of OPM, VA and the U.S. DepartmeLabor (DOL), have all worked together to launch VAs Online Veterans Employment Center on VAs website whouses a one stop shop to search for jobs, post resumes and access a military skills translator, which Archsaid should be helpful for those who have served now looking for work.
At least 647 job offers were made with most employers reporting. At the same time of the MVEE showcliterally hundreds of thousands of jobs, was a virtual job fair with 165 employers. This expo was excbecause it is easy to get around to the employers at the Freedom Financial Services Expo Center, qBarbara Martinez, Outreach Specialist from VA. The Veterans were more prepared, the MVEE was organized, and more real jobs were being offered, compared to other job fairs, according to Emplointerviewed. Jennie Lacey from DaVita, a 2013 Freedom Award Winner, agreed, stated it was very nice to such a large event honoring military. Glenda Willis, Corporate Recruiter for Graebel said she was able to newith other employers and resources as well to help Veterans find jobs suited for them. Graebel, a trucking
transportation company, came because Fort Carson has a transportation and logistics unit so Veteranalready trained for Graebel jobs.
Javier Sanchez, Army E-5, said he has started transition career training as he is getting out in October Attending all classes offered on May 13-15 at Pikes Peak Community College, Sanchez is learning hotranslate his military experience 91M Armored Bradley Systems Maintenance which is maintenance mechaelectronics in civilian speak. The DOL courses were also very helpful on civilian lingo and mannerism. I just to get my leg in somewhere and am flexible on job location. It is nerve racking and I am losing a sleep over finding a job, but plan on using Post 9-11 Education Benefits while working and getting with advancement.
Sanchez, and the other 1032 that attended this event, is why the MVEE has been held six times, seover 6500 Veterans, service members and their spouses. Interviews with previous attendees employers have shown that the MVEE template with career courses held before the Employer Daycarefully selected employers who all have jobs to offer, is more successful than just a job fair and resin more jobs for those who have served our country.

United Airlines settles suit brought by pilots called up for military serv
A trio of Spokane attorneys claimed victory Tuesday (May 20, 2014) in a $6.15million settlemof a class-action lawsuit alleging United Airlines didnt properly compensate pilots called military service.
The agreement is one of the largest recorded civil settlements of a caseunder a federal law that requires employers to honor promotions, raises and
other benefits military veterans would have otherwise received had they notbeen called into service. The Uniformed Services Employment andReemployment Rights Act has become a specialty for Spokane-basedattorneys Thomas Jarrard and Matthew Crotty, two military veterans whowere joined in the United Airlines case by Robert W. Mitchell, a MarineCorps veteran and fellow Spokane attorney.
The money paid by the Chicago-based airline will go into an account thatwill be disbursed to the estimated 1,160 United pilots who also servedoverseas between 2000 and 2010 and received less money in their pension accounts than therequires, defense attorneys alleged. The lawsuit was originally brought by James D. Tuten, an 18
pilot with United who lives in Colorado. Tuten served three tours with the U.S. Air Force duringperiod, leaving United in 2006, 2009 and 2010, according to the lawsuit.
During those periods of leave, contributions were made per company policy to Tutens retireaccount based on the minimum number of monthly flight hours required under Uniteds contract witpilots. The Spokane attorneys argued that Tuten and other veterans should have received mocontributions totaling the average of their previous 12 payments prior to deploying.
Crotty said Tuesday the success of the case hinged upon Tutens courage to stand up to his employcourt. Tuten is still a pilot with United.
But for Dannys leadership, this settlement wouldnt have happened, Crotty said.
Jarrard and Crotty have brought a similar lawsuit against the Washington State Patrol, allegingagency failed to provide military service boosts to civil service exam scores used in promotions. SeWSP troopers, including Charles Arnold, of Spokane, are named plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which caffect up to 10 percent of the agencysworkforce.
Jarrard said he was initially alerted to the pension issue at United by pilots who would call and saairline could not or would not provide calculations for their pension payments, which were farduring deployments than at other times. After Tuten agreed to file the lawsuit, Jarrard and his colleagbegan to look into how many United pilots had claims against the company.
It affected every pilot who went on long-term military leave, Jarrard said.
Those pilots will be able to opt in to the settlement and receive the pension pay calculated insettlement agreement. Attorneys in the case will receive about $1.75million for their services, withrest of the money going into the pot for veteran pilots.
Im very confident that every pilot is going to get their due compensation, Jarrard said.
