Do you have a stash of greeting cards you've received - Xmas, birthday, or whatever occasion—that you really don't want to keep any more? The recycling bin is certainly a greener option that disposing of them with your household waste, but they can also be reused.

Even though around half a billion email greeting cards are sent each year globally, paper based cards are still very popular.

Some people love to hang onto cards they receive as they become a part of family history, others are quite happy to let them go soon after the event.

While unwanted greeting cards can be put in your recycling bin; there are also organizations that can make use of them. These groups are practising the second of the 3 "green" R's - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

For example, check with your local childcare centre or primary school as they may be able to reuse the card fronts as craft materials.

“The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago... had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands.” ~ Havelock Ellis, The Dance of Life, 1923

Quote of the Day

“Try to leave the Earth a better place than when you arrived.” ~ Sidney Sheldon

Thought for the Day

Ball & Bat

With his ball and bat in hand Little Pete walked to home plate in an empty baseball field.

As he threw the ball up in the air, he announced, “I am the best ball player ever!”

He swung with all his power, but missed. He did the same thing and missed again.

He picked up the ball, tossed it up one more time, said “I am the best ball player in the world!”

Then he swung and missed again. “Wow! He said. “What a pitcher!”

Being Specific

Two buddies are fishing, but they haven’t caught anything all day. Then, another fisherman walks by with a huge load of fish. They ask him "excuse me, but where did you get all those fish?"

The other fisherman replies,” If you just go down the stream until the water isn't salty, there are a ton of hungry fish."

They thank him and go on their way. 15 minutes later, one fisherman says to the other "fill the bucket up with water and see if the water is salty."

He dips the bucket in the stream and drinks some. "Nope. Still salty." 30 minutes later, he asks him to check again.

"Nope, still salty." One our later they check again. "Nope. Still salty." "This isn't good," the fisherman finally says. "We have been walking for almost two hours and the water is still salty!"

"I know," says the other. "And the bucket is almost empty!"

Sudoku Solutions Crossword Solutions

How do I do it?

The object is to insert the numbers in the boxes to satisfy only one condition: each row, column and group of squares enclosed by the bold lines must contain the digits 1 through 9 exactly once.

The rules for different size and shape puzzles are pretty much identical. The different size puzzles simply require a different set of numbers.

Brainteaser Answer

Place 1 white marble in one bowl, and place the rest of the marbles in the other bowl (49 whites, and 50 blacks). This way you begin with a 50/50 chance of choosing the bowl with just one white marble, therefore life! BUT even if you choose the other bowl, you still have ALMOST a 50/50 chance at picking one of the 49 white marbles.

Sudoku Station

The Emperor’s Proposition

You are a prisoner sentenced to death. The Emperor offers you a chance to live by playing a simple game.

He gives you 50 black marbles, 50 white marbles and 2 empty bowls. He then says, “Divide these 100 marbles into these 2 bowls. You can divide them any way you like as long as you use all the marbles. Then I will blindfold you and mix the bowls around. You then can choose one bowl and remove ONE marble. If the marble is WHITE you will live, but if the marble is BLACK...you will die.”

How do you divide the marbles up so that you have the greatest probability of choosing a WHITE marble?

Trish has been running a monthly surf club for the kids and we recently celebrated International Surfing Day with an early morning surf competition. Massive thanks to: Trish for organising; Dave, Russ and Gav for their sharing their expertise; Cara and Tony for scoring everyone's moves; Mak Denzel for photography; and to everyone else who participated and supported on the day.
