Culpeper Literacy Council NewsBy Diana Tobias

Culpeper Literacy Council hosted a Chamber ofCommerce Mixer on the 18th of October.

What a great night it was, with a wonderful turnout ofattendees! The halls, classroom and tutor rooms werepacked with Chamber Members…lots of laughing, talking,and networking going on. A huge thank you to Chamber,Staff and Board for planning of this successful event. TheStaff and Board Members of the CLC explained how muchour services are needed in the community and surround-ing areas, and how we are moving toward the future, usingtechnology and distance learning.

What is the Culpeper Literacy Council and what kind oforganization is it? As we approach our 20th year of opera-tion, the CLC, continues as a non-profit 501 c (3) organiza-tion. The purpose of the CLC is to promote, coordinate,and facilitate planning and development of literacy ser-vices. As we serve Culpeper and the surrounding commu-nities, here are some of the FREE services that we provide:We help Adults 18 years or older to improve their basic lit-eracy skills, provide one-on-one tutoring for those whowish to learn how to read, obtain a GED or learn English.The CLC has GED, English, and EL Civics Classes as well.

CHAMBER DAY AT THE CAPITOL AND OLD DOMINION ASSEMBLY

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

“There is no better lobbyist than a voter from back home.”

Members of the Virginia Chamber and local Chambers of Commerce areinvited to spend January 23, 2008 at the State Capitol to raise the visibili-ty of the Virginia business community and reinforce our lobbying goals.

Participants will wear lapel stickers announcing their participation in“Chamber Day at the Capitol” as they make their visits to legislators,attend committee meetings and floor sessions, participate in briefings onbusiness issues and attend the “Old Dominion Assembly.”

Each local chamber is encouraged to bring a delegation of volunteer mem-bers and should make prior arrangements with their state legislators for thefollowing:

To arrange private meetings in their offices to discuss issues (talking points will be provided);

To be recognized during the floor sessions; and

To invite them to the "Old Dominion Assembly" at the Omni Richmond Hotel that evening.

The Culpeper County Chamber ofCommerce invites you to join in acountywide Legislative Conferenceand Breakfast. The purpose of themeeting will be to allow representa-tives from organizations, agenciesand businesses to present positions tostate legislators prior to the Januarylegislative session. Delegate Ed Scottand Senator Edd Houck will partici-pate in the conference.

The Legislative Conference andBreakfast is scheduled for Friday,December 7, 2007 at the Country Clubof Culpeper. Breakfast will be servedat 7:00 A.M. and the program willbegin at 7:30 A.M. The fee for thebreakfast will be $15 per person.

Each organization will be allowedto have one representative make a 2-5minute presentation. An effort shouldbe made to direct comments to issuesappropriate for the General Assembly.A copy of the presentation will be dueto the Chamber office by Friday,November 30, 2007, so that copies canbe forwarded to the legislators.

Dominion Construction Group has announced thatthey have been selected by Clea Investments asgeneral contractor for a project to refurbish buildingsat the end of West Main Street in Warrenton.

Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commissionrecently hired two new Regional II Planners; HarrietParcells, former Executive Director of the AmericanPassenger Rail Coalition, and Matthew Criblez, long-time planner and current Regional EnvironmentalManager with the Virginia Department ofConservation and Recreation.
