Canadian Open We would like to congratulate our Central Ontario Men’s Team on their Silver Medal finish at the Canadian Open 5 pin Bowling Championships, that took place this past June in Gatineau, Quebec. The men battled to a 4th place finish in the round robin, which included an exciting final game, a 5-3 loss to Northern Ontario, that ended 1497 to 1489. The first game of the stepladder finals was against Saskatchewan, a 6-2 win, highlighted by a 369 game by DJ Villeneuve. That moved them to the semi final match, a rematch with Northern Ontario. This match ended in a 6-2 victory, another close, high scoring match, 1341 to 1332, with a 381 game from Bobby Torraville leading the way. That advanced our men to the final against British Columbia. To win gold, the men’s team would have to defeat BC twice. The first game could not have been any closer, ending in a 4.5 to 3.5 victory for Ontario, a tie in totals at 1303, requiring a 2nd game. After a tight battle through most of the match, BC pulled away late and secured a 5-3 victory 1292 to 1213. We would like to congratulate the Central Men on earning a Canadian Open silver medal!! 1 COBA FASTLANE October, 2018 Central Ontario Men’s Team (Back Row L-R) Bobby Torraville, Wade Thompson, Dave Biscardi, Jim Head (Front Row L-R) Ian Gawel, Coach Brinley Hole, DJ Villeneuve

President’s message

As summer comes to an end, that means the start of school and the new bowling season! Welcome back everyone and I hope your summer was a safe and happy one. We are looking forward to an exciting new year of 5 pin bowling.

We had another season to be proud of last year.

2017 saw the launch of our charity golf event in support of Special Olympics Canada. The golfing was held at

Royal Ontario Golf and Country Club in Milton. Our fundraising chair, Ian Gawel, and the rest of his committee put on a great tournament and raised over $3,300.00. The 2018 version, held on July 29th, was equally successful, and the final numbers will be close to the same amount. A very big thank you to everyone who sponsored and supported for this great cause.

On the lanes, Karen Rybka from the Tuesday night league at Streetsville Bowl was crowned Provincial Champion at the Executives tournament, taking home the $1K first place prize. At the Youth Challenge, our boys team of Aaron Glover, Hunter Cameron, Kyle Doucette, Joshua Aubin, Ryan Houliston, and coach Dee Dee Haynes-Ridley were Provincial Champions. They, along with our Mixed Team (who finished fourth), went on to compete at the Ontario Winter Games in Orillia. And in the High Low Doubles, Maria Istvanic and Candace Laycox from Skyview Lanes finished 3rd and won prizes and a trip to the Dominican.

At the Open Championships, our Mens’ team defended their Provincial title, not an easy feat. The team was comprised of Dave Biscardi, Bobby Torraville, Dj Villeneuve, Ian Gawel, Jim Head, and Wade Thompson, along with

coach Brinley Hole. Once again, they battled fiercely at the National Championships in Gatineau and came away with a silver medal.

Congratulations to the York Simcoe 5 Pin Bowlers' Association for their victory as Zone of the Year. Although we did not win, the effort of our board was exemplary, and we should be proud of our accomplishments nonetheless. Congratulations to Mickey McNeil for Publicity Director of the Year, and Melissa Llewellyn for winning Coaching Coordinator of the Year. High fives to Lyall Gordon, Kevin Jepson and Brenda Hamilton who were finalists in their respective categories.

We are running a contest to come up with a new logo design for our zone. Our existing logo has been in place for more than 50 years, and it is time for a fresher, more modern look. If you would like to submit a new design, send it to [email protected] before October 31st. The winning design will win a jacket with the new logo on it.

Membership costs remain unchanged again this year. Central Ontario, through its fundraising efforts, subsidizes the membership cost for this zone. As a result, regular membership is only $8, and a tournament card (with participation in High Low Doubles, Holiday Classic and Provincial Triples) stays at $38.

We must thank all of the bowling proprietors in our zone for their continued support, and we look forward to working with them for our mutual success. You can visit http://www.coba5pin.ca/coba-leagues.html to get more information for our member centers.

We always welcome new ideas and helping hands, so if you would like to volunteer some time and help our organization, please reach out to any member of our board of directors.
