A method of removing cyanide ion from wastewater comprising pro- viding wastewater containing cyanide ion and having a pH below 2; adding a quantity of an Fe2+ ion source to the waste- water, and causing the Fe2+ to react with the cyanide ion to form a reaction product Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3 and separating the reaction prod- uct from the wastewater.
