Helpful Tips TAking meASuremenTS

Every so often I like to rearrange the furni-ture in my house to get a different perspec-tive on things. To ensure the comfort and satisfaction of your guests, here are a few tips for placing furniture the appropriate distance apart.

Walkways: When rearranging your furniture, try to leave a minimum of 2.5 feet for walkways.

Coffee Table to Sofa: Coffee tables should be located 14-18 inches from a sofa to provide sufficient leg room, but still close enough for accessibility.

Dining Tables: In a dining room, make sure there’s a least 48 inches between each edge of the table to the nearest wall or piece of furniture for passing traffic.

Chairs: Chairs should be no more than 8 feet apart to facilitate conversation.

1 Pothos: Not only is this an attractive leafy plant, it’s a hardy plant that requires little care. For best results, keep in a medium indirect light and it only needs water when the soil feels dry to the touch. Make sure to keep this plant away from kids and pets, as their leaves will not sit well with their stomachs.

2 Spider Plant: These long, narrow leaves may look thin, but this spider plant can tolerate neglect and can thrive in a wide range of conditions. The spider plant is a perfect plant for beginners and have also been known to reduce indoor air pollution.

3 ZZ Plant: Also known as a Zanzibar Gem, this tropical peren-nial plant has smooth, shiny dark green leaves as well as a rhizome that stores water (in case you forget). The ZZ plant also has small yellow flowers, but be careful - this plant is poisonous if ingested!

4 Peace Lily: These gorgeous lilies can clean your air of many environmental contaminants and pollutants. They thrive in the shade and don’t need excessive watering. Talk about clean and simple.

5 Chinese Evergreen: This perennial plant, native to south-eastern Asia, can tolerate a wide range of light, as well as neglect, and are relatively resistant to pests.

6 Christmas Cactus: These catci are triggered into flowering when subjected to cooler temperatures, and prefer bright indirect light and moist soil.

Indoor Plant Care Tips1. Keep the soil moist. It’s better to be slightly dry

than over watered.2. Read the plant’s label to give it the appropriate

amount of light. Avoid direct sunlight.3. Warmer temperatures and low humidity can dry

out your plant. Keep it cool and moist.

as palms, can really

A Dab of ModernismBe refreshed and soothed by the clean modern look of this dining room furniture set. The Dabny dining room collec-tion features a simplistic structure, lux lines and warm white oak veneers. The warmth of this room is created by the light solid colors spread throughout the wood, walls, accessories and decor. Not to mention the large open windows that let in warm natural lighting.

Simplicity and cleanliness isn’t the only thing that makes this dining room modern. The geometric lines and shapes, from the lamp, to the server, to the windows complete this modern feel. The matching server features storage drawers and stor-age cabinets, perfect for stowing away seasonal dishes.

You don’t want your room to be too bland with all light, neutral colors, so add a little contrast with one to two darker colors. This will create depth as well as a more balanced

spacial environment. In this case, a portion of the side wall was painted with a darker color. Also, a potted plant with dark green leaves adds a new texture to the room, as well as a rich color. Potted plants can liven up the place, as well as keep the area fresher. Check out some of the hardier house plants on page three that can also reduce indoor pollutants.

Spring is right around the corner. A great way to freshen up your place is by giving it a new paint job. Learn how to paint your own home like a pro by following the steps below. To the left are a few of our pieces we’ve paired with complimentary wall colors.

1. Clear and CleanThe first step to painting your room is clearing all or most of your furniture out. You can move smaller pieces to the center of the room. You also want to remove drapes/curtains, switch plates, and artwork. Vacuum the room completely and dust the baseboards and window sills (you don’t want to mix dust and paint). Don’t forget to cover the furniture in the center with a tarp or some sort of covering.

2. Fill in the HolesIf you have any nail holes and dings that you want to get rid of, fill those with putty before painting. Make sure it dries completely.

3. Baseboards FirstPaint the baseboards first. Then once they are dry, you can put blue painter’s tape on to protect them when you’re painting the walls.

4. Drop Cloth ReadyPrep your painting area by covering the floor with a drop cloth and pouring some of your paint in a paint roller trough. You should use the rollers for the larger surface areas and a paint brush to clean up the edges and paint around small areas, like light switches, corners and edges.

5. High to LowStart at the top of your room and work your way down. If you’re painting your ceiling, do that first. Try to apply the same amount of pressure on your roller with every roll, to ensure even coverage.

6. Clean upWash out your brushes and roller while the paint is still wet and re-move the blue painter’s tape after the paint dries. Carefully roll up your drop clothes and watch where you step!
