In our every day lives, convenient inven-tions help make our tasks easier and faster. One such invention are caster

wheels. Casters can be found all around us: office chairs, shopping carts, dollies, serving carts and tables. A caster wheel is a wheel mounted to a fork, but also has an additional offset steering joint, which allows the wheel to rotate 360 degrees. Casters are usually mounted to a chassis, which is like the wheel frame.

The steering joint on the caster allows for easy turning without changing the direction of the chassis. When going straightforward, the swivel caster will rotate parallel to the direction of travel. There are also two types of casters: free moving and locking. Lock-ing casters have a built-in mechanism that prevents the wheels from moving. These are often used on larger, heavier items.

According to an article about 2011 Furniture Trends, retro fur-niture remains to have a strong presence in today’s furniture fashion through its whimsical patterns, colors and the feeling of

nostalgia. Retro style furniture is furniture that belongs to, or has the look of having been in the decades between 1950s and 1980s. Take a look at our Retro Timeline to help you spot retro-styled furniture:

Make a statement in your dining room with our new Libby col-lection. The Libby collection is crafted from poplar solids and birch veneers. Two unique features set this collection apart

from the rest: the floating table top design and vibrant patterned seat cushions.

The illusion of a floating table top is created on the dining table and server, which gives these pieces a modern feel. The dark cappuccino finished table tops are suspended by small chrome-colored pillars. The matching server is also accented with chrome-colored knobs.

The clean straight edges created by the parallel lines of the floating table top are complimented by the subtle curves of on the chair back. These side chairs are wrapped in a fun and vibrant swirl pat-tern fabric. Although the pattern is full of energy, the neutral colors of the material help soften the look and feel, making them the perfect addition to this simple dining table.

As for accessories, the best colors to pair with the Libby collection are either chrome-colored or neutral earth tones. We compliment-ed the chrome server knobs with a simple chrome based table lamp. And the Libby chair fabric is softened with a light beige floor rug. One of our swivel accent chairs is also available in this swirly pattern, making it the perfect fit for this room.

PERFECT PAIR

The floating table top feature of this din-ing collection creates a modern look. Give your dishes a modern look too by choosing simple, geometric shapes for plates and bowls. Plain white is often used in “modern-looking” homes and pairs well with most decor. Compliment with chrome utensils.

Do It Yourself addIng your own casTers

A great way to add mobility to furniture is by adding casters. Caster wheels can be added a variety of furniture pieces

with just a few tools and very little time. Casters also come in a variety of sizes for dif-ferent weight furniture pieces.

1 sElECT ThE sizESelect the appropriate size wheel that will support the weight of the piece when the furniture is “fully loaded” (ex weight of the bookcase full of books).

2 lOCkiNg vs. FREE ROlliNgDepending on what you’re adding cast-ers too, you may want to choose wheels that lock versus free rolling casters.

3 EMPTy AND FliPEmpty the piece and flip upside down, so the legs/base are upward.

4 MEAsuREDraw the location of where you want to place each caster. Make sure to pick spots that will keep your piece level and well supported.

5 DRilliNgDrill holes at the marks. Make sure your furniture piece has enough material to drill a hole long enough for your caster screw.

6 FliP AND FillOnce you’ve mounted all the casters, carefully flip the piece right side up. Test the balance of casters. Then fill with its contents.
