TEACHERS at the Sacred Heart Girls BoardingSchool in Verulam were given a rude welcomewhen a local security company attempted toevict them from the hostel area of the school onTuesday last week.
Accordingtoaparent,whowishedtoremainanonymous, a court sheriff came to reclaim theboarding section of the school.
“We,theparents,arecompletelyoutragedbythis.By its verynature this is aboarding school.Theinterdict thatwasacquiredlastyearspecifi-cally states that the schoolwill beopenedaspernormal with no interruptions. This is unfair.”
According to parents, teachers were intimi-dated into removing all goods from the hostel.
“We were being told to ‘f*** off’ and werescared. We contacted the police station andwere assisted. The police spoke to the sheriffand the security company who eventually left.
“This typeof intimidation isnotappreciated.There is a pupil in this school who achievedeightA's in last year'smatric exams.Weshouldbe focusingonthe greatwork that isbeingdonehere, not trying to shut the school down.”
Sacred Heart and Oakford Primary School,whichare situatedon land that theMaritz com-pany purchased in 2009, had almost an entiretermofnoeducation last yearaftera landbattleclaimfalloutbetweenlandownerMariusMaritzand the Department of Education.Oakford Primary School gates were finally
opened on Thursday, 19 September 2013.The Department of Education officially had
to file court papers for the opening of the maingates and themotion to have the gates officiallyopenedwasdeclaredat theDurbanHighCourt.
Department officials said they have filed aninterdict to restrain Maritz from restricting ac-cess to the schools.
Maritz is part of an ongoing four year legalbattle to expropriate the land.
Teachersandparents refused touse thepro-posedentrancesayingitaddedmorethanakilo-metre to the pupils journey through dangeroussugar cane fields. The main access road wasclosed at the start of the school term, reopenedfor around two weeks, but closed again.
Maritz’s attorney Antonette Owen said in a
statement: “We are of the view that the inde-pendenceofthejudiciaryiscritical toanydemo-cratic society.Due to the complexity of thismat-ter, we will not entertain a trial through theprinted press.
“The matter pertaining to the Sacred HeartSecondary School, the Sacred Heart HostelTrust and Oakford Priory Investments (Pty) Ltdhas been heard by the Durban High Court, andjudgment delivered thereupon. The respond-ents thereafter applied for leave to appeal,whichwasrejected.Therespondentsthereafterpetitioned theSupremeCourtofAppealand theapplication for leave to appeal was duly dis-missed.Weconsequentlyapproachedthecourt,obtained the court order and on 14 January2014 the Sheriff of the Court attended the
premises in order to execute the eviction order.The sheriff was restrained from completingsuch eviction by the actions of the school com-munity and the community in general.”
Sheadded: “Wewish topointout that securi-ty personnel having attended, were employedby the office of the Sheriff directly.
“With regards to expropriation of the schoolproperty, we wish to confirm that the Depart-ment of Education has published the Notice ofIntention toExpropriate in excess of 14monthsago. Regrettably such expropriation has notbeen concluded.
“Issues regarding access to the differentschool properties situated upon private land iscurrentlysubjudiceandthematterwillbeheardin the Durban High Court in due course.”
Sacred Hearteviction raises ire
A COMMISSION of inquiry into the mall collapse in Tongaat, KwaZuluNatal, in November, which resulted in the death of two,will begin next month, said the labour department.
The department's occupational healthand safety manager Phumudzo Maphahawill preside over the commission, which
will investigate events leading to the collapse of the mall, it said in a statement.
“We expect to call between 20 and 50witnesses to appear before the commission for interviews. In a month we expectthe commission to sit for at least twoweeks,” Maphaha said.
The hearings will take place on Tuesdays to Fridays, from 9am to 5pm at theTongaat municipal offices.
Members of the commission will prepare for the week on a Monday.
The pace of their work would be dependent on the availability of various involvedparties.
A total of R2 million was expected tobe spent in the commission’s work, whichwas expected to be concluded in sixmonths.
A section of the mall, which was underconstruction, collapsed resulting in thedeaths and 29 people were injured. Themunicipality became aware that there wasconstruction going on at the site and in
spectors were sent there before the matterultimately went to court.
The High Court in Durban granted acourt order on 14 November directing theproperty owners Rectangular Property Investments to suspend all building operations.
eThekwini municipal manager SibusisoSithole denied that the municipality haddragged its feet in attempts to halt construction at the site.
Asked why police were not called to
shut down the site, Sithole said the sitecould not be policed 24 hours a day. Themunicipality had appointed a registeredengineer to determine why the structurehad collapsed.

HIJACKINGSandviolentarmedrob-beries have escalated in the pastweek on the North Coast.
This is according to head of ReactionUnit South Africa (RUSA), Prem Balramwho said the unit had attended to severalhijackingsandarmedrobberiesinthepastweek. Balram added that house-break-ings had also spiked and seemed to be outof control.
He said that on Wednesday a patientwaiting in theparking lot of adoctor’s sur-gery in Mount View, Verulam, was ap-proachedbytwomenwhoenquiredaboutthe doctor’s operating hours.
“During the conversation the suspectsdrew 9mmpistols and held up the victim.They then removed his valuables and fledin his silver greyOpel Corsa bakkie, regis-tration number ND 753 568.”
Balram said that an extensive searchforthevehiclewasconducted,but theydidnot recover it.
Inanother incidentonFriday,RUSAre-sponded to another incidentwhere a pas-tor was hijacked at the Verulam PublicPool in Lotusville by two armed men.
“The victim arrived at the pool for amorning swimwhenhewasheldupbyanarmedsuspect.Hewasthenassaultedand
taken to his vehicle where a second sus-pect was waiting. The victim was therobbed for his vehicle, a white Toyota Co-rolla registration number NJ 58506 andhis cell phones.”
In a third incident RUSA officers re-sponded to a hijacking in progress onThursday.
Balram said that a couple was held atgunpoint near the Canelands Library byfour armed men.
“The victims were then assaulted andput into the bin of the bakkie. A box wasplaced over the female victim’s head andthe couple was assaulted and robbed oftheir jackets, cell phones and other be-longings. The suspects fled when theycould not start the victim’s Mazda bak-kie.”
In the final incident three armed mengained entry into the home of an Inanda- Tea Estate resident and stabbed the vic-tim while robbing the home.
BalramsaidthatthesuspectsthenstoleR25000incash,cellphones,jewelleryandfled.
“We had responded to several morecases of robbery and almost 27 house-breakings in the past week and in mostcasesplasma televisions, laptopsandoth-erelectronicswerestolenbythesuspects.”

THEdecomposingbodyof anel-derly femalewas found in a Tre-nance Park home in Verulam onSunday afternoon after mem-bers ofReactionUnit SouthAfri-ca (RUSA) were called out to in-vestigate a stench.
According to the RUSA headPremBalramtheyreceivedacallfrom a resident inWalnut Road,Trenance Park after the homeowners returned from a holidayto find the doors locked and thedomestic worker missing.
“The family then opened therear door and noticed the do-mestic lying on floor. Reactionofficers and the RUSA ambu-lance responded to the sceneand gained entry to the home.The body of the female, who isapproximately80yearsold,wasin the advance stage of decom-position.”Balramsaid thatuponmaking
enquiries itwas established thattheneighbourshadlastseenandspoke to the domestic workerfive days earlier. She is believedtohaveworked for the family for30 years and lived in Amouti.
Balram said that the causeof death was not confirmed andthe scene was handed over toVerulam SAPS.
Police are investigating.

EIGHTpeoplewereinjuredinanacci-dent on Sunday afternoon in Veru-lam.
One person was critically injuredandsevenothersufferedvariousinju-ries when a white VW Golf and aGreenOpelcollidedat theR102 inter-section. According to Reaction UnitSouth Africa (RUSA) head Prem Bal-ram, the vehicles were travelling inopposite directionswhen they collid-ed. Balram said it appeared that onevehiclewas turningandcollidedwitha car travelling south on the R102.
However, he couldnot confirm thecause of the accident adding that oneof the injured parties were returningfrom a prayer gathering.
“Both vehicles were extensivelydamaged and eight people were in-jured.”
Balram said that the RUSAmedi-caldivision,EmergencyMedicalRes-cueServices (EMRS) andother emer-
gency services respondedswiftly andtransported the injured to surround-inghospitals. He said that one of theinjuredthatwastransportedtoVicto-ria Hospital in Tongaat was in a criti-cal conditionandhadsuffereda largeopen wound across his chest.
Balram said that the RUSA ambu-lance division had responded to sev-eral accident scenes over the festiveperiod and that in most cases itseemed that speeding, drunken driv-ing and negligence was the cause oftheaccidents.Policeareinvestigatinga case of reckless and negligent driv-ing.
Netcare 911 spokesperson ChrisBotha confirmed the incident “Net-care 911 paramedics arrived at thescene and found that injured at theside of the roadway with injuriesranging from serious to minor. Afterparamedics stabilised themon scenethey transported the injured toa localhospital for the care that they re-quired.”

Malema, who is currently trying to win over thehearts and souls of the KZN crowd, faced an angrycrowd in Nkandla last week and a small group atUmlazi this weekend.
In true Malema style, the new party leaderdecided to build a home for a povertystrickenNkandla resident, who lives less than five metresfrom Zuma’s multimillion homestead.

Let the games begin
IF you didn’t know, gentle reader, that the AmericanNational Security Agency (NSA) together withother mostly first world governments is spying
on, well, the entire global population, slap yourselfvigorously a few times before reading on.
It now seems that those unshaven, creepy conspir
acy theorists were mostly right,thanksto revelationsby one Edward Snowden, who released masses of data to the press last year as proof of how far globalsurveillance reaches. Ten years ago we thought ofconspirophiles who used to bleat about this sortof thing as paranoid nutters sitting in basements cladin tinfoil hats, drawing faecesdiagrams on wallswhile hiding from electromagnetic waves and mindcontrol experiments.
Today we see them on television answering questions about worldwide publicspying networks.
As you will know, the granddaddy of all conspiracy theories is that of the New World Order, whichhas moved into the mainstream milieu as a quasi social goal for some and a source of worldwide fear forothers.
The NWO has been adopted by religious andsecular conspirophiles alike and goes something likethis: The world is secretly controlled by a small corporateaffiliated elite that belong to secret societiessuch as the Illuminati, Bilderbergers, Skull & Bones,Bohemian Grove and so on. Through these societies,they plot world domination.
It’s a bit like ‘Pinky and the Brain’ with welldressed sociopaths thrown into the mix.
We are told that the elite (also more frequentlyknown as the 1%) will achieve total control of theearth by setting up a one world government completewith army, monetary system, media and religion.
The uninformed masses (that would be youand me the 99%) will be relegated to the statusof cattle and have as our sole purpose obeisanceto the elite.
This may sound like your current office environment, but according to conspirophiles, a ‘totalitarian
oneworld state’ is where we are heading.The conspirophiles say that mass surveillance
and a clampdown on things like human rights, freedom of expression and movement, the widening gapbetween the rich and poor and the erosion of the middleclass are sound indications that the NWO isknocking on our doorstep and will soon slither overthe threshold.
Those who see a one world government as a positive thing are happy to use the term New World Orderdevoid of nefarious connotations, seeing it ratheras a necessary social evolution that is a panacea toall of the globe’s manmade ills: Legislate the countryand its population and you control all of the stupidthings they do, like war, famine and environmentalcockups. Whatever your stance, we will agree thatthe world is being monitored on a scale never beforeseen, thanks to massive steps in technology and,many would say, greed.
Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and smartphones make it laughably easy to sharepersonal data and find personal data and the whereabouts of almost anyone, anywhere.
And that data can and is very often sold to marketing companies, advertisers and even governments,without our knowledge or consent.
This makes it simple to track citizens at anytime for reasons that can be decided by those whoare in positions of authority.
The possibilities for paranoia here are endless,which is why many conspirophiles have found solacein the Deep Web; mostly an encrypted part of theinternet not connected to what we use, theSurfaceWeb. It is here that (for now) governments and lawenforcement can be avoided. It is also fertile breeding

ground for crime because it is so difficult topenetrate.
But before we lockourselves in ourdoomsdaypreppercaves, let’s rememberthat no one knowshow this tale of potential global woe will playout.
It could go eitherway, really.
Or we could simplystay as we are, a littleglobe wheezingthrough a tired galaxy.The conspirophiles willkeep their tinfoil hatsand prepper supplieshandy ‘just in case’.

THE downside to the festive season isthe shortage of blood stocks currentlybeing experienced by the South AfricanNational Blood Service (SANBS).
“Our blood stocks are extremely low,in particular Group O blood, the universal blood group that can be given toanyone in an emergency,” says SifisoKhoza, spokesman for the east coast region of SANBS.
“The national stock level is only on2.0 days but (more alarmingly) KZN ison 0.7 days.
“We need five days cover to be in ahealthy situation.
“This means that you could be at arisk of losing a loved one who mightneed a lifesaving blood transfusion oryou may yourself need a blood transfusion should there not be adequate
blood available,” Khoza said.Collections in the country continue
to drop drastically during the festiveseason, resulting in a daily average ofabout 2.0 day’s blood being available.
This is far less than the fivedaystock required to be collected by theSANBS to ensure that the country’s demand for safe and adequate blood is
met.SANBS needs to collect 3 000 units
of blood a day to meet the country’sdemand.
This is a plea to all South Africanswho meet the minimum requirementsto commit to donating blood, especiallyat this very difficult period.
This act of kindness can save up tothree lives.

A HUMAN hand was reported tohavebeenfoundatapropertyinLa-goonDrive, Salt Rock on Monday,but police did not find anything atthe scene.
IPSS’s Frank Labidi said in anonline report that his control cen-tre received the call atabout10am,asking forhelpasadomesticwork-er had allegedly found the hand inone of the tenant’s rooms.
“I personally attended the callanddueto the fact that thepremis-eswasopen,enteredandsearchedfor the “hand”.
“Nothing suspicious was foundand we decided to call in SAPSdue to the seriousness of the alle-
gations,” he said.About a three-hour search was
conducted, which included Um-hlali SAPS staff, provincial staffand IPSS, with nothing beingfound.
Libidi said the witness - report-edly a 17-year-old domestic work-er - kept changing her story.
Umhlali SAPS station com-mander Colonel Simon Bhek-ithembaZondi saidasnothingwasfound, no docket was opened andthe case is now closed.
“I was shocked... but after athorough search, nothing wasfound,” he said.

TONGAAT Panthers Athletic Club (TPAC)will be hosting its famous 32km Community Race after a long absence on Sunday, 2March from the Outspan Grounds.
The route for the race runs along theWatson Highway and the coastal regionsof Seatides, La Mercy. According to Athletics South Africa, KZN Athletics and NorrieWilliamson who marked the route some 10years ago, the route is very scenic and agood build up to a standard marathon.Previously this race attracted athletesfrom throughout the country.
According to Panthers president LajeethMaharaj they will be anticipating a hugecrowd. The club will also be hosting a 5kmfun run for the kids and the less serious athletes. Maharaj said ever since starting thisrace the community and a number ofschools, religious and community organisations have played a pivotal role in making the race a huge success.
Due to the economic situation in thecountry, the race did not take place in thelast three years. In order for the race to besuccessful, the management and members of the club are appealing to 32 individuals or 32 business houses to pledge R1000 or more in the town to assist the clubto make the once famous community racea success.
The club is also appealing to clothingfactoriesintheTongaatorVerulamregionsto sponsor the club with TShirts and othergoodies.
