Coastal Processes, Hazards and Society

This online course will provide students with a global perspective of coastal landscapes, the processes responsible for their formation, diversity, and change over time, as well as societal responses to current changes in the coastal zones around the world. Active learning elements include analyzing real data sets and applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills to real-world coastal issues that affect human populations. Students will complete a capstone project in which they consider a real-world coastal issue. The course will comprise four UNITS, each lasting 3-4 weeks and made up of 3 modules each (12 modules total).

We used data from a World Bank sponsored study “Future flood losses in major coastal cities” (Hallegatte et. al. 2013) published in Nature Climate Change. This study used several factors to rank coastal cities in terms of their vulnerability to coastal flooding. It compared flood loss as a % of GDP. It also looked at future projections. We took two of the most vulnerable places to investigate further: New Orleans and Guanzhou, China.
