Oaky Creek Coal is located between the mining towns of Tieri and Middlemount in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, 90 kilometres northwest of Emerald.

OwnershipOaky Creek Coal is managed by Glencore on behalf of a joint venture between Glencore (55%), Sumisho Coal Australia (25%), Itochu Coal Resources Australia (10%) and ICRA OC (10%).

Our History

The Oaky Creek Coal mining operation commenced open cut dragline operations in 1982 with saleable coal being produced in December.

Development work for a second underground longwall mine commenced at Oaky North Mine in 1995 and longwall coal was first produced in February 1999.19

Underground mining commenced in July 1989 with longwall operations being established at Oaky No. 1 Mine in 1990.

The open cut operations ceased in December 2006.

• In 2013, Oaky Creek Coal constructed and commissioneda purpose-built Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plantfor treatment of mine-affected legacy pit water. The treatedwater is re-used in operations as a substitute for raw waterin industrial applications.

• The water treatment plant has reduced the mine’s raw water usage by more than 1 billion litres each year (over 60% reductioninrawwaterusage–equivalenttomore than 500 Olympic swimming pools of freshwater saved annually).

• As more mine services switch to Reverse Osmosis water,it is expected to achieve up to 90% reduction on raw waterusage in 2014/2015.

• The water management initiatives being implementedat Oaky Creek Coal demonstrate leading practice thatwill help achieve the objectives of Glencore’s watermanagement strategy for its Queensland coal operations:• To be able to handle weather extremes;• To use water more efficiently; and

• To recycle water wherever possible.

Oaky Creek Coal is committed to ongoing open and honest communication with the local community and other stakeholders. We actively seek to engage and consult the community to provide information relating to the environmental, social and operational performance of the mines and enable the community to provide feedback. Members of the local community are encouraged to contact us to raise any concerns they may have.

Our broad community program, which includes donations, sponsorship and in-kind assistance for a range of environmental, community and educational initiatives, demonstrates our ongoing support for the local community.

Oaky Creek Coal operates two underground mines with associated coal handling and processing infrastructure. The underground operations are modern, state of the art longwall operations with associated developmental works.
