Coal washing will be made mandatory. This will require setting up large number ofwasheries. Therefore, the environment ministry is finalizing the terms of referencefor setting up coal washeries. This will make getting environmental clearance forsetting up washeries a less cumbersome process.

By 2020, Indias annual coal production is expected to touch onebillion tonne mark. This will necessarily mean more production fromlarge mechanized open cast mines. This is bound to impact thequality of run of mine (ROM) coal due to increase in `out of seamdilution and accordingly matching coal washing capacity would beneeded.
Recent amendment to the Environment Protection Rules 2014 is a
positive development for the Indian coal preparation industry. Underthe new provisions, besides the consumers, the coal producers /suppliers are also responsible for ensuring that coal of ash contentnot exceeding 34% is supplied to the power plants located beyond adistance of 750 KM and those located in urban and environmentallysensitive locations. This becomes effective from January 2015 andthe distance will be further reduced to 500 KM effective June 52016.
Under the new dispensation the Central and State pollution controlenforcement agencies will now have some teeth to act against thecoal suppliers and the coal consumers who violate the mandate. Atthe same time this new mandate is bound to help in boosting up thepace of setting up of new coal washeries in the country.
In the above backdrop, the Coal Preparation Society of India (CPSI) a non-government and non-profit professional body of the CoalPreparation Industry will organize a Conference during 16-17 April2015 at New Delhi on topical theme:
Focus of the event will be on current and projected coal scenario inthe country, quality related compulsions, industrys immediateconcerns with regard to existing as well as new coal washingfacilities, planned as well as in the pipeline. Policy and Regulatoryaspects and associated issues will also be covered.
Concurrent to the Conference, Expo will be organised by TAFCONGroup, professional trade exhibitions organisers with an expertiseand experience of over 6 decades. TAFCON has been serving themining and allied industry for more than 20 years.
The Event will highlight Indian Coal Industrys ambitious plans ofincreasing coal making capacity matching with rapid increase in CoalProduction in an environment friendly manner.
Besides a large number of industry professionals the event has theassured support and participation of 41 large companies who arecorporate Members of CPSI. Government policy makers, professional managers & decision makers, from coal, power, iron &steel, cement and allied industries from India and abroad will beparticipating in this important conference.
The Conference aims at Technology Showcasing and New BusinessOpportunities in India Coal Preparation Industry both for domesticand international companies.
Coal Washing in India-Emerging Business Opportunity: Priorities &Challenges
The conference will deliberate upon the pressing issues pertaining tothe Indian Coal, Coal Preparation, Power generation, Iron & Steel,Cement and allied industries with a view to suggesting compatible
solutions. Over 300 participants from more than 12 countries andtrade delegates are expected to participate in this event.
Positive recommendations and suggestions emerging fromConference deliberations shall be compiled and forwarded to theGovernment of India for considerations in making new coal policies.
India is endowed with abundant coal resources but
due to the very generic nature of their formation, our coaldeposits have high inherent ash content. As electricitygeneration, iron & steel and many other industries are heavilycoal dependent, it is important that the run of mine (ROM)coal should be beneficiated and ash content brought down soas to meet the technological requirement of the user industryand also to comply with the Environment Protection Rules2014 in respect of thermal coals.
I understand that the Coal Preparation Society ofIndia (CPSI) has been dedicatedly promoting washing /beneficiation of domestic coal as a step towards a clean coalproduction - supply chain in the country.
I am very happy to know CPSI is organising aConference on a very important and topical theme CoalWashing in India - Emerging Business Opportunity: Priority &Challenges.
I am sure this conference will be a goodopportunity for all participants and stakeholders to deliberateupon some of the key issues pertaining to the theme and alsodiscuss how best our countrys coal industry can deliver therequired quantity of coal to meet the requirement of theeconomy as a whole.
I look forward to some positive recommendationsemerging out of the conference deliberations that wouldprovide some positive suggestions to the government inmaking new Coal Policy.
I wish the conference a great success.

Coal India Ltd. should sell crushed and washed coal only, accordingly the Company has been asked to takesteps so that only such coal is sold by the end of the next three to four years.
Coal production in the last four years has hardly been growing by 1-1.5 per cent. I have an ambitious targetof nearly a billion tonnes in the next four years
Comprehensive measures for enhancing domestic coalproduction are being put in place along with stringentmechanism for quality control and environmental
protection, which includes supply of crushed coal andsetting up of washeries
