Gary Mernagh Sarsfields Captain

Sersflelds (eptein Gery Mernegh MS been e reel leeder on and off the field for the Blues this yeer. H{lving rMde his WilY into

the senior side e few years {lgo Gery quickly estebli$hed himself end has developed Into e very relieble defender with plenty of Skllt to rMtch his speed and anticipation.

In fllCt, It's e tribute to his team rMtes that II hurler of Gery's calibfe should be confined to corner b4K:k whep such II natUl'lIl hurler could perhaps be ckployed outfield.

GlIry 15 a man who eets (lnd sleeps hurling. A cooch by profession, Gary hils been exten· sively Involved In cooching in Dublin where he. works and lives and is not IIfrllid to bring new idells to the training fields in Thuries either. ¥lin)' of his training methods have been used over the illst number of weeks.,d months by SlIrsfields ¥Id GlIry Is mw{ly$ re~ lind willing to try out the routines with the pl<Jyers.

It's a real sign of Grey's commitment and determination to succeed to say that he recovered from a very serious Mnd illury to play hurling lIga;n. Gary extensively damaged his left hand lit work some yeM'S ego lind is forced to weer protectiVe strllpplng ellch and every time he goes out to hurl or plllY footbill!. At the time, It looked as though Gery's ClIreer would be cut prerMturely short, but true to form, he took the injury on the chirl lind rllllied lIglIirI to make a wonderful recovery.

On the field Gery Memegh is e serious rMn who cuts e reel desh. Off the field he is {I reel ch{lrlKter end one of the [{Ids who is elw{ly$ winding others up. Never short of e word or two, Gery Is quick witted {lnd ever willing to join irI the creic.

For him to lift the [){In Breen today would be: e huge pel"SOl"lalllChieve~nt. It would be e massive lift to Thurles SlIrsfidds; e huge boost to hurling in Thurles; end e dre{lm come

true for Gery MerTWIgh end his femily.

GrOWing up in Thurle:s in ~ 1960's( we were often reminded of the grec:tt hurling tradition OU( town

possessed. we learned I ~ the C.B.S, that the G.A.A. was founded just down the street, but the boost that fasdl)ll ted me was when I heard that, over the year's, hurler.; from the: parish of ThurJe.s t'lad won over one hundred Al l-Ireland Senior hurting med8ls.

So I ded ded to take oS cI~r look li t this claim to one hundred medals. I d idn' t Include hurlers from other clubs, who were part of the Thurles Inter-county selection In the early years. However, I did include Thurles players who were substitutes on the various teams, I alsO indudeahur1ers from the first A11·lreland Championship (1887) who played., the gM'M!:s up to the final but who, due to 6 cfrsagreement, didn't play in the final.

IN 1988 when Mullinahone folk travelled to Cion mel for the South Tipperary junior hurling final nobody could have realised what lay ahead In the coming years.

The junior final was won the same way, and the CJ Kickhams bandwagon had begun to roll. Later that winter U-21 'B' South and County hurling and football double was won.

1989 was a great year for the premier county, but a better one for the boys from Kickhams town.

After winning South U-21 'A' and Junior hurling titles, we went on to win County honours in both, beatinbg Declan final, only to narrowly faU to Ryan's (lonoulty in the U-21 and Clonoulty. JO}JJ\J lE)\}J'f - the ultimate hurler

The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Gaelic Football and Hurling by MlIrtin Bf'eheny and 0eM1 Keenan, was published In

2001 . It contains profiles of 42 cootefll)Ofar)' hurlers of John Leahy. John is not Included.

let's jog the collectiVe memories of Martin lind DonaL look at the videos of the '91 Munster Final replay; the '91 All -Ireland; the '93 Munster Final; the '94 league Final; the 2000 Munster Championship games against Wliterford and Clare ... just for starters! Consider John's role In guiding Muliinahone Into their first County Final In 1997, only to lose by 2 points.

See the eulogies that have Been written about Leahy after numerous blg games. Recall DiMrkJid Flyrr')'s piece i1 The £x4frW'Ier when he stated that if he were selecting a team of the best contemporary hurlers, John Leahy would be the first player he would pick.

15 years great service surely deserves recognition. In the words of hiS former mantlger Babs Ketlting, John is tI "tremendous pltlyer with great courage tlnd

strength, who did everything for the team". Has there ever been tI louder ovation to greet a player, thtln when Leahy was introduced against (Itlre in 2oo1?

In Mullinahone, where football was king, Leaky has inspired tlnd tutOf'ed a fine crop of players In BriM O'Metirtl, the (urrans, the Kellys, Eddie (tirey, Pat (roke, etc. When John eventually retires he will be happy in the knowledge that Muilinahone is tI powerhouse In Tlpp hurling.

During the 80's, 9O's,tlnd now Into the new century, he htls enthrtilled and delighted speCttltors with his charismatic displays. Picture for tI moment the hand going skywtlrds to ctltch the dropping ball, the frisson of excitement as he bursts through the opposition, tlnd the skilful long-striking which produced so many wonderful SCOf'es.

John has produced tllegtlC)' tlnd litany of performances which will tllwtlys endure in the memory of those privileged to have witnessed such prodigious skill tlnd talent.

Wen Deny Gowan back In 1969 put forward the innovative Idea of having ~ socllli /lctMties run by GIlA during

We Mel IMny wonderful nights of music sons MId dance In the Intervening years But with so many fidel actMt/f:S now ongoing In all catcsones, club comrMtees find it hard to cope WIth 1111 the pressures, so at present Sc6f Is losing out In some ~rishes.

Gerry Ring from West, "stalwart In Sc6r in the: earty years, will do hIS utmost to revive interest egaln in hrs dMsIon. So now sentle~n /Ictior'rs speale: louder than words, hopefully we may now look forward to more clubs partlciPl'ting In the years IIhlMd.

We had a very enjoyable celebratory party In Elsie Hogan"s hostelry, Ballinderry, In September - delayed because Sk::JbhMl ~nt on tour With lord of the D.!nce In Germany.

She was returning for a second term in earty October, a lovely rxrsonality, a good ambassadress for our Irish culture In EUfC>pe. We wish SIobh6n much luck In her career.

You don't have to be an athlete to represent your parish - perhaps you play music, sins. daoce Of recite. \l:lhlle winning a competition is a bonus, it Is the participation that Is Important. Perhaps we have a Louise MorrIssey, Domnic Kirwan or Eamon McCann, who started their careers In Sc6r, hiding out in thf; parish and only need encouragement from some Sc6r official to come forward

Sc6r Thiobraid Nann are lucky to have a very committed cathaolrleach, Johnny Deillney, lind ruMI, Mary MUrphy, who intend to make sure Sc6r will rerMln /In Influential part of thf; GM CIIlendllr In county TIpper/IfY.

We hilve h&d clubs over the years competing In County Finals regularly, but ~r winning, eg. Newcastle Set, eventually their luck turned, "00
