MESSAGE BY CHAIRMAN OF IEEE GEOSCIENCE &

REMOTE SENSING MALAYSIA CHAPTER

IEEE Workshop on Geoscience and Remote Sensing (IWGRS 2019) is the 6th edition of our society’s

annual workshop. GRSS Malaysian chapter is pleased to note the growth of this workshop over the

years. The support received from researchers; local, regional and international, have reached a new

height. I am proud to see many participations from ASEAN region, such as Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore

and Philippines in this year’s IWGRS. As we are going to organize IGARSS (IEEE International Geoscience

and Remote Sensing Symposium) 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, this is encouraging to promote further remote

sensing collaborations in the ASEAN region.

This workshop is dedicated to the sharing of recent advancement in earth observation (EO) research

activities and applications stemming from recent developments in advanced remote sensing

technologies. I hope the participants can use this platform to engage in local, regional and international

collaborations.

IWGRS 2019 marks the first time this workshop have been organized outside an education institution. I

would like to express our sincere appreciation to Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA), where we are

gathered today, for jointly organizing this workshop. Also, not forgetting our IEEE GRS (Geoscience and

Remote Sensing) Society for supporting us throughout with various assistance and advice that we

greatly appreciate.

We would like to sincerely thank Prof. David Kunkee, Executive Vice President of IEEE GRS Society for

joining us this time. Our heartfelt appreciation also goes to our supporting organizations, which are

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Univeristi Teknologi Mara, Univeristi

Tenaga Nasional, Institution of Geospatial and Remote Sensing Malaysia, Multimedia University and

Science & Technology Research Institute for Defence. Special thanks and appreciation to our four

Keynote Speakers; Prof. Hiroyoshi Yamada, Prof. Yang-Lang Chang, Prof. Arifin Nugroho and Dr Sun

Hong Bo who would share with you their latest research outcomes and activities.

My gratitude to fellow IWGRS committee who worked and contributed their time relentlessly in making

this workshop a success. Finally, I hope that our international participants will have some time to enjoy

Malaysian diverse culture and visit many scenic places in Malaysia. Thank you very much for all your

support, attendance and participation.

Thank you.

MESSAGE BY DIRECTOR GENERAL OF MALAYSIAN SPACE AGENCY (MYSA)

On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to welcome all distinguished guests and participants

to the IEEE Workshop on Geoscience & Remote Sensing (IWGRS 2019). I would like to thank IEEE

Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Malaysia Chapter, for entrusting MYSA to be co-organiser for

this conference. This conference is attended by more than 60 participants from abroad as well as local

including universities, government and private agencies and IEEE members from all over the Asia region.

This conference will focus on remote sensing technology application on geoscience particularly in the

context of Remote Sensing for Sustainable Environment. By organizing this event, it will benefit the

country in empowering national initiative on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), providing

sharing platform for researchers and to improve human capital development in Research and

Development (R&D) on space technology majoring in remote sensing. These efforts have the capability

to enhance and strengthen the the strategic collaboration between the international remote sensing

communities.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all organising committee

members, both steering IEEE GRSS Malaysia and from MYSA, and those who are involved directly or

indirectly, in ensuring the success of this event. Finally on behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would

like to wish all participants a successful conference with fruitful deliberations, and networking.

Thank you.

MESSAGE BY IEEE GRSS

Executive Vice President

Welcome from the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE GRSS).

The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society is pleased support our Malaysia Chapter colleagues

in extending you a warm welcome to the IEEE Workshop on Geoscience and Remote Sensing. The

workshop is organized by prominent members of the remote sensing community that help to build the

cross-disciplinary relationships needed to address the many challenging problems facing our world in

which remote sensing, geoscience and related disciplines play key roles.

Our IEEE Society is involved with the theory, concepts and techniques of science and engineering that

apply to remote sensing of the earth, atmosphere, and oceans and the processing, interpretation and

dissemination of remotely sensed information. Each year we sponsor several small conferences related

to these topics in addition to our flagship conference, IGARSS - the International Geoscience and

Remote Sensing Symposium which is held every year in a different region of the world in part, to engage

the international remote sensing community as much as possible.

As many of you already know, IGARSS will be held in Kuala Lumpur in 2022! We are very excited about

the opportunities that IGARSS can create for the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Communities in

Malaysia, Southeast Asia as well as our GRSS Society. It is our hope that you will discover the value GRSS

can bring to you through technical and professional activities, networking and community engagement.
