Contemporary placements

• Level 3• 43 students on contemporary placements• 7 in TV & 36 in WM• Lots of interest from OTs in practice to undertake long arm

supervision• 25 OTs in practice as PEs• 6 tutors at the university as PEs• Placements in 15 established settings• Placements in 3 organisations new to OT students (WM)

(Grapevine, Elliott House, Finefutures)• 1 new project placement in TV (Topas Unit)

Summer placements

• 21 level 3 students (10 resits)– 16 passed– 1 deferral– 3 failed– 2 still completing

Level 2 Evaluations• Extremely positive evaluations, unfortunately only 66 received ( %)• ‘exemplary support’• ‘placement allowed me to find myself as an OT’• ‘excellent learning opportunity’• ‘excellent for developing professional skills and working independently’• ‘enthusiastic PE, who challenged me to learn new ways of working’• ‘encouraged to try ideas and allowed to be creative and implemented

Level 2 Evaluations• ‘placement is an exhausting time for students but also for educators I

think they should be given at least 1 extra day annual leave’• ‘Commute and travel expenses’• ‘I sometimes felt that my educator didn’t always have as much time as I

needed at times. I didn’t always agree with the way I was spoken to and this made me feel negative toward the placement and not want to be there’

• ‘Unfortunate I received incorrect details of placement area as my educator had rotated and this impacted upon preparation’

• ‘access to patient notes’• ‘I feel that educators need to made aware that students are not marked

on a pass / fail basis and that students should be encouraged to achieve the best marks and not just be satisfied with a pass’

• 4 students reported that arrangements were not made for supervision is their educator was not available.

Level 2 Evaluations

• 3 students reported not receiving feedback in a timely fashion.• 1 student reported not receiving supervision and teaching in line with

professional requirements.• 2 students reported that their PE did not appear to understand

assessment procedure and documentation.• 1 students reported that the placement did not enable them to develop

integration of theory to practice.• 1 student did not feel challenged to use their evidence base.• 2 student did not feel able to approach staff to discuss issues. • 1 student reported that they did not feel confident that repeated

unprofessional behaviour would be reported within the organisation and explained that they felt that one educator had been unprofessional and only provided negative feedback – this feedback has not been reported by other students in the Trust.

Level 1 Evaluations• Overall the evaluations were extremely positive – unfortunately only

59 evaluations returned (33%)• ‘I had a fantastic placement. The opportunities to observe and

participate exceeded my expectations’• ‘interesting placement with specialist services’• ‘I was able to develop my skills and gain in depth knowledge’• ‘amazing – opportunities exceptional’• ‘extremely positive experience’• ‘fantastic placement – 2 practice educators who were

CPD

• Interprofessional Conference – 17th June 2015• The second interprofessional conference was held at the Welcome Centre,

the theme for the conference was ‘hearing the student voice’ whilst promoting excellence in practice education.

• Included a keynote lecture from Professor Lisa Bayliss Pratt representing HEE and a range of workshops including attachment styles, IPL, hearing the student voice

• Used actors to role play a real life scenario ‘overcoming the challenges of practice learning’

• Conference was well attended by a range of professionals • Overall was very well evaluated• The conference planning committee are meeting to organise the 2016

APPLE Accreditation• APPLE has undergone review at the COT• As of July 2nd 2015 APPLE has become a BAOT member only benefit.

Occupational therapists who are already booked to complete a course, or working towards accreditation and who are NOT members of BAOT will have their accreditation honoured, however when the time to reaccredit arrives they will not be able to do so unless they become a member of BAOT.

• The six learning outcomes from the previous version of APPLE remain the same. The APPLE resources have been updated by the Steering Group which is formed of academic colleagues and COT staff to reflect the current professional language, culture and workforce requirements but continue to align to the original outcomes.

• The new webpages and resources have been uploaded and are now in use.

APPLE Accreditation

• Limited numbers of people renewed accreditation

• 300 educators have been accredited by Coventry university

• Currently we have 112 known accredited educators

• Now offering a viva for reaccreditation – please contact [email protected] if you wish to complete your reaccreditation via viva

• A question has been asked about how much support do PE’s need to give to the student for their presentation? “If they come with only a few ideas are we supposed to point out relevant research articles etc it is difficult to know how much information would come from the educator and how much from the student”
