Acid Sulphate Problems
Pyrite Oxidation: FeS2 + 7/2 O2 Fe2+ + 2 SO42- + 2 H+
Oxidized pyritic soil material will release large quantities of acid groundwater to the field and canals at the beginning of the rainy season.
Field paddy rice as affected by pyrite oxidation
The effect of pyrite oxidation:• Low pH (below 3.5),• Toxicity of Al, Fe, and SO4,• Deficiency of essential
nutrient.
Using simple technology of fiber watergate, farmers can maintain water levelabove pyrite level, and they can growrice two times a year with averageproduction 5.5 tons/ha for theplanting season I and 3 tons/ha for theplanting season II.Pyrite
