This coming week will we celebrate a curious feast, The Chair of Saint Peter. The famous Bernini sculpture behind the high altar of Saint Peter’s Basilica enshrines the relic of the chair that Simon Peter is believed to have used. The feast is properly understood as a celebration of the ministry of Saint Peter, and by extension, his successors, as the Bishop of Rome. The date was set to also commemorate Saint Peter’s confession when Our Risen Lord asked him, “Simon Peter, do you love me?”
Pope Benedict wrote that “Celebrating the ‘Chair’ of Peter, therefore, as we are doing today, means attributing a strong spiritual significance to it and recognizing it as a privileged sign of the love of God, the eternal Good Shepherd, who wanted to gather his whole Church and lead her on the path of salvation.” In other words, the ministry of Saint Peter is a ministry of bringing about unity in the life of the Church. We live at time when the authority of basic institutions is threatened. Perhaps today we can pray for Pope Francis that his ministry may be a source of unity in the life of the Church and that we the Church might better testify to the power of the Cross.

Esta semana vamos a celebrar una curiosa fiesta, La Cátedra de San Pedro. La famosa escultura de Bernini detrás del altar mayor de la Basílica de San Pedro exalta la reliquia de la silla que Simón Pedro que se cree el mismo utilizo. La fiesta se entiende debida-mente como una celebración del ministerio de San Pedro, y por sucesión, el de sus su-cesores, como obispos de Roma. La fecha se fijó también para conmemorar la confe-sión de fe de San Pedro cuando se enfrentó a Nuestro Señor Resucitado que preguntó: “Simón Pedro, ¿me amas?” El Papa Benedicto escribió que, “ Celebrar la ‘Cátedra’ de Pedro, como lo estamos ha-ciendo hoy, significa atribuirle un fuerte significado espiritual y reconocerlo como un signo privilegiado del amor de Dios, el Buen Pastor eterno, que quería reunir a toda su Iglesia y guiarla en el camino de la salvación. En otras palabras, el ministerio de San Pedro es un ministerio para lograr la unidad en la vida de la Iglesia. Vivimos en un momento en que la autoridad de las instituciones básicas se ve amenazada. Qui-zás hoy podamos orar por el Papa Francis-co para que su ministerio sea una fuente de unidad en la vida de la Iglesia y que noso-tros, la Iglesia, podamos testificar mejor el poder de la Cruz.
