Soa – general informationSoa is not only the capital, but also the biggest city in Bulgaria. It is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country. It occupies a strategic position at the centre of the Balkan Peninsula. Soa's history spans 2,400 years. Its ancient name Serdika derives from the local Celtic tribe of the Serdi who established the town in the 5th century BC. It remained a relatively small settlement until 1879, when it was declared the capital of Bulgaria.

Soa is the 15th largest city in the European Union with a population of around 1.3 million people, or 1,241,396 in the city proper. Many of the major universities, cultural institutions, and businesses of Bulgaria are concentrated in Soa. Even the motto of the city: “Grows, but does not age”, is enough to understand the dynamic of its development.

Public transportation

Taxis

From the airport to downtown Soa

Although Soa, with its more than 1,3 Million inhabitants, is the biggest city in Bulgaria, the city center is easily accessible by foot.

All venues are located within walking distance from each other.

Public transportation: http://www.soatrac.bg/en/transport/121/marshrutna-mrezha Price for a one-way ticket: 1 lev = 0.50 Euro cents You must punch the ticket immediately after you get on the vehicle.

Usually taxis in Bulgaria are relatively cheap. You can stop a taxi anywhere by waving your hand. But be careful - there are a lot of fake taxis willing to cheat foreigners ;)

Every taxi should have the list with rates (price per km) located on the window from the passenger side. The standard taxi fare is 0.79 lv/km - 0.89 lv/km.

Trustful taxi companies:OK Supertrans: +359 2 973 21 21

Yellow taxi: + 359 2 91 119

Always look at the phone number written on the car, because this is a god way to recognise the real taxis from the fake ones.

There is a taxi parking at the exit of the airport but we recommend you to go to the “OK Supertrans” desk in the airport hall. Ask for a taxi there and you will receive a ticket with your name and the number of the taxi (it is written on the front window of the car). It will cost you not more than 10 euros (20 leva) to get to the hostel.

Let’s discover Bulgarians

Bulgaria is famous with:

In Bulgaria people shake their heads up and down when they mean “no” and left to right for “yes”. Crazy, right? But it’s true! Good luck in understanding us :)Bulgarians are very easy-going, hospitable and friendly. In big companies with friends we are usually very loud, which is normal. We are always ready to help you and give you directions and information.National instrument is the bagpipes – called the gaida.

Rose oil - used for making some of the world’s most popular and expensive parfumes. One gram rose oil is produced out of 1000 rose blossoms.

The Bulgarian folk song “Izlel e Delio Haydutin” - it has been ying around open space together with Bach’s and Mozart’s greatest works since 1977 when the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes left the Earth.

Cyrillic alphabet - it was created in the 9th century by two brothers Cyril and Methodius. It is the third ocial alphabet in the EU.

Мартеница [Martenitza] - every year on 1 March we exchange martenitzas to celebrate the upcoming spring. Essentially, these are small pieces of adornment made of red and white thread that symbolise good health and happiness.

National instrument: bagpipe - гайда [gaida].

Bulgaria is the oldest country in Europe that hasn’t changed its name since it was rst established. This happened in 681 AD.

Bulgaria comes third in the list of countries with most valuable archaeological sites discovered on their territories, preceded only by Greece and Italy.

РАКИЯ [Rakia] Rakia - fruit fermented alcohol usually made by grapes, plums or peaches. It goes up to 50-70 degrees when is homemade. So, be ready to drink with Bulgarians :)

ОБЛАК [Oblak] Cloud - Typical summer cocktail. It is made of cooled 50% Mastika and 50% Mentha. You can also try Mentha with milk.

НАЗДРАВЕ [Nazdrave] Cheers - When drinking, Bulgarians like to say “Nazdrave” at least 10 times/per drink.

Tap water is safe to drink.

If you are in Bulgaria, you should denitely taste:

СИРЕНЕ[sirene]Sirene Typical Bulgarian cheese – please, never say to a Bulgarian that our cheese is like the Greek feta. Ours is made of goat , sheep, cow milk or a combination of milk.

КИСЕЛО МЛЯКО [kiselo mlyako] Bulgarian yogurtIt is the best in the world, no doubt. This is thanks to the unique Lactobacillus bulgaricus bacteria used for its production that can only be found in Bulgaria.

ЛЮТЕНИЦА[ljutenitza] Ljutenitza А national relish of Bulgaria, Macedonia and Serbia. The ingredients include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, onion, garlic, black pepper, vegetable oil, sugar and salt.

БАНИЦА[Banitza]BanitzaTraditional Bulgarian food prepared by layering a mixture of whisked eggs and pieces of cheese between lo pastry and then baking it in an oven.
