Due to the ongoing work on Venkatanarayana Road, traf- fic has been made one-way near Natesan Park at night. During the day, the dug-up stretch is separated using barricades. The usable stretch is reduced to a single lane on one side. Venkatanarayana Road is blocked at many places near Natesan Park as foot- paths are being laid on these stretches. Apart from this, Chennai Metro is conducting soil tests at more than 12 places on these stretches. Two escalators are being installed in Nandanam metro station at its entry point on Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar. Commuters are now forced to use the stairs along the long winding passage, built on two-levels below the road, to reach the concourse. According to an official, as many of the stations like AG- DMS, Nandanam, Teynampet, Thousand Lights and LIC are built close to busy junctions with entry points on either side of the road, they also function as pedestrian subways. By install- ing escalators at all entry points, moving around in these stations will be relatively hassle-free for both metro commut- ers and pedestrians. Escalators have already been installed in AG-DMS metro station in front of DMS complex. “This is an entry point used by employees of DMS. We already have one escalator and now we have got another one,” an official said. Soon, escalators will come up at one of the entrances in Saidapet metro station near Saidapet bus stand, and at two entry points that are under construction inThousand Lights and LIC. According to a temple priest, the use of mobile phones distracts devotees as some attempt to take ‘selfies’ around the temple premises and inside the sanctum sanctorum, apart from talking on the phone. He said the mobile phone ban will come into effect only after taking into consideration suggestions and views of the public. If the ban is enforced, mobile deposit and collection centers will be opened near all the entrances for the convenience of the devotees. Vasugi Manivanan (resident of Postal Colony, West Mambalam. By Our Staff ReporterResidents living in narrow

streets now get tanker waterat their doorstep. Metrowaterhas started operating 120 minilorries fitted with 3000-litertanks to provide water for resi-dents living in narrow streets.

At present, nearly 900 lor-ries make over 9,500 trips dailyto supply water to the city.

With resources fast deplet-ing in the city reservoirs, pipedwater supply has been reducedin several areas.

However, residents of nar-row streets and slum pocketshad problems in getting drink-ing water through large tank-ers in areas including T. Nagar,Saidapet, West Mambalam,Tondiarpet, Royapuram,Moggappair, Ambattur,Teynampet, and Thiru Vi KaNagar.

According to a Metrowater

3000-liter tankers ease watersupply to narrow streets

official, the waiting period af-ter making a booking for sup-ply to these narrow streets hascome down from a fortnight tojust over a week.

According to SankarRaman, a resident ofEllaiamman Koil Street, someof the streets off Station Roadare only 20 feet wide. But, dueto encroachments on both sidesof the road, there is no room forbig tankers to enter. They haveto come either early in themorning or late at night. Evenat that time, tanker driversfind it tough to manoeuver dueto autos and small vans parkedon both the sides of the road.

“We will be starting onlinebooking for 2,000 and 3,000liter tankers, besides increas-ing the number of such tank-ers from 120 now to 200. Thiswill help reduce the backlog aswell,” said an official.

NGOs’ help to be sought tohelp bulk waste generators

Greater Chennai Corporation has sought the help of agencies,NGOs and entrepreneurs involved in solid waste managementand recycling to help bulk waste generators like public sectorundertakings, hospitals, educational institutions, high-riseapartment complexes, gated communities, commercialcomplexes, malls, theaters, and restaurants in the city tocompost and recycle waste within their premises.

Interested agencies which are eligible will be empanelledwith the civic body and the bulk waste generators can avail oftheir services, according to the corporation.

The city generates more than 5,250 tonnes of municipal solidwaste a day. According to the solid waste management rulesof 2016, a bulk waste generator is one where waste generationexceeds 100 kg. a day.

“So far, only about 200 bulk waste generators havecomposting units within their premises,” an official said addingthat all bulk waste generators should ensure segregation ofwaste at source, facilitate collection of segregated waste inseparate streams and hand over recyclable material, accordingto the new rules.

This bio-degradable waste must be processed, treated anddisposed of through composting or biomethanation within thepremises as far as possible.

“However, we have noticed that many of these bulk wastegenerators are lacking expertise in treating solid waste,” anofficial said adding that they have planned to empanel wasteprocessing agencies, whose services these bulk wastegenerators can avail of.

The service providers will have to assess the characteristicsof the waste generated at the respective sites and proposeoptimal segregation of generated waste.

They will also be required to propose and implement a planfor a transition to the micro-compost plant or any alternativeprocessing for bio-degradable waste.

According to an official release, any bidder in India or abroadwith relevant qualifications can submit a proposal on solecapacity or as a consortium.

The bidders should have the required technical experienceand should not have been blacklisted by any governmentagency.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORRaja Bather Street-Nair Road junction now a garbage dump

Sir, The stretch of RajaBather Street close to its junc-tion with Dr Nair Road, T.Nagar is in a very bad state.

It has been converted into agarbage dump and passersbyhave converted the shortstretch of the street margininto an open urinal.

There are a number of resi-dential houses nearby and resi-dents cannot stand the foulsmell and are unable to evenopen the windows on this side.

The unhygienic condition isa health hazard and a breed-ing ground for mosquitoes.

I appeal to Chennai Corporation officials to visit the street and take suitable action.Satheesh, 9094763737

Mambalam Times provides useful informationSir, I live in Visakhapatnam and visit West Mambalam once a month to see my mother who

lives in Thambiah Road. My neighbour keeps every week’s copy of Mambalam Times for meto read on my Chennai visits. It is really heartening to see the issues which are, though compact, useful and give a glimpse of the week’s happenings in and around our area and also provide usefulinformation about service providers like plumbers, technicians and others.

The paper will, more or less, serve as a social history of the neighbourhood and can be utilizedby historians for seeking information for their research. R. Sekar, Flat 1, Swati Swarnam,7, Thambiah Road, West Mambalam

Parking woes in Motilal StreetSir, As Motilal Street, T. Nagar is close to Usman Road, many shoppers park their vehicles

on the street, inconveniencing the residents. Often the vehicles are parked haphazardly, causing problems for other motorists and pedestrians. Outsiders park their car for long periods.

Swanky pavements for vendors or pedestrians? Sir, Chennai Corporation has widened and repaired several pavements in the neighbourhood

for the benefit of pedestrians. In some places, the pavements have been beautified withdecorative tiles near the road junctions.

On some pavements on main raids, bollards or barricades have been installed to preventparking of vehicles, especially at road junctions.

But all this effort has gone waste, as the pavements, especially at street corners, serve asa protected and decorated place for roadside vendors and, as usual, there is no action by theauthorities to remove them. The pavements have become out of bounds for pedestrians whoare forced to walk on the road at these busy junctions.

What is the use of spending so much money if the objective is not achieved? P. K.Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments, Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 98402 93321

No system to assess water quality supplied by private tankersSir, As Chennai is facing a severe water crisis, many are forced to buy water from private

tanker operators. It is not known from where the private tanker operators are sourcing water. In the interest of safety and public health, I appeal to Metrowater and Chennai Corporation

to introduce a random/surprise quality checking system for private tanker lorries, and apermanent clearance system at the points from where the tankers draw water. V. S.Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

I appeal to the traffic policeto install ‘No Parking’ sign-boards on the street. V. S.Narayanaswamy, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar
