You may be a winner! Random monthly drawings picked from the hat of New & Renewing Members receive a FREE Blues CD.

Recipient of theKeeping The Blues Alive Award forBlues Organization of the Year 1998

Hello NBN members and friends. I’d like to take a moment to pay a tribute to Rudy Norman, who passed away just recently. Rudy was a long-time member of the NBN and will be greatly missed. Rudy was at many NBN events over the years, and volunteered with a passion. The NBN has made a contribution to the Music Maker Relief Foundation in North Carolina in honor of Rudy.

The NBN has been very busy this summer. There seems to be one great event or blues show after another. The NBN International Blues Challenge at the Jewish Mother was a great success, and we look forward to following the winner through the competition in Memphis during early 2012. The Natchel’ Blues Network co-sponsored a show with the River City Blues Society of Richmond that featured the 2011 IBC winner, the Lionel Young Band. The show was held at J.M. Randall’s in Williamsburg, and was a lot of fun. A big thanks goes out to Herbie Desseyn with the HRB Blues band for getting us involved. I’m sure that everyone is looking forward to the Blues at the Beach festival. The lineup is very exciting! Keep your eyes out for the NBN eBlast that announces upcoming events.

Jerry Carter from the WFOS 88.7 FM “Blues Traffic Jam” has been a huge help to the NBN as he promotes the organization on his radio show regularly. Just recently, Jerry has begun hosting the “Blues Night” at the Terra Restaurant & Bar in Hampton every Monday evening. In addition to featuring national and local acts each week, there are opportunities to showcase yet-to-be discovered talent with an open microphone between some sets. Let’s get together and show Jerry some love and support by heading over to Terra’s.

This issue of the Blues News would like to feature a guitar player and songwriter from South Florida named Scott Henderson. Henderson has been named Guitar World’s # 1 jazz guitarist, and has recordings with the band Tribal Tech, and the Scott Henderson trio.

My favorite Henderson album has to be Tore Down House. The title track of that album features vocalist Thelma Houston, and some of the most incredible blues guitar that I have ever heard. Other great blues albums by Henderson include Dog Party and Well to the Bone. Henderson was influenced by guys like Jimmy Page, Buddy Guy, Ritchie Blackmore and Albert King. With a combination of talent like that, how could you go wrong? Head on over to Birdland Records and pick up those CD’s. If Barry doesn’t have them in stock, he’ll get them for you.

I hope to see you around town at an NBN event in the near future.

SEPT CALENDARJimmy Gordon & CD Review by Ron Parker

Some of you may not be familiar with James “Jimmy” Gordon…one of this world’s truly unique characters and a man I cherish as a friend. Jimmy is a great player, performer, and a master harmonica technician. To date, he and Richard Sleigh are the only two harmonica master technicians who are part of Joe Filisko’s guild of harmonica customizing. Among my most prized possessions are two sets of harps that Jimmy built for me just a few years ago.

Jimmy has played harmonica with Rock, Roots, and Blues musicians and songwriters such as Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Spooner Oldham & Dan Penn, NRBQ, Jimmy Johnson, Eddie Shaw & the Wolf Gang, Luther “Guitar Jr.” Johnson, and more. Jimmy has toured in the past with J.J. Cale. He has played harmonica in all types of venues from honkytonks to Carnegie Hall (with J.J. Cale) and all types of clubs, performing with diatonic and chromatic harmonicas.

When Jimmy was finishing the work on my set of Marine Band custom harps, he shared the devastating news that he had been diagnosed with MS.

At first it affected his fine motor skills and even his eyesight…both of which are needed to do the extremely delicate work of customizing harmonicas. Jimmy’s technical work may not be as fast as it was before MS, but I’m happy to report that he has improved and was in attendance last week at SPAH in Virginia Beach, VA…walking with a cane, but joking and playing just like old times. Someone told me that on one particular night, Magic Dick told Jimmy that he played “Whammer Jammer” better than Magic did himself. I believe it, because I stood beside him last week while he leaned on his cane and blew the hell out of that number while jamming with Mike Conover, his buddy from younger years. Jimmy is determined to overcome MS and has just finished a CD project to that avail.

The CD is called MS Blows. Half the proceeds from the sale of this CD go to research for the cure of Multiple Sclerosis - MS. Every blues lover needs to buy this album…not just to support Jimmy or MS research, but because it is a dynamite CD and is chock full of a very eclectic selection of tracks. Most of the tracks were donated to this project by many harmonica and music greats. You find offerings by Jimmy himself, as well as The Nighthawks, Charlie McCoy, Kim Wilson, Joe Filisko, Rick Estrin and others. Perhaps the last short, recorded cut by Paul Butterfield has been added to this CD by Mickey Raphael, the guy who had the idea for this project.

There is something on this CD for everyone, which is why I intend to buy several copies for Christmas presents for my blues loving friends. Buying this CD will be both good for you and for the cause. Let’s pray MS is wiped out in our lifetime.

TO ORDER $20 will get you a CD and shipping. Order at: GORDON CUSTOM HARMONICA (MS BLOWS), P.O. Box 461, Bellows Falls, VT 05101.

CD REVIEWS By Jack CampbellTAB BENOITMedicineTelarc 32823-02www.tabbenoit.comwww.concordmusicgroup.com

As my friend Nancy Hoffman says, “We gotta tip y’all!” And our tip is this - Medicine is an awesome CD and you should go out and buy it right now. Just take a glance at the line up of top shelf musicians: Tab Benoit - guitar & vocals; Anders Osborne - (you may remember him from the Bayou Boogaloo) guitar & backup vocals; Corey Duplechin, Ivan Neville - (having a Neville

brother on your latest release always validates it) Hammond B3 organ; and the great Creole, Cajun, Zydeco music giant Michael Doucet on fiddle & vocals. Yes, we are in the company of greatness here.

“Medicine,” the title cut, just rocks out. Even my 13-year old and his friends like listening to it while rolling down the highway in the grocery-gettin’-soccer-mom van. “A Whole Lotta Soul” is a well, soulful look at what’s happening to the Delta and surrounding Bayou these days. “Broke and Lonely” laments a man that probably played too many losing Bourre hands. I feel your pain, man.

“Can’t You See” is a classic New Orleans style slow blues about a man that just lost his true love. “Next to Me” features some handy guitar work along with some devotional lyrics. “Mudboat Melissa” has that classic Cajun beat bolstered by Doucet’s beautiful fiddling. I think they are actually singing about a boat and not a woman on this cut.

JACKIE SCOTT & THE HOUSEWRECKERSGoing to the WestsideSelf-Releasedwww.jackiescottandthehousewreckers.com

Jackie Scott is a hard working woman whose music career also revolves around her day job. She does not tour as much due to this and her fame is perhaps being held back by this. She is an outstanding vocalist and songwriter who emotes both with her exemplary performances and her well-used pen. If you have not listened to this woman and her band yet, you are missing out on some great stuff.

I first heard Jackie at last year’s Blues Blast awards and after listening to her first album I was entranced with her music. A great first album is also a tough act to follow, but Ms. Scott’s sophomore release is more than up to the task. Joined on three tracks by the great Eddie Shaw, what really amazed me is that I preferred to listen to Jackie on her own. Sure, Eddie’s sax and vocals add greatly to the mix but I found myself even more enamored with the songs he wasn’t on. She was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition for “Mississippi Hook,” where Shaw does backing vocals, and has a track written by Shaw (“Chicken House Shorty”), but the standout tracks here for me are the opening track “Broke as Dick’s Hatband” and the soulfully stirring “I’m Tired.” She performed the former at last year’s Blues Blast Awards show and I was and remain impressed. (Editors Note: Jackie Scott won the Blues Blast Award last year for Best New Artist Debut Recording: with her CD, How Much Woman Can You Stand?.)

Jackie sings and talks to us about the plight of poverty in a truly bluesy way. “I’m Tired” shows us some really expressive talents and speaks volumes about her emotions and relationships; it was certainly and easily my favorite and the best track on the disc (despite the renowned Mr. Shaw not being on it).

Shaw also appears on the title track and “Smooth Taste revisited” and his presence is of course huge. Scott dedicates the CD to him. But Jackie really doesn’t need help; she wrote eight of the songs, which range from amusing (“Pink Cadillac,” a sappy yet fun song about her dream car) to the gut wrenching (as noted above). She can get down and dirty, be uplifting, soulful, playful or whatever she needs to be. There are many female vocalists out there who can carry a tune or sing the blues with great pride. What Jackie does is even more impressive--her performances are at a level above most others. Couple that with the ability to write super songs that are in all of her wheelhouses and we have a talent the blues world needs to learn more of.

Her band is solid behind her. Tommie Fisher’s keyboard work is well done, Mark Hopkins is admirable on guitar, Avelino Pitts on sax is powerful, and the back line of Dave Holland and Darren Simons on bass and drums are excellent. Eddie Shaw is notable in his performances as are the folks who join him. But the talent I wanted to listen to here was Jackie--she is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of the blues. Run out and buy this and her earlier CD How Much Woman Can You Stand? If you want to hear what the future of female blues vocalists should and will sound like!!

CD REVIEWS By Brian “The Bluesman” BeachumBlues DanceNow Blues Dance is much more than just dancing to Blues music. Since Blues itself is not only a genre, but a feeling, a style, a noun, a verb, an expression. It is unlike any other dance style. Blues music itself dates back to the late 1800s historically deriving from work songs from the Southern states. Turning it into its own American folk music style with playing, singing, and dancing about the happenings of the times. Good or bad. Blues is a style of music that has tested the trials of time. Blues Dance is a term used to describe a whole family of dance styles that has had over a century to be redeveloped, reformed, and reshaped into today’s dance. It is also a reflection the listener’s natural reaction to Blues music. It may just start with the tapping of a foot, clapping hands, or simply moving rhythmically by yourself. But Blues Dancers take that natural movement and express intensity, and their musical and emotional interpretation by putting the body into motion. ART IMITATING LIFE IMITATING ART Blues music is a reflection of one’s perception on life’s experiences and feelings which has the ability to connect to pretty much every person listening. Experiences ranging from love lost & found, financial hardships, spirituality, sadness, celebration, dreams, and aspirations. Each one of us can connect to some part of Blues. Blues Dance puts these experiences from the music and put that into their dance. Dancers often demonstrate the entire range of human emotions each one of us experience in life. When you see Blues Dancers on the dance floor, it is much more than just dancing a set pattern. It is the connection between the dancers and also the connection to the music. Blues can express or release what one is feeling at the moment. More important, it’s what the music is says to each person. Some hear happiness, some sadness, some passion, and some joy. But most important, Blues Dance is a dynamic partnership between the dancers and to the music. GET OUT & DANCE Social Dancing in general is a fun form of exercise that allows you to get out of the house, meet other people, spend some time doing fun exercise, and make new friends. But Blues Dancing is totally unlike other dance styles out there. Dancing to Blues Music is all about real life - the good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between. Blues Dancing is the ultimate expression of one’s being. One thing is for certain, Blues Dance is a natural expression when listening to Blues music.

As long as there is Blues music, there will be Blues Dance.

M.S.G. The Acoustic Blues TrioBe Careful What you Asked For...Self-Releasedwww.acousticbluesmsg.com

M.S.G.-The Acoustic Blues Trio’s latest release, a CD-EP, is an eclectic collection of acoustic blues styles to please most any blues listener. The stand-by blues traditional tune that’s been covered by a many a folk, “Angel From Montgomery,” sounds as

sweet as ever played by this trio; with some dynamic vocals by Resa Gibbs, fine harmonica by Jackie Merritt, and fine guitar work by Miles Spicer. “Charlie Stone,” the first tune on the CD, is a toe-tapper, with Resa on a wicked kazoo. Now, that’s an instrument you don’t hear everyday on most blues CDs, but this isn’t your everyday blues group, believe me. The tune “Do You See Me Now?” digs a bit deeper into the soul and explores the viewpoint of the homeless. “My Little One” gives another opportunity to give a good workout to Resa’s vocal talent. The last track on the CD gives us a good ol’ tent revival experience with “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah.” This one works out the whole trio’s talent – Jackie’s harp, Miles’ guitar, and Resa’s vocal work. Praise the Lord and pass the Hennessy!

This short-track CD shows how a band can release new material without having to wait for a full commitment release before bringing it to their fans. This is some of the best material M.S.G has cut in a long time and I’m glad they did not wait to bring this forward to the public. Don’t be careful. You should go get this now!

Hadden SayersHard DollarBlue Corn Music - 677967110129www.haddensayers.com

Hadden Sayers’ new CD in more than a decade, Hard Dollar is a powerhouse of Texas blues guitar and just good guitar work in general. Soul singer Ruthie Foster convinced Sayers to come out of retirement and get back in the studio, and we

thank her for that. Foster cuts a sweet duet with Hadden and Sayers throws in several great boogie-woogie numbers to keep this CD jumpin’.

This CD is filled with true American blues. The first track, “Take Me Back To Texas,” gets the road trip rolling with a jumping beat. “Back to the Blues” features a duet with the renowned Ruthie Foster. “Lap of Luxury” gets to show Hadden’s funky side. “Flat Black Automobile” continues the Texas road trip. “Crush on You” brings on the good ‘ol boogie-woogie, and “Hippie Getaway” is just too much fun to miss. The last cut on the CD, “Money Shot,” is an instrumental groovin’ powerhouse reminiscent of a Duke Robillard tune.

The 13 tracks on Hard Dollar take on a Texas guitar road trip with the top down in the back seat along with some Sweet Texas Girls, a few road trips, a trip to a hot hotel, and on a Hippie Getaway! You even get to make some great stops along the way. This is definitely a road trip CD to add to your collection for some great Texas-style blues guitar. Give up a few of your hard earned bucks and pick up Hadden Sayers’ new CD Hard Dollar.

Gaye AdegbalolaGaye Todd was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She graduated as valedictorian of the then-segregated Walker-Grant High School. She finished Boston University with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Prior to becoming a teacher, she worked as a technical writer for TRW Systems, a biochemical researcher at Rockefeller University, and a bacteriologist at Harlem Hospital. She has a Master’s degree in Educational Media (with a concentration in photography) from Virginia State University. In the early ‘70s, she began her teaching career as an educator in the Fredericksburg City Public School system for 18 years, and was honored as Virginia State Teacher of the Year in 1982. Throughout her teaching career, she directed Harambee 360º Experimental Theater. Ms. Adegbalola moonlighted as a musician. As a founding member of Saffire – the Uppity Blues Women, she became a full-time performer. She has toured nationally and internationally, and has won numerous awards including the prestigious Blues Music Award (formerly the W.C. Handy Award – the Grammy of the blues industry). As of summer 2011, Adegbalola has 13 CDs in national distribution, including 3 on her own label, Hot Toddy Music. Gaye composes, sings and plays acoustic guitar, slide guitar, and harmonica. She currently performs as a solo artist, in duos with pianist Roddy Barnes and guitarist Lisa Lim, and fronts the electric blues band Ms. A & the Freedom Band. She is the mother of son, Juno Lumumba Kahlil.

Mac ArnoldMac Arnold is a favorite musical son of the Upstate region of South Carolina. Mac lives in Pelzer, South Carolina where, at the age of ten, he got his first taste of the blues when he learned to play his brother Leroy’s guitar, which was made from an old gasoline can. After deciding to pursue a professional music career, Mac joined the Charles Miller group, and in 1965, he moved to Chicago to work with recording artist/saxophonist A.C. Reed. In late 1966, at age 24, Mac joined the Muddy Waters Band and helped shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. His storied music career included a stint from 1964 until 1972 during which he played with ninety percent of Blues and R&B entertainers including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Otis Redding, James Brown, Grace Slick & Jefferson Airplane, and Sam Cooke. Mac today is serving up a mess of Blues with his own band, Mac Arnold & Plate Full O Blues. The film documentary NOTHING TO PROVE: The Story of Mac Arnold’s Return to the Blues was nominated for best DVD at the 2011 Blues Music Awards. His latest CD release, Country Man, produced by Bob Margolin, is now out on the VizzTone Label Group.

Matt HillMatt Hill lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, but he was born a little east of there, in the land of pigmeat and tall tobacco. He started playing guitar when he was 12, picking up some Creedence, Dick Dale, and early Surf Music. Matt soon started digging deeper into Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll, beginning to mix it all together into his own thing. He started going to blues jams, where he met drummer Chuck Cotton. He knew Chuck had played with (Muddy Waters Band alumnus) Bob Margolin. Matt started a blues band with Chuck, and they won the local competition that would send them to the 2005 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Back in Greensboro, Matt played with local blues icon Max Drake & the Buzzkillz, and sat in with Bob Margolin. Soon Matt was joining Bob Margolin on tour, playing with the likes of Blues heroes Carey Bell, Hubert Sumlin, Pinetop Perkins, and Nappy Brown. Matt developed a totally uninhibited, ferociously raving stage presence that harkens back to the heydays of Howlin’ Wolf, Jerry Lee Lewis and Nappy Brown. Matt received the 2011 Blues Music Award for “Best New Artist Debut” for On the Floor (VizzTone).

Michael BurksGuitarist/vocalist/songwriter Michael “Iron Man” Burks stands tall as a major contemporary blues figure. With a nickname earned by his hours-long, intensely physical performances, fearsome guitar attack, tough, smoky vocals and the thousands of miles logged behind the wheel of his touring van, Burks is a modern blues hero. Nobody in today’s blues world successfully bridges searing electric guitar blues with unbridled rock and roll energy like Burks. Even though he has been playing music since he was a child, it was the release of Make It Rain, his Alligator Records debut in 2001, that brought Burks well-deserved national recognition and made him one of the blues world’s fastest-rising stars. His 2003 follow-up, I Smell Smoke, continued his upward trajectory. With inspiration from Albert King, Freddie King and Albert Collins, Burks’ sound and style are all his own. His latest CD is Iron Man. Produced by Burks and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer and fueled by Burks’ hard-driving road band, Iron Man is an electrifying slice of emotional, rocked-out blues. Dedicated fans around the country and in Europe, Australia and South America already know and appreciate the sweat, passion and intensity he pours out each night. A constant string of performances at premier festivals and clubs continues to add even more word-of-mouth fuel to the fire. Burks’ deep, soul-infused music and undeniable charisma make him an overwhelming force in the blues.

Lurrie BellLurrie Bell is a blues guitarist and singer. His father was renowned blues harmonica player Carey Bell. Bell started playing guitar at the age of six, and in his teens he polished his skills playing with the legends of Chicago blues scene including Eddy Clearwater, Big Walter Horton and Eddie Taylor. In the mid 1970s, he joined Koko Taylor’s Blues Machine and toured with the band for four years. He made his recording debut in 1977 appearing on his father’s album Heartaches and Pain and on Eddie C. Campbell’s King of the Jungle. It was around that time that he formed The Sons of Blues with musicians including Billy Branch on harmonica. Three tracks of the band’s recordings were featured in the Alligator Records compilation Living Chicago Blues Vol. 3 released in 1978. In 1989 he released his first solo effort, Everybody Wants To Win, on JSP Records. In 1995 he recorded Mercurial Son, his first of several from the Delmark label. A series of albums followed thereafter, and he started to perform more frequently in the Chicago club and blues festival circuits. Bell is featured on Getting’ Up - Live at Buddy Guy’s Legends, Rosa’s and Lurrie’s Home, a 2007 CD and DVD release from Delmark, where he plays with his father Carey. He also appears on the 2009 release Live at Chan’s: Combo Platter No. 2 (with Nick Moss & The Flip Tops).

Sherman RobinsonSherman Robertson, born October 27, 1948, in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, is a blues guitarist, songwriter and singer who has been described as “one part zydeco, one part swamp blues, one part electric blues and one part classic rhythm & blues.” Raised in Houston, TX, at the age of 13, equipped with a cheap guitar purchased by his father, he started playing the songs previously performed by Freddie King and Floyd London. As he lived close to the Duke/Peacock recording studio, Robertson acquainted himself with some of the musicians who recorded there. At the same time, in his late teens, Robertson played in a band in various bars of his Fifth Ward, Houston neighborhood. In 1982, Clifton Chenier heard Robertson’s band playing at the Crosstown Blues Festival. Robertson moved back to Louisiana, learned to play slide guitar, and toured for several years in the 1980s with Chenier. After Chenier’s death, Robertson played with Rockin’ Dopsie, appearing on his Crowned Prince Of Zydeco album (1986), and Terrance Simien & the Mallet Playboys, before going solo. Robertson’s guitar work also appeared on Paul Simon’s Graceland album. Robertson’s I’m the Man (1994) was the first release on the Code Blue label and was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award. His follow-up recording was Here & Now (1995). The record label folded and Robertson re-appeared in 1998 on the independent label, Audioquest, with his next offering, Going Back Home. In November 2005 he released Guitar Man – Live.

Joanne Shaw TaylorJoanne Shaw Taylor has become a bona fide force on the international music scene. She took home Best Female Vocalist honors at the 2010 British Blues Awards, has supported tours by Joe Bonamassa and Eric Sardinas and impressed legions of fans in the U.S., Europe and Australia with her high-energy attack. Hailing from the British Midlands, Taylor was discovered at age 16 by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, who recruited her to play guitar in his side-project D.U.P. Tours. Taylor then spent several years developing her craft as a guitarist and, in particular, as a singer and writer of original material. She signed to Ruf Records in 2008 and recorded her debut, White Sugar, with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines--a direct link to two of her greatest guitar heroes, Albert Collins and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The album garnered a nomination as Best New Artist Debut at the 2010 Blues Music Awards. Following 18 months of intense touring, Taylor returned to Gaines’ studio outside of Memphis in 2010 to record her follow-up disc, Diamonds in the Dirt. Increasingly in demand at clubs and festivals throughout North America, Taylor recently set up a new home base in Detroit, Michigan. Still just 25, Taylor has already taken the first few hurdles on the way to a long and successful career.

Grady ChampionGrady Champion was the 2010 International Blues Challenge winner. A blues singer and harmonica player from Canton, Mississippi, he started performing at the age of eight in the Church Choir where his love for music began. In 1994, Grady won the McDonald’s Music Fest with his performance of “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues” and brought the audience of 10,000 to their feet. Through the years he has developed into not only a great singer and harmonica player, but also an innovative songwriter and producer. Grady has been favorably compared to the legendary Sonny Boy Williamson, and people can hear exactly why on his Shanachie debut Payin’ for My Sins, which was released in August 1999. In Blues Access, Dave McIntyre wrote “On Saturday’s midnight cruise, I was immediately drawn to the upper deck, where I found Hawkeye Herman and T.J. Wheeler, two great pickers, engaged with a younger harpist from Mississippi named Grady Champion, exchanging songs and doing requests. Grady’s voice not only made me think of Robert Johnson, but the way he worked the crowd seemed as though Johnson’s, or Luther Allison’s, fire and raw sense of what the audience needs was being born inside him.” Champion’s new CD, Dreamin’, features ten originals. Backed by Zac Harmon’s band, Champion’s still in fine form and his songwriting is sharp as ever.

Homemade Jamz Blues BandRyan Perry (19) – vocals, guitars; Kyle Perry (16) – bass; Taya Perry (12) – drums. HJBB started in Baumholder, Germany when their father returned from military service in Korea. Young Ryan found a Stratocaster copy among dad’s bags and wanted it. When the family relocated to Tupelo, the passion stayed with him. Returning home, Ryan, now 11, dove head first into the blues. Two years later, little brother Kyle, then nine years old, wanted in on the action and switched to bass. When an unrelated drummer didn’t work out, seven-year-old Taya wanted to give it a shot. Two months later she was providing the beat behind Ryan and Kyle. They won the 3rd Annual MS Delta Blues Society of Indianola’s Blues Challenge (2006), and were the youngest band ever to compete in the International Blues Challenge (2007), taking 2nd in a field of 157 bands. Fred Litwin, president of NorthernBlues Music, was a judge for the event. Fred called HJBB and announced he was keen to make them the youngest blues band to sign with a major record label. The band recorded Pay Me No Mind at home, over three days in January 2008. The trio exudes nothing but confidence and attitude as they sing of betrayal, love, hard times and other bad things gone down as if they’ve lived a life rich in strife. Their latest CD, on their own label, is The Game (2010).

H.M. Johnson BandTogether for almost nineteen years, this band’s success has come from hard work and dedication. The group is under the leadership of Henry (H.M.) Johnson, a highly respected and experienced music veteran, a superb writer, musician and sound technician. H.M. Johnson began playing over 40 years ago. The first recording that he ever bought was by Chuck Berry, which he quickly wore out. Soon after, he began listening to Wes Montgomery, Albert King, Albert Collins, Pat Martino and B.B. King. These influences have directed Henry over the years of his life and have brought him to where he now stands. H.M. Johnson has successfully recorded two solo releases entitled Feel It and Everybody Wants Control of You and is currently working on a new project. Henry also contributed guitar tracks to CBS after school TV specials as well as work with the CBN cable network and has received high praise from Guitar Player Magazine. In his career, he has toured and performed in many countries and several states in the United States with artists such as Delbert McClinton, national recording jazz trumpeter Tom Brown and notable other recording artists. These three talented entertainers serve up a savory mix of diverse musical styles, pleasing the most discriminating palate.

Mike Lucci BandThe Mike Lucci Band brings together decades of musical experience and passion for the Blues to form one of Richmond’s newest and finest Chicago Style Rockin’ Rhythm and Blues bands. From their slow sultry ballads, to their fast shakin’ shuffles and tight rhythmic rumba style blues, this dynamic band will have you dancing away. They were the winner of the Natchel’ Blues Network’s 2010 IBC competition and represented them in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge held between February 1-5, 2011. Band members include Shelly Thiss - vocals, tambourine & claves; Rick Manson - harp & vocals; Ron Winston - lead guitar, rhythm guitar & vocals; Bob Stufflebeem - drums & various other noises; Mike Lucci - bass guitar; and Steve Eddleton - Security, Guitar Tech, and Bus Driver. CD REVIEWS By Brian “The Bluesman” Beachum

Stony Plain35 YearsStony Plain SPCD 1354www.stonyplainrecords.com

Stony Plain Records is a Canadian independent record label, established in 1976 by Holger Petersen, which specializes in country, folk and blues music genres. Every five years or so, they release a collection of the highlights of some of their artists in a double-CD release. This year, it’s the thirty-five year roll around and it’s a good one. The two-CD and one DVD package contains one CD concentrating on songwriters and on Blues, Jazz, R&B, and Swing artists. I’m only reviewing the

Blues CD in this go around, but the entire package is worth picking up.

CD TWO, the Blues, Jazz, R&B, and Swing one of the bunch, is crammed full of gems from the stable of Stony Plain artists. Some you might know, and some you might not, but should. Jerry Carter and I played this on the “Bee Bop Boogie Blues Review” on WFOS-FM 88.7 a few weeks ago and ran the entire hour on just this CD. The twenty cuts are that good. It’s one you can just stick in the player and let roll. With “Stomp the Blues” by Duke Robillard on cut one followed by “Black Widow Spider” by Joe Louis Walker, on to “I’m Torn Down” - a live cut by the late, great Jeff Healy, the list of great tunes just never gives up.

Some lesser known, but still great blues numbers include “Teardrop on Your Letter” by Amos Garrett & the Gene Taylor Band, “Ain’t Broke and Ain’t Hungry” by King Biscuit Boy, and “You Missed A Good Man” by Robert Nighthawk. This collection of wonderful blues tracks is sure to please any blues fan. The bonus DVD is a real treat with videos including Jeff Healy, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl. This is a set you’ll be glad to add to your collection.

On August 14th, the NBN’s board of directors, committees, and events leadership began the process of its first strategic plan. Facilitated by management consultant Frank Urban, the leaders of your organization engaged in the first stages of identifying opportunities to strengthen the NBN by providing its members with quality events, services and relationships.

As the NBN improves its processes and the deliverables to its members, an enhanced reputation in the area will follow as will the improved experience of its volunteers, as together we fulfill the organization’s mission statement. Frank Urban has been very generous to donate his time and skill sets to the organization, so if you see him at a Natchel’ Blues Network event, be sure to buy him a beer. Frank can be reached at [email protected].

Band Review The Trim Kings by Jimmy WilliamsThe Trim Kings are Virginia’s premier Outlaw Blues, Roadhouse Country and Rocking Jam band. Featuring a twin-guitar attack and pumping rhythm section, a Trim Kings performance conjures up what a jam session with Hendrix, Haggard, Trower and B.B. King at Howlin’ Wolf’s house might sound like. These guys play anything they want - any way they want.

Guitar guru Jimmy Williams fronts the band with an eclectic style that encompasses influences like Frank Marino, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, avant-garde jazz and Indian classical music. Included by Coltrane biographer and jazz historian Lewis Porter in the Encyclopedia of Jazz Musicians, Williams toured the world with the Bluzblasters and appears on numerous blues and

jazz recordings. In addition to the Trim Kings, he continues to perform with the classic hard rock band Motorpsychic, the Almost Famous Band, the avant-garde jazz group Sproing and continues to make guest appearances with the southern rock group the Rhythm Pigs, who he played and toured with for several years.

On bass guitar is Glenn “Chickenhead” Foster. Chickenhead lays down the solid foundation the Trim Kings are built on. Jimmy and Chickenhead have developed a sense of musical telepathy that comes from playing together for years and which enables the band to launch into any direction they feel. Also a veteran of the Bluzblasters, he plays with Triple Shot,

the Rhythm Pigs and the area’s premier Who tribute band, Who’s Next.

Kevin Kerwin (Kevvie) rounds out the rhythm section on drums and shares the vocals with Jimmy. Influenced by Butch Trucks and Jaimoe from the Allman Brothers Band, Kevvie is an interactive musician who grooves with the bass while following the solos wherever they lead. He cut his teeth with the Exceptions and Southern Plus and still performs with the modern country group Final Notice. Every band needs some “eye candy” and Kevvie feels that in every band he’s in, he is it!

Jeff Karr is the other guitarist in the twin guitar line-up. Influenced by Rick Derringer, Billy Gibbons, Buddy Guy and other greats, Jeff brings a boogie-rock vibe to the band. Jamming together since 2007 has helped Jimmy and Jeff develop their interplay to a high level. Jeff also plays in the band More Cowbell and is president of the Natchel’ Blues Network, Tidewater’s blues society.

With their debut CD, tentatively titled Laying ‘Em Down, due out late fall of 2011, the Trim Kings are the band to hear. Whether soaring through Robin Trower’s “Too Rolling Stoned,” a Merle Haggard classic, a Howlin’ Wolf rare gem, a swinging jump blues or a Trim Kings original, these guys are the best at what they do!

CHICAGO - David “Honeyboy” Edwards, the “Last of the Great Mississippi Delta Bluesmen,” whose roots stretched back to blues legend Robert Johnson, has died. Longtime manager Michael Frank says Edwards died of congestive heart failure Monday, August 29th in his Chicago apartment. He was about to turn 96.

Born in 1915 in Shaw, Mississippi, Edwards left home at age 14 to travel with bluesman Big Joe Williams. His father, a guitarist and violinist, bought his son a guitar from a plantation worker. Edwards played with a number of noted musicians, including Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Muddy Waters. Among Edwards’ hit songs were “Long Tall Woman Blues,” “Gamblin’ Man” and “Just Like Jesse James.”

Edwards won a 2008 Grammy for traditional blues album and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2010.
