CMP’s First Shot Ceremony Observes WWII Battles, Triumphs of Decorated OlympianBy Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer

CAMP PERRY, OH – The Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) ceremonial First Shot Ceremony on July 7, 2014 at Rodriguez Range in Camp Perry, OH, celebrated more than the beginnings of the National Matches – it also commemorated the sacrifices of America’s Greatest Genera-tion. The date of the ceremony coincidentally fell on the day two significant World War II battles transpired, sparking the need to honor the overlapping historical moments through words, sights and reenactments.

Exactly 70 years ago, on July 7, 1944, American mili-tary personnel were active in both the European and Pacific theatres during World War II. That day in Normandy, France, U.S. forces were advancing upon the town of Saint Lo in an attempt to liberate it from the Germans. In another part of the world, that same day, U.S. forces resisted the largest banzai charge of the Pacific War on the island of Saipan.

With Sherman tanks battling for more than three weeks to free Saint Lo, the U.S. 29th Infantry, with the help of the 30th and 35th Divisions, infiltrated and ran off the German troops. On Saipan, the Japanese engaged the U.S. Army and Marine Units, wounding and killing some 650 soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 105th Infantry Regiment. However, with fierce resistance, Saipan was officially under U.S. control two days later.

Equipment similar to that used in each battle were on static display during the First Shot Ceremony, including a World War II AMTRAC – an amphibious beach landing craft, on loan from Tom Price of Bowling Green, OH. The vehicle was used in the Clint Eastwood film, “Flags of Our Fathers”, and was the same type used during the Battle of Saipan.

Other vintage vehicles used during the battles, such as an M4 Sherman Tank, were mobilized as the crowd watched in awe. The tank, known as “Thunderbolt,” proudly and confidently rolled down the gravel road between Rodriguez and Petrarca ranges, followed by the Toledo-made Willy’s Jeeps to complete the ground parade.

Thunderbolt was present at the ceremony courtesy of the Allen County Museum and Historical Society in Lima, OH, while the Jeeps were on loan from the Firelands Military Vehicle Group.

As the vehicles patrolled the grounds towards the stands, the crowd looked to the skies as the aerial show began. A Navy TBM Avenger torpedo bomber gracefully buzzed through the cloudy skies, trailed by a B-25 medium-range bomber, “Yankee Warrior.” Both planes made a booming entrance as they cascaded through the air above.

A pair of World War II German Flak Guns, from the Liberty Aviation Museum and private owner Chris Weiss, rat-ta-tat-tatted as the planes jetted through the clouds, simulating an anti-aircraft resistance to the bombers.

The torpedo bomber is owned by Charlie Cartledge and was flown from Port Clinton’s Liberty Aviation Museum. Yankee Warrior hails from the Yankee Aviation Museum and was flown from Willow Run Airport in Belleville, MI.

The wind from the blustery day howled as the ground and aerial performances met to reenact a World War II raid. Reenactors in authentic military helmets and uniforms rode tall in the vehicles as the planes flew overhead. Carefully placed pyrotechnic bombs and controlled smoke exploded alongside the range berms, simulating a true air invasion.

Once the planes made their passes and the ground troop applied its resistance, the crowd roared and once again drew their attention to the center of the ceremony field as the presentation of the colors began. The CMP was honored and privileged to have the American flag that flies over Camp Perry for the duration of the 2014 National Matches hand-carried by two lives that were personally touched by the happenings of World War II.

Mr. Jack Price, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II who served both at the Normandy Invasion

The CMP was honored to have World War II veteran Jack Price deliver the colors. Price was present at the invasion of Normandy and also served in the South Pacific.

Gary Anderson showed perfect poise as he delivered the ceremonial First Shot to kick off the National Matches.

National Trophy Rifle and Pistol MatchesThe National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches are the annual U. S. national championship in service pistol and service rifle shooting. The National Trophy Matches were established by federal law in 1903, are still conducted under the statutory authority of the U. S. Code (Title 36 USC § 40725-40727) and are now governed by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Shooters from all over the U. S., civilian and military, test their skills and compete to determine the nation’s best service pistol and rifle shooters. To fulfill the CMP’s statutory responsibility to “instruct citizens in marksmanship,” the National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches are open to all shooters regardless of skill level. Beginners compete and learn while shooting side by side with champions. The tradition of the matches and their competitions for prestigious national trophies celebrate marksmanship excellence and provide incentives to develop individual marksmanship skills, equipment and a national competition infrastructure. The CMP National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches are held in conjunction with the NRA National Rifle and Pistol Champion-ships through a partnership between the two organizations. The Ohio National Guard and U. S. Army Reserves also provide vital support for the matches. The CMP National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches and the NRA National Rifle and Pistol Championships are collectively known as the NATIONAL MATCHES.

First Shot Ceremony Continued

and later in the South Pacific confidently walked across the ceremony field as the audience respectfully praised him with applause. Mr. Price handed off the folded colors to Mrs. Susie Charlton – the daughter of the late U.S. Marine Raider PFC Robert Lano, of Port Clinton. Mr. Lano fought in the Battle of Saipan. Mrs. Charlton marched the flag to the pole for the color guards to slowly hoist into the air.

As the flag flapped in the breeze, the 122nd Army Band played the National Anthem. After distinguished guests were acknowledged, the First Shot Speaker, Gary Anderson, was introduced to the crowd. Anderson is known as one of the best shooters in American history, making his presence at the First Shot Ceremony something truly memorable for all in at-tendance.

Anderson began his marksmanship career in the fields of Nebraska as a boy, eventually moving on to become a mem-ber of the elite U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, GA, in 1959. As his skills flourished and improved, he went on to produce two Olympic gold medals, seven World Championships, six World Records and 16 National Championships. No American has ever won more three-position rifle titles than Gary Anderson.

As Director of Civilian Marksman-ship Emeritus, Anderson continues to influence juniors in shooting sports in the United States and around the world. Un-der his direction, the CMP installed elev-

en new events to the National Matches, helping to increase the participation from 2,250 to 5,000, as well as expanding the opportunities for eager competitors.

In 2012, he was awarded the Inter-national Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Olympic Order. The Order is the highest award given by the IOC and is awarded to individuals for distinguished contributions to the Olym-pic Movement.

On July 7, 2014, the new Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center was dedicated in Anderson’s honor. The cen-ter, located at Camp Perry, houses class-rooms and a world-class air rifle range for the future development of junior marks-men everywhere.

For the ceremony, Anderson dusted off a rifle from his personal collection that was used to win two NRA National High-power Rifle Championships, one NRA National Long Range Rifle Champion-ship, three President’s Rifle matches and many National match trophies. It was also used to shoot the national record target (1971, 200 yards standing, 200-15x).

As Anderson stood behind the bench that held the ceremonial First Shot rifle,

he slowly but-toned and latched his shooting jacket and placed his ear muffs on his head. Photogra-phers gathered to his left and right, anticipat-ing the incred-ible photo opportunity of the honored guest firing his

celebrated rifle. He lifted the sights to his eye, aligned the shot with the ceremonial target downrange and pulled the trigger. A pyrotechnical explosion burst the target into pieces as the crowd cheered.

Though the CMP traditionally offers the ceremonial First Shot rifle to the First Shot Speaker, this year, it was the Speaker who offered the rifle to the CMP. The donated rifle will be on permanent display within the Gary Anderson CMP Competi-tion Center.

The CMP presented Anderson a gran-ite paver with his name and the First Shot date engraved upon it. The paver will be placed in his honor at the new CMP Tal-ladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama – currently under construction.

After Anderson returned to his seat, the 122nd Army Band raised their in-struments and began to play the Armed Forces Salute. One by one, veterans and current military service men and women stood as their branch’s salute was played. Once the final note played, a resounding boom echoed throughout the ranges as the Sherman tank fired two volleys towards Lake Erie.

And so, with pomp, circumstance, honorable guests and many pyrotechni-cal explosions, the 2014 National Tro-phy Rifle and Pistol Matches officially opened. Good luck to all participants, and enjoy the communal and competitive excitement the season brings!

Service Pistol Warm-Up, EIC Matches Prime Competitors for 2014 National Trophy Pistol Match Season

4

CAMP PERRY, OH – The 2014 National Trophy Pistol Match Season began with a little stretching of the mind and loosening of the competitive muscles as the Pistol Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) and Service Pistol Warm-Up Matches readied competitors for the week ahead.

SAFS was held on July 7 to a class of 305 new and experienced shooters. During the school, participants receive basic instruction on firing practices, competition skills, range firing and safety. The Depart-ment of Defense first conducted SAFS as part of the National Matches at Camp Perry in 1918, and the course has been a staple ever since.

Members of the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine and Navy Active, as well as the National Guard and Reserve shooting teams assist students during the course. Their attention to detail, knowledge and expe-rience make them some of the most qualified instructors in the country.

“These instructors are way better than what I had 30, 40 years ago in the Army,” said Jack Turner, 72, of Sebastian, FL. “My instructor here knew so much. He could talk your ear off with everything he knew. It was really excellent.”

At the conclusion of classroom training, students made their ways out to the range for live firing practice. All participants then have the op-portunity to follow a true Course of Fire in an M9 Pistol Excellence-In-Competition (EIC) Match. Marksmen participate in EIC Matches in order to earn leg points towards becoming named a Distinguished Pistol shooter. Stephen Monroe, 45, of Janesville, WI, was the overall winner in the M9 Pistol EIC Match, with a score of 258-4x. Monroe, new to pistol shoot-ing, is now on his way to earning his Distinguished Badge – earning 4 leg points with his win. The Top 10 percent of finishers also received their intro-ductory leg points. Monroe showed outstanding perseverance during the match, continu-ing to fire while also battling terrible stomach pain. Crumpled over between shots, he was able to find the strength to straighten his back, aim and fire accurately during each sequence. “I would have rather lost than feel like that,” he said, jokingly. “But I somehow managed to finish alright.” Just behind Monroe in second place was 1stLt. Zane Jones, USMCR,

33, of Columbus, OH, with a score of 257-3x. Jacob Tuomi, 19, of Chas-sell, MI, rounded out the top three with a score of 247-2x for third. The Service Pistol Warm-Up Match on July 8 is meant to give competi-tors the opportunity to practice using their own pistols in a major competi-tion. The event was slightly interrupted this year when rain poured down onto the competitors, causing a short delay. Relay 1 watched the black skies move in over the lake but managed to finish their sequences, while Relay 2 was forced to evacuate the range until the storm passed. Once the clouds moved out of the area and all relays fired, it was SFC James Henderson, 47, of Midland, GA, who earned the top spot with his score of 388-11x. Henderson is the current record holder for the event, having fired a 392-15x back in 2009. SSgt. Jonathan Shue, 32, of Stafford, VA, claimed the second place position with a score of 382-16x, while SGT Greg Markowski, 40, of Columbus, GA, trailed closely behind with 381-12x to land in third place. Though all competitors in the Warm-Up Match received a commemora-tive coin, the Top 10 percent of the 277 competitors who fired in the event was given exclusive Gold Coins.

By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer

Members of the Army, Air Force, Marine, Navy and other military shooting teams serve as lead instructors during the course.

Besides fundamentals of pistol use, SAFS students also learn how to score and other key aspects of competition pistol shooting.

After classroom instruction, SAFS students spend time on the range to practice po-sitioning, sight pictures and other fundamental elements.

MATCH WINNER SCORE AWARDSGlenn Zimmerman, Waterville, OH 368-11X High Junior Plaque, Certificate of Achievement

High Junior President’s Pistol Plaque, Glenn Zimmerman, Presenter: Mr. Gary Anderson

CAMP PERRY, OH – SFC James Hender-son, 47, of Midland, GA, was the overall win-ner of the match, firing a 387-28x. Henderson currently holds the record score for the event with a 393-17x, set in 2009. With his win, Hen-derson will receive his name engraved on the President’s Pistol Trophy – on permanent dis-play at Camp Perry.

The President’s Pistol Match was first fired in 1981 and since has become one of the most prestigious events offered during the National Trophy Pistol Matches. The match is so named because winners traditionally received letters of congratulations from the President of the United States, including recent Presidents such as Clinton and Bush. This year, over 480 com-petitors fired in the match on July 13.

GySgt. Jason Hedrick, 38, of Williamsburg, VA, squeaked into second place – winning by only one “x.” His score of 381-13x bested the 381-12x fired by SSgt. Jonathan Shue, 32, of Stafford, VA. Shue earned third place with his score and was also named the High Shooter with a M1911.

Over 480 competitors fired in this year’s President’s Pistol Match – one of the most prestigious events during the National Pistol Matches.

Steve Reiter was the High Senior of the event, firing a score of 370-9x. Presenter: Col Greg Kitchens, USMC

High Woman of the event was Karen Newby, 34, of Fort Benning, GA. Newby fired a 345-6x – six points above the next highest woman of the pack. Steve Re-iter, 72, of Tucson, AZ, claimed the High Senior award with his score of 370-9x and nearly made the list of the Top 10 shooters of the match – coming in 11th place overall.

Both Newby and Reiter made the President’s Hundred ranking – reserved for the 100 highest marksmen in the competition. Newby was one of only two women to make the list, along with SSG Sally Talbott, 37, of Fayetteville, NC, who fired a 339-5x. Competitors who reach the President’s Hundred receive commemorative medallions and certificates. The cut-off score for the President’s 100 was 339-5x.

The Junior President’s Pistol Match follows the same Course of Fire as the adult match but is fired with a .22 caliber smallbore pistol. This year, 22 junior shooters competed in the match.

Glenn Zimmerman, 17, of Waterville, OH, led the junior group with a score of 368-11x – topping the field by 10 points. He was also the top junior marksman in the Overall Junior Pistol Ranking, with his combined scores from the Junior President’s, National Trophy and National Trophy Team Matches – tallying an aggregate score of 909-24x.

Lisa Emmert, 18, of Houghton, MI, earned the second place position with her score of 358-5x, while Alexander Chichkov, 20, of Tampa, FL, landed in third with a score of 357-6x.

CAMP PERRY, OH – The National Trophy Individual (NTI) Pistol Match has been cemented at the National Matches since its second year of existence, in 1904, and is undoubtedly one of the most elite and renowned events offered during the National Match season. Remaining a popular match, over 450 competitors partici-pated in this year’s NTI, fired on July 13. David Lange, 45, of Glen Rock, NJ, was the winner of the General Custer Tro-phy, reserved for the overall competitor in the match, with his score of 283-2x. Fol-lowing close behind was Richard Kang, 47, of Delmar, MD, with 282-10x, as SSG Patrick Franks, 36, of Phenix City, AL, fired a score of 280-10x for third. Steve Reiter, 72, of Tucson, AZ, won the Senior Pistol Trophy with his score of 277-9x. Lange’s wife, Kathy Chatterton, 63, was the recipient of the National Woman’s Trophy, after recording a score of 276-11x. The couple met through a shooting com-petition and has been together since April 1999. Staying at the top of their games, Lange and Chatterton practice together consistency during the week and compete in at least one match each weekend. The pair is also members of separate shooting teams, which can make spending time together throughout the year somewhat challenging. But, in the end, their com-mon passion for shooting keeps them close. “Both of our teams are spread out all over, and sometimes we only see each other a couple times of year. Other times we meet up and go to the Shot Show or to the same match,” he said. “It works for us.”Leading the Junior Individual Pistol Match was Alexander Chichkov, 20, of Tampa, FL, with a score of 268-5x. Chichkov is no stranger to winning at the National Matches, having won the Junior President’s Pistol Match in 2013 and the Junior Individual Pistol Match in 2012. Now aging out of the junior category, his advice to those who will take his place on the winner’s podium is simple: Practice. “Consistency is key,” he said. “Practice whenever you can, and stay consistent in the things that work for you.” Glenn Zimmerman, 17, of Waterville, OH, claimed the second place spot with a score of 265-5x, while Irina Andrianova, 18, of Schaunburg, IL, landed in third with her score of 262-2x. The National Trophy Team (NTT) Match is a four-man team competition, where the winning team takes home the coveted Gold Cup Trophy. Growing since last year’s competition, the NTT hosted 24 teams on July 13. The recipient team of the Gold Cup in this year’s match was the United States Army Marksmanship Unit team Blue, with an aggregate score of 1124-24x. Firing members are SSG Patrick Franks, SGT Greg Markowski, SFC Michael Gasser and SSG Jeffery Lewis. The team is coached by SSG Adam Sokolows-ki. Remaining consistent in their talents, the team has won the NTT for the past 8 years. Following in second was the United States Marine Corps team Scarlet, with a score of 1113-28x, trailed by Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association, which landed in third with a score of 1096-24x. The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association also won the Oglethorpe Trophy, awarded to the High Civilian team. Winning the Riding the High Places Trophy, reserved for the high junior team, was ORPA Gold, with an aggregate score of 535-11x. Juniors fire in two-person teams and use .22 caliber pistols. Members of the winning team are Brett and Bryce Tucker, of North Canton, OH. The pair is coached by Fred Totts.
